"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

Those notices coincided with a rash of civil rights lawsuits in the Richmond District in late November that led some businesses to close. That followed similar suits in the Mission District in the fall. Letters commonly precede such legal action.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Among those contacted was Bill Hoover, who has owned Gallery of Jewels on 24th Street for 21 years. \u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>The SF Weekly also covered this issue in \u003ca href=\"http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2010/08/disabled_man_suing_chile_lindo.php\">August\u003c/a> and as far back as 2007, when it ran a critical \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfweekly.com/2007-07-25/news/wheelchairs-of-fortune/\">profile\u003c/a> of San Francisco ADA lawyer \u003ca href=\"http://www.disabilitieslaw.com/\">Tom Frankovich\u003c/a>. The Chronicle ran an article in 2002 about another prolific ADA lawyer, \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2002/04/21/BU229408.DTL\">Ted Omholt\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>We've got a call out now to Frankovich in hopes of hearing what he thinks about the characterization of some ADA suits as \"frivolous.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>Update 4:40 p.m.\u003c/em> Well I guess we can let Frankovich speak for himself. Ronn Owens interviewed him on KGO yesterday. The Richmond District Blog of San Francisco has embedded the segment in a \u003ca href=\"http://richmondsfblog.com/2011/01/14/kgo-interviews-ada-litigant-pot-de-pho-is-latest-casualty-among-dozens-being-sued-where-is-eric-mar/\">post\u003c/a> about all the neighborhood businesses that have been hit with ADA lawsuits.\u003c/p>\n\n",

"content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The initiative comes on the heels of a \u003ca href=\"http://articles.sfgate.com/2011-01-06/business/27012966_1_disability-access-disabled-customers-small-business\">Chronicle article\u003c/a> last weekend describing a spate of letters notifying businesses in Noe Valley and the Mission of their non-compliance with disability access laws.\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Since November, several Noe Valley shop owners have received letters from people with disabilities suggesting that their stores may be violating state laws or federal access standards under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Those notices coincided with a rash of civil rights lawsuits in the Richmond District in late November that led some businesses to close. That followed similar suits in the Mission District in the fall. Letters commonly precede such legal action.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Among those contacted was Bill Hoover, who has owned Gallery of Jewels on 24th Street for 21 years. \u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>The SF Weekly also covered this issue in \u003ca href=\"http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2010/08/disabled_man_suing_chile_lindo.php\">August\u003c/a> and as far back as 2007, when it ran a critical \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfweekly.com/2007-07-25/news/wheelchairs-of-fortune/\">profile\u003c/a> of San Francisco ADA lawyer \u003ca href=\"http://www.disabilitieslaw.com/\">Tom Frankovich\u003c/a>. The Chronicle ran an article in 2002 about another prolific ADA lawyer, \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2002/04/21/BU229408.DTL\">Ted Omholt\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>We've got a call out now to Frankovich in hopes of hearing what he thinks about the characterization of some ADA suits as \"frivolous.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>Update 4:40 p.m.\u003c/em> Well I guess we can let Frankovich speak for himself. Ronn Owens interviewed him on KGO yesterday.
