The only explanation for our prolonged detention is the 32 years of mutual hostility between America and Iran. The irony is that Sarah, Josh and I oppose U.S. policies towards Iran which perpetuate this hostility. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Sarah, Josh and I have experienced a taste of the Iranian regime’s brutality. We have been held in almost total isolation from the world and everything we love, stripped of our rights and freedom. You may ask us, now that you are free, can you forgive the Iranian government for what it has done to you? Our answer is this: How can we forgive the Iranian government when it continues to imprison so many other innocent people and prisoners of conscience? It is the Iranian people who bear the brunt of this government’s cruelty and disregard for human rights. There are people in Iran who are in prison for years simply for attending a protest, for writing a pro-democracy blog, or for worshiping an unpopular faith. Journalists remain behind bars and innocent people have been executed. Shane Bauer, Josh Fattal and Sarah Shourd said they were hiking in Iraq’s northern border, near Iran in July, 2009 when they were arrested by Iranian authorities. Shourd \u003ca href=\"http://www.kqed.org/news/story/2010/09/14/33636/freed_from_iranian_prison_us_hiker_en_route_to_oman?source=npr&category=world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was released\u003c/a> last September due to health reasons.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The lawyer for the three, Masoud Shafiei, \u003ca href=\"http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=138848046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Associated Press\u003c/a> he received his clients’ verdict on Sunday, noting his clients are innocent and he will appeal.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“I will use entire legal capacity to defend them,” he said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The AP reports that Iran’s chief prosecutor confirmed the sentences and said the three have 20 days to appeal. Shourd’s case will be tried despite her absence, prosecutor Jafari Dowlatabadi said. She was released on $500,000 bail, but has stated she will not return for the trial.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Despite this sentence, Iran’s ambassador to Iraq, Hassan Dannaie Fir, said told the AP he expects the two men to be freed “very soon,” but declined any specific details on their release.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi \u003ca href=\"http://www.voanews.com/english/news/middle-east/iran/Iranian-Envoy-Says-US-Hikers-May-Be-Freed-Soon-126770103.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made similar comments\u003c/a> to the AP earlier this month, saying he hoped “the trial of the two American defendants who were detained for the crime of illegally entering Iran will finally lead to their freedom.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Fir and Salehi have hinted that Bauer and Fattal could recieve an early release because pardons are traditionally issued during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month. The tradition calls for Muslims to show special mercy and kindness. This year, Ramadan is observed from August 1 until August 29.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a statement posted on the \u003ca href=\"http://freethehikers.org/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FreeTheHikers.org\u003c/a> website, the Bauer and Fattal families \u003ca href=\"http://blog.freethehikers.org/6177/statement-from-the-bauer-and-fattal-familiies-after-verdict/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reacted to the verdict\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>“We are encouraged that the Iranian Foreign Minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, has said he hopes the case will proceed in a manner that will result in Shane and Josh’s freedom.
