"bio": "April Dembosky is the health correspondent for KQED News and a regular contributor to NPR. She specializes in covering altered states of mind, from postpartum depression to methamphetamine-induced psychosis to the insanity defense. Her investigative series on insurance companies sidestepping mental health laws won multiple awards, including first place in beat reporting from the national Association of Health Care Journalists. She is the recipient of numerous other prizes and fellowships, including a national Edward R. Murrow award for investigative reporting, a Society of Professional Journalists award for long-form storytelling, and a Carter Center Fellowship for Mental Health Journalism.\r\n\r\nDembosky reported and produced \u003cem>Soundtrack of Silence\u003c/em>, an audio documentary about music and memory that is currently being made into a feature film by Paramount Pictures.\r\n\r\nBefore joining KQED in 2013, Dembosky covered technology and Silicon Valley for \u003cem>The Financial Times of London,\u003c/em> and contributed business and arts stories to \u003cem>Marketplace \u003c/em>and \u003cem>The New York Times.\u003c/em> She got her undergraduate degree in philosophy from Smith College and her master's in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley. "content": "\u003cp>Northern California's Humboldt County is known for its towering redwoods. But the region, about 200 miles north of San Francisco, has another claim to fame. Humboldt is to weed what Napa is to fine wine — it's the heart of marijuana production in the United States.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Every fall, young people, mostly in their 20s, come from all over the world to work the marijuana harvest. They come seeking jobs as \"trimmers\" — workers who manicure the buds to get them ready for market. The locals have a name for these young migrant workers: \"trimmigrants.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There are more than 100,000 marijuana plants growing in the hills around Humboldt, the county sheriff's office estimates. They all need to be harvested around the same time and processed quickly to avoid mold and other problems. So, from September through November, it's all hands on deck. Marijuana grows like a huge bush, and the flower it produces is the marijuana bud. Like all the trimmers I spoke with, Fermin would use only his first name. Trimming for an illegal operation could make him an accessory to a drug crime.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"I heard you could get work pretty easy,\" Fermin says. \"The reality is it's taking a little bit longer than I expected.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Fermin has been here for about a month and hasn't found any work yet. It's getting colder and the rains are coming. He sleeps in the woods just outside town and dumpster-dives for food. Until he finds a job trimming weed, he gets by on selling his art and playing music on the street.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>'We Cannot House These People'\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Trimmers are paid by the pound, and fast trimmers can make $300-$500 a day, in cash and under the table — but of course if the place where you're trimming gets busted, it could also land you in jail.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Some trimmigrants, like Fermin, give the impression they're here to work. But the scene is also attracting drifters who hang around looking pretty drugged out. Locals say European youths often get hired over Americans, who are stereotyped as hippie kids.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Kristin Nevedal says migrant trimmers are everywhere, obstructing local businesses and damaging the river with their squatter camps. Nevedal is a local resident and co-founder of the Emerald Growers Association, a group of 400 marijuana farmers all over California.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"This is not the fun vacation thing to do, right? To like, show up in Garberville in the fall and see if you can get a job,\" Nevedal says. \"We cannot house these people. Like, don't come unless you have a job.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>According to the county sheriffs, the majority of growers in Humboldt are operating illegally. So hiring strangers from the side of the road, they say, \u003ca href=\"http://kymkemp.com/2012/sep/19/sheriff-dept-tells-growers-know-your-trimmers/\" target=\"_blank\">puts the growers at risk\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There is risk for trimmers, too. Every year, some go missing, and trimmers have even been killed. They often work in remote areas with no cellphone service or running water, sleeping in tents. Sometimes they don't even know where they are.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Tim Blake has been growing marijuana since the '70s. His collective, Healing Harvest Farms, is just south, in Mendocino County. Blake's is a small farm, and it's legal. He grows 25 plants — the county limit for medicinal marijuana — but the plants are huge.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Look at the different colors,\" Blake says, showing off his plants. \"You got the purples, then you got the dark greens, the light greens.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Blake's marijuana plants look almost like small trees. They're 10 feet high and he says each one will produce about 8 pounds of weed.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"As soon as you squeeze it, you can feel the resin on it,\" says Blake, handling a plant. \"It gets right on your fingers. It's like, all over it.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Good Pay — At Least For Now\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Blake brings me to the trimming room where six people, most in their 20s, are sitting and snipping away. Out of concern that a stranger could steal his entire harvest, which is worth almost a quarter-million dollars, Blake hires only trimmers he knows.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"You're sitting here all day long,\" says a trimmer named Bishma, a local who does catering work that mostly supports his wife and two kids. But during the fall harvest, he lives on the farm full time.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Some people think I sit eight hours at a job,\" says Bishma, \"[but] it's like we're sitting here 14 hours. And it's the same repetitive motion over and over and over again, so people just go to town and just, like, listen to every kind of music they can.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Music is a big part of trimming, and the faster the music, the faster the trimmers snip. I watch as their scissors sync with the beat.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Lots of locals depend on marijuana for part of their livelihood. But the region, about 200 miles north of San Francisco, has another claim to fame. Humboldt is to weed what Napa is to fine wine — it's the heart of marijuana production in the United States.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Every fall, young people, mostly in their 20s, come from all over the world to work the marijuana harvest. They come seeking jobs as \"trimmers\" — workers who manicure the buds to get them ready for market. The locals have a name for these young migrant workers: \"trimmigrants.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There are more than 100,000 marijuana plants growing in the hills around Humboldt, the county sheriff's office estimates. They all need to be harvested around the same time and processed quickly to avoid mold and other problems. So, from September through November, it's all hands on deck. "content": "\u003cp>In the produce aisle of Eureka Natural Foods, every mushroom, zucchini and head of cabbage is organic.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Organic, organic, organic,” says Bill Schaser, a retired teacher and loyal customer.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He says local stores like this, and the local farmers that supply them, want to protect their organic brand. And they want to take advantage of new marketing opportunities that come with being GMO-free. That’s why they’re backing \u003ca href=\"http://ballotpedia.org/Humboldt_County_%22Genetic_Contamination_Prevention_Ordinance%22_GMO_Ban_Initiative,_Measure_P_(November_2014)\" target=\"_blank\">Measure P,\u003c/a> a local measure that would prohibit growing genetically modified crops in Humboldt County.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[soundcloud url=\"https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/175142214\" params=\"color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" iframe=\"true\" /]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“This is a growing economy. And we think we should go with it and get behind that movement as much as possible,” says Schaser, spokesman for the Yes on Measure P campaign.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Two years ago, statewide \u003ca href=\"http://www.kqed.org/a/forum/R201209271000\" target=\"_blank\">Proposition 37\u003c/a> would have required labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms – but it failed by a slim margin. That measure had wide support in Humboldt County, though, and on Nov. 4 residents will vote on whether to ban the production of GMO crops in their region.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A scientific debate over the \u003ca href=\"http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-truth-about-genetically-modified-food/\" target=\"_blank\">safety of GMOs\u003c/a> hasn’t really come up here. Disputes have centered on farmers’ rights. Organic farmers are concerned about cross-pollination from neighboring farms that grow genetically modified crops. They want to prevent contamination.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“If someone within 2 miles of me plants a GMO variety of apples, the way the bees fly, it’s beyond my control. It’d get GMO pollen in my apple flowers,” says Clif Clendenen, owner of Clendenen's Cider Works, an organic apple farm in Fortuna.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Secondarily, many of my customers don’t want GMOs in their food,” he adds. “So there’s a marketing reason.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cfigure id=\"attachment_10346339\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width: 400px\">\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2014/11/yesonp.jpg\">\u003cimg class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-10346339\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2014/11/yesonp-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"Yes on P posters hang outside stores and homes throughout Humboldt County. Supporters of Measure P say adding Humboldt could create an economic corridor that can be used to market products from the region to the Bay Area and other parts of California.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We’re looking from an economic perspective, we can compete with the inland valley,” says Schaser.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Yes on P campaign raised just $40,000, enough to make a radio ad and a bunch of posters. Schaser says they were expecting to get crushed by a No campaign sponsored by GMO seed companies like Monsanto and Syngenta. But those corporations ignored Measure P and instead invested in blocking statewide GMO labeling propositions in Colorado and Oregon.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But even though there’s no official campaign against Measure P, there are still farmers that plan to vote no, even organic farmers.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“It’s a tool they’re taking out of our toolbox that we can’t use anymore,” says John Vovoda, a dairy farmer in Ferndale.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>His farm is organic now -- he ships 6,000 gallons of organic milk every day that shows up on store shelves throughout California. But his operation used to be conventional. He used to grow acres of GMO corn to feed his cows.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“The point is, if my children want to go back to conventional, now they won’t be able to do it,” he says, nodding toward his son, Robert, who lives and works with him on the dairy farm.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“When you’re a small family farm, you want to spend more of your time with your animals,” says Robert, as a herd of cows grazes in the pasture behind him. “Now we spend more of our time making sure we’re in the office, doing paperwork to make sure we’re in compliance with all the regulations. Measure P is just another regulation.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The senior Vovoda says, when it comes down to it, it’s just not right telling farmers what they can and can’t plant.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“I don’t want to stand here and look at my neighbors that are conventional and say, ‘Hey, it’s illegal, and I’m going to turn you in for what you’re doing,' ” Vovoda says.\u003c/p>\n\n",

That measure had wide support in Humboldt County, though, and on Nov. 4 residents will vote on whether to ban the production of GMO crops in their region.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A scientific debate over the \u003ca href=\"http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-truth-about-genetically-modified-food/\" target=\"_blank\">safety of GMOs\u003c/a> hasn’t really come up here. Disputes have centered on farmers’ rights. Organic farmers are concerned about cross-pollination from neighboring farms that grow genetically modified crops. They want to prevent contamination.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“If someone within 2 miles of me plants a GMO variety of apples, the way the bees fly, it’s beyond my control. It’d get GMO pollen in my apple flowers,” says Clif Clendenen, owner of Clendenen's Cider Works, an organic apple farm in Fortuna.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Secondarily, many of my customers don’t want GMOs in their food,” he adds. “So there’s a marketing reason.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cfigure id=\"attachment_10346339\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width: 400px\">\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2014/11/yesonp.jpg\">\u003cimg class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-10346339\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2014/11/yesonp-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"Yes on P posters hang outside stores and homes throughout Humboldt County. Supporters of Measure P say adding Humboldt could create an economic corridor that can be used to market products from the region to the Bay Area and other parts of California.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We’re looking from an economic perspective, we can compete with the inland valley,” says Schaser.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Yes on P campaign raised just $40,000, enough to make a radio ad and a bunch of posters. Schaser says they were expecting to get crushed by a No campaign sponsored by GMO seed companies like Monsanto and Syngenta. But those corporations ignored Measure P and instead invested in blocking statewide GMO labeling propositions in Colorado and Oregon.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But even though there’s no official campaign against Measure P, there are still farmers that plan to vote no, even organic farmers.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“It’s a tool they’re taking out of our toolbox that we can’t use anymore,” says John Vovoda, a dairy farmer in Ferndale.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>His farm is organic now -- he ships 6,000 gallons of organic milk every day that shows up on store shelves throughout California. But his operation used to be conventional. He used to grow acres of GMO corn to feed his cows.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“The point is, if my children want to go back to conventional, now they won’t be able to do it,” he says, nodding toward his son, Robert, who lives and works with him on the dairy farm.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“When you’re a small family farm, you want to spend more of your time with your animals,” says Robert, as a herd of cows grazes in the pasture behind him. “Now we spend more of our time making sure we’re in the office, doing paperwork to make sure we’re in compliance with all the regulations. Measure P is just another regulation.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The senior Vovoda says, when it comes down to it, it’s just not right telling farmers what they can and can’t plant.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“I don’t want to stand here and look at my neighbors that are conventional and say, ‘Hey, it’s illegal, and I’m going to turn you in for what you’re doing,' ” Vovoda says.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003c/div>\u003c/p>",

The California Office of Emergency Services reported, via Twitter, that as of 11:30 p.m. it had no reports of trouble from the coast.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said there is \u003ca href=\"http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/events/PAAQ/2014/03/10/n27g2e/1/WEAK53/WEAK53.txt\" target=\"_blank\">no danger of a tsunami\u003c/a> from the quake.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The quake was centered about 40 miles west of Eureka, the largest town in Humboldt County, and was about 7.5 miles under the seafloor. \u003ca href=\"http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/\" target=\"_blank\">The initial quake was followed by 10 aftershocks\u003c/a> by midnight Sunday, the largest a magnitude-4.6 shake recorded at 10:51 p.m. The \u003ca href=\"http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/dyfi/events/nc/72182046/us/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">USGS \"Did You Feel It?\" public report page\u003c/a> included a smattering of reports from as far away as the Bay Area, the northern Sierra Nevada and the Willamette Valley in Oregon.
