"bio": "Gabriela Quirós is the \u003cstrong>supervising producer for KQED's web science video series \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/deeplook\">Deep Look\u003c/a>\u003c/strong>. She joined KQED as a TV producer when its science series QUEST started in 2006 and has covered everything from Alzheimer’s to bee die-offs to dark energy.\r\n\r\nShe won a 2022 AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Award with a team of her Deep Look colleagues. She has won six regional Emmys as a video producer and has shared eight more as the coordinating producer of Deep Look. The episode she produced about \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/science/728086/how-mosquitoes-use-six-needles-to-suck-your-blood\">How Mosquitoes Use Six Needles to Suck Your Blood\u003c/a> won a Webby \"People's Voice\" award. She has also earned awards from the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Society of Environmental Journalists.\r\n\r\nHer videos for KQED have also aired on NOVA scienceNOW and the PBS NewsHour, and appeared on NPR.org.\r\n\r\nAs an independent filmmaker, she produced and directed the hour-long documentary \u003ca href=\"http://lpbp.org/beautiful-sin-qa-with-producer-gabriela-quiros/\">\u003cem>Beautiful Sin\u003c/em>\u003c/a>, about the surprising story of how Costa Rica became the only country in the world to outlaw in vitro fertilization. The film aired in 2015 on public television stations throughout the U.S., and in Costa Rica.\r\n\r\nShe started her journalism career as a newspaper reporter in Costa Rica, where she grew up. She won the National Science Journalism Award there for a series of articles about organic agriculture, and developed a life-long interest in health reporting. She moved to the Bay Area in 1996 to study documentary filmmaking at the University of California, Berkeley, where she received master’s degrees in journalism and Latin American studies.",

I first met Tom after a talk he gave years ago about improving auto fuel economy without sacrificing safety. (Tom recently briefed U.S. Congressional staff preparing to debate legislation on increasing corporate average fuel economy (CAFÉ) standards.) Etched in my mind is a graph he displayed showing the relative safety of most car models. Each model is rated according to how many drivers are killed in accidents involving that model car or light truck-- including those in the car or truck and those in other cars involved in the accident (see Figure).\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan class=\"left\">\u003cimg src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/quest/wp-content/uploads/sites/39/imp/blog_safety_figure.jpg\">\u003c/span>The safest cars are the ones with the most safety features-- passenger cars with names like BMW, Mercedes Benz, and Lexus. The least safe are large SUVs and pick-up trucks-- which, with their high centers of gravity and difficulty in handling tend to rollover in an accident--and less expensive sub-compact cars. Auto safety has evolved from seat belts to air bags to electronic stability control. Each new technology starts as an option and then becomes standard. The current trend in auto safety is to replace dangerous truck-based SUVs with crossover versions based on car platforms. The crossover SUVs are safer, both to their own and other drivers, and have about 20% higher fuel economy for the same interior volume, as conventional truck-based SUVs. Go figure! Other changes in vehicle design can improve the fuel economy and safety of all vehicle types, including the largest pickups.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So why am I writing about cars, when my area of expertise is houses? Let me count the reasons. People live many hours in their cars, which not only use energy for transporting people and things, but also use energy for heating, cooling, and entertaining, just like houses do. Cars sleep in garages that are attached to houses. As electric cars and plug-in hybrids become more popular, the electricity load in homes will increase. And where we live determines the length of our commute to work. Cars and houses go together like peas and carrots!\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Here's a suggestion for all of you out there who are deciding whether to live in an affordable home, condo, or apartment an hour away from your job, or getting in over your head financially to live close to your work. When you are looking at new homes out in Antioch or Brentwood, ask your realtor, \"Does this house come with a Prius?\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan class=\"left\">\u003cimg src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/quest/wp-content/uploads/sites/39/imp/icon_jimg.jpg\">\u003c/span>\u003cem>\u003cstrong>Jim Gunshinan\u003c/strong> is Managing Editor of \u003ca href=\"http://www.homeenergy.org\" target=\"_blank\">Home Energy Magazine\u003c/a>. After 16 months of looking, my wife Michele and I bought a house! We move in at the end of this month. It seems fitting that the family we are buying the house from is moving into a new green home featured in the San Francisco Chronicle (\u003cem>\u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/04/21/HOGAQPAKL51.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">\"When your ship comes in, prefab house could be on it\"\u003c/a>\u003c/em>-- Saturday, April 21, 2007, p. F5). Our green (money) is supporting another family s green home.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But I'm feeling a bit of pressure as someone who writes and edits articles about energy efficient, healthy, sustainable, and affordable home construction and renovation to make my house especially green. Maggie Forti, Home Energy's circulation manager, told me that I have to be greener than Gore. But we both agreed that I could never be greener than Steve. Steve Greenberg is a Home Energy technical editor who just installed a second solar electric system on his house to power his electric car--a car that he rarely uses because he bicycles everywhere.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Our home-to-be is just a little more than 1,000 square feet and is already well insulated; except for the ever-present recessed-can lights in the ceiling that leak air into the attic. New homes in California average about half-a-dozen recessed-can lights in kitchens alone! We can add attic insulation and reflector compact fluorescent replacement lamps to take care of that problem. We've bought an \u003ca href=\"http://www.energystar.gov/\" target=\"_blank\">Energy Star\u003c/a> clothes washer. If we want to be anywhere near as green as Steve, we d have to dry our clothes on a line in the back yard.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The lawn has a \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drip_irrigation\" target=\"_blank\">drip irrigation\u003c/a> system, and that's good. In an earlier blog I wrote that California uses 10% of its total energy resources to move, treat, and heat water. I underestimated. It is actually closer to \u003cstrong>20%\u003c/strong>! And with the lack or normal rainfall this winter and forecasts for the same next year, water will become an even bigger environmental issue. There may be xeriscaping in our future. \u003ca href=\"http://landscaping.about.com/cs/lazylandscaping/g/xeriscape.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Xeriscape landscaping\u003c/a> is suited to hot-dry climates and includes using native, drought-resistant plants that require a minimum of watering.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Owning a home. After 16 months of looking, my wife Michele and I bought a house! We move in at the end of this month. It seems fitting that the family we are buying the house from is moving into a new green home featured in the San Francisco Chronicle (\u003cem>\u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/04/21/HOGAQPAKL51.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">\"When your ship comes in, prefab house could be on it\"\u003c/a>\u003c/em>-- Saturday, April 21, 2007, p. F5). Our green (money) is supporting another family s green home.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But I'm feeling a bit of pressure as someone who writes and edits articles about energy efficient, healthy, sustainable, and affordable home construction and renovation to make my house especially green. Maggie Forti, Home Energy's circulation manager, told me that I have to be greener than Gore. But we both agreed that I could never be greener than Steve. Steve Greenberg is a Home Energy technical editor who just installed a second solar electric system on his house to power his electric car--a car that he rarely uses because he bicycles everywhere.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Our home-to-be is just a little more than 1,000 square feet and is already well insulated; except for the ever-present recessed-can lights in the ceiling that leak air into the attic. New homes in California average about half-a-dozen recessed-can lights in kitchens alone! We can add attic insulation and reflector compact fluorescent replacement lamps to take care of that problem. We've bought an \u003ca href=\"http://www.energystar.gov/\" target=\"_blank\">Energy Star\u003c/a> clothes washer. If we want to be anywhere near as green as Steve, we d have to dry our clothes on a line in the back yard.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The lawn has a \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drip_irrigation\" target=\"_blank\">drip irrigation\u003c/a> system, and that's good. In an earlier blog I wrote that California uses 10% of its total energy resources to move, treat, and heat water. I underestimated. It is actually closer to \u003cstrong>20%\u003c/strong>! And with the lack or normal rainfall this winter and forecasts for the same next year, water will become an even bigger environmental issue. There may be xeriscaping in our future. \u003ca href=\"http://landscaping.about.com/cs/lazylandscaping/g/xeriscape.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Xeriscape landscaping\u003c/a> is suited to hot-dry climates and includes using native, drought-resistant plants that require a minimum of watering.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Owning a home. This is where the rubber hits the road for this environmentalist-- \u003cstrong>any advice from you fellow green homeowners out there in QUEST blog land? \u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",
