Meanwhile, details of the police investigation leading up to the arrests emerged. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>From the \u003ca href=\"http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/07/suspects-in-dodger-stadium-beating-bragged-to-coworkers-police-say.html\">LA Times\u003c/a> this morning: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>The two new suspects accused in the Dodger Stadium beating of Bryan Stow bragged to coworkers after the attack, police sources said. Police said they were able to identify the men from Rialto — Louie Sanchez, 29, and Marvin Norwood, 30 — based in part on their unruly behavior at the March 31 game and after they bragged to coworkers about their fights. The men were charged with assault and mayhem Friday afternoon and were being held on $500,000 bail. They are scheduled for arraignment Monday morning.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The police sources said they have cellphones and photos that place the men at the game. In addition, the men were implicated by Dorene Sanchez, Norwood’s wife or long-term partner, and Louie Sanchez’s sister, the sources said. Dorene Sanchez was arrested as an accessory to the crime, but has not been charged. Stow was attacked outside the venue after the game. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The complaint against Norwood and Sanchez also included some grisly details about the attack. From \u003ca href=\"http://news.yahoo.com/complaint-reveals-gruesome-details-fan-beating-073811546.html\">AP\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>The complaint alleged both men personally inflicted great bodily injury on Stow, “causing him to become comatose due to brain injury and to suffer paralysis.” \u003cdel datetime=\"2011-07-25T18:35:53+00:00\">The mayhem count alleged that they “did cut and disable the tongue, and put out an eye and slit (Stow’s) nose, ear and lip.”\u003c/del>\u003cem> Update 11:37 a.m.:\u003c/em> Our LA Bureau Chief, Krissy Clark, says this language is actually part of the “mayhem” statute, and not reflective of actual injuries to Stow.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Here’s \u003ca href=\"http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/video?id=8266742\">video\u003c/a> of Friday’s LAPD press conference on the case, at which LA Police Chief Charlie Beck announced that Giovanni Ramirez, the original suspect who police had \u003ca href=\"http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/local/los_angeles&id=8154332\">insisted\u003c/a> was involved in the attack, was no longer under suspicion. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“In policing it is just as important to exonerate the innocent as it is to implicate the guilty,” Beck opened his remarks. “This is not just a phrase, these are words that define the character of the Los Angeles Police Department. Today we are here to announce the arrest of three suspects in the brutal beating of Bryan Stow. But just as importantly, I want to tell the world that Giovanni Ramirez is no longer a suspect in this case. If you're going to do a weekly series, scripted or unscripted, ultimately the audience will decide if they want to come back every week based on how compelling the characters and storylines are. With the Giants, you have a fascinating and colorful collection of characters. This is not the best team money can buy, not the team with each player in the clubhouse representing their own brand, as is the case with some east coast teams that will remain nameless. We were really looking for a combination of characters that the audience would find entertaining, and a group that would give us the kind of access that we need to tell stories that would be honest and candid and fresh. \u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">Brian Wilson sets a tenor for the clubhouse in a certain way. He is beyond unguarded.\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>So the decision to go after the Giants and center around them was made before they had that trophy on the mantle. We started having that discussion last fall and it was clear they were going to be a factor in the postseason. But they hadn't yet won the championship when I started having a dialogue with Larry Baer. It went on for a series of months. There was a lot of buy-in to make this work, as you can imagine, great sensitivities from Major League Baseball, the Players Association, Brian Sabean, Larry Baer and Bill Neukom from a front-office perspective. Certainly Bruce Bochy and his players. That ultimately was the deciding factor. They had to be comfortable, they had to understand our agenda and be willing to trust us, that we wouldn’t violate the sanctity of the clubhouse, we wouldn't cross that line. It took a number of months, and there were some rocky patches along the way until we all decided to dip our toes and take a shot. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>How do you pull out interesting stuff from baseball players, who are often masters of the cliché and guard their privacy?\u003c/strong> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>When you start with a team that has Brian Wilson as a closer, there's a reasonably good chance that you're going to transcend the cliché. Brian Wilson sets a tenor for the clubhouse in a certain way. He is beyond unguarded. He is always searching for the new and the different, not to say that he does it just to tittilate, that's just who he is. He has an enormous amount of fun in his dealing with the media. I was at the ESPYs and there he was in all his glory; I can't even describe the outfit. I'm guessing they didn’t put him up to it, I'm guessing he suggested 'what if I wear this and do this and say this?' \u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">The bullpen is often a treasure trove of content.\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>The bullpen is often a treasure trove of content. I've been making baseball-related films for almost three decades. I was the writer/producer for the Phillies World Series championship film in 1980, I've been doing it for awhile. The bullpen guys are hanging out with not much to do for most of the game, and there' s a lot of free time, a lot of idleness. We once had a cookout in the bullpen on a Phillies farm team; they had a marshmallow roast in the bullpen while the game was going on. So it was natural for us to gravitate to the bullpen not just because of the presence of Brian Wilson, but because of guys like Romo, Affeldt, and Lopez, who have proven to be a great source of material and have helped us go beyond the cliché. And the stakes are high. I don't want to overstate what we're doing. But we are moving the needle a little bit in that we're shooting during the regular season, as they try to defend their World Series title and win another pennant. So to go back to the premise of interesting characters and storylines, you've got that built in. It's more documentary than reality series. One of the stumbling blocks early on, when you say reality show, people understandably run for cover, saying what is the agenda? So what we had to do is make people realize that we are baseball guys who understand the sanctity of the clubhouse and the magnitude of what's going on and the opportunity we've been given. And we're documentary filmmakers, that's my background in the business. Fly on the wall, cinema verite, stand back and let it unfold. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>One of the most dramatic moments in the season so far is the injury to Buster Posey. Devastating to him and to the Giants, but to you its luck in a sense, because it's a great story. How did you navigate that with the team? \u003c/strong> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Tricky. The Buster Posey incident presents as you said a great opportunity for storytelling, but at same time it's catastrophic for the team. And when you get involved in a project like this you kind of become part of the team. You're pulling for these guys; you have to stay non-partisan in your storytelling and filmmaking, but you can't help but be drawn to these guys, such a lovable cast of characters. So the first response is that it's horrific and hard to watch, you feel for Buster, the team, and Bochy. In fact when we were discussing how to handle our treatment t of the injury, we recalled that in the 1980 playoffs Pete Rose came barreling into Bochy, the catcher for the Astros. But you have to quickly put aside your hurts feelings and jump into action and navigate those choppy waters and try to get as broad a cross-section as possible. This became a great source of controversy. For about a week or two in baseball this was topic No 1, discussing the injury and the notion that perhaps there should be a change in the rules, should runners be allowed to barrel into catchers full-force. Bruce Bochy had a lot to say about it, Brian Sabean had a lot to say about it, so did a lot of players. Was Scott Cousins a villain or was he just doing his job? Ultimately both Sabean and Bochy had very strong comments and it was our job to include them but also to include their response to others comments and to their own. When the dust settled, there's Buster Posey coming back to the clubhouse for rehab, wheeling around on this strange contraption, which is really difficult to watch, the fallen hero. And Buster was great about granting us time and giving us his reflections. "content": "\u003cp>In a \u003ca href=\"http://science.kqed.org/quest/audio/gulls-threaten-south-bay-salt-pond-restoration-work/\"> QUEST radio story\u003c/a> on Monday, I cover the Bay Area's California gull population becoming a major concern for the \u003ca href=\"http://www.southbayrestoration.org/\">South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project\u003c/a>. Thousands of acres of industrial salt ponds are being restored for shorebirds and other wildlife. And that restoration work is creating a big opportunity for some very aggressive gulls.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>While reporting the story, I stumbled upon a mystery that's well-known to San Francisco Giants fans: Some gulls have an uncanny way of showing up at AT&T Park during the eighth or ninth inning of a ballgame.\u003c/p>\n\u003cfigure id=\"attachment_34166\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 300px\">\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2011/07/GullATTPark1.jpg\">\u003cimg class=\"size-medium wp-image-34166\" title=\"GullATTPark\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2011/07/GullATTPark1-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\">\u003c/a>\u003cfigcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Malingering/Flickr\u003c/figcaption>\u003c/figure>\n\u003cp>Day game or night game, the gulls bizarrely seem to know when the game is close to ending, pouncing on leftover hot dogs and garlic fries. As Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow said, “if you were a gull, where would you be?”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There are a lot of popular theories about how the gulls time their arrival so well. Do they recognize the illustrious beard of Giants closer Brian Wilson? Do they know “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” a tune that's always sung during the seventh inning stretch?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I spoke to a few local experts to get their take...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Dan Murphy, Volunteer with Golden Gate Audubon\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>It's a crime of opportunity. They're very well attuned to our behavior and our trash. When there are large numbers of people in the stands, gulls don't come into the ballpark. But they can sense when things are starting to wind down. A lot of people leave the game before it's over, so they might be clued in by people moving out of the upper deck toward the eighth inning. That makes sense since they seem to settle on the left field side first.\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">They seem to have a sense of how long games normally go.\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>If a game goes into extra innings, the gulls still seem to know when the ninth inning is. You'll see them sitting on the roof or on the big glove in the outfield, waiting for the game to end. That may still be due to the fans that leave early, but they seem to have a sense of how long games normally go. It's likely that a few birds are always watching and as soon as a few birds go in, others will follow. They're really good at what they do. They find food sources and use them to the max.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp> \u003c!--more-->\u003cbr>\n\u003cstrong>\u003cbr>\nDavid Shuford, Biologist with PRBO Conservation Science:\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Gulls spend their day cruising around a lot. But once they figure something out, they tend to come back. So even though the ninth inning doesn't happen at the same time each day, once a few gulls pick up on it, you'll soon have a crowd. It's possible that they can recognize the sounds, too, like songs that are played during the game. Gulls are pretty good about sound.\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">It's possible that they can recognize the sounds, too, like songs that are played during the game\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>In general, they're really good at figuring things out. Like when local dumps are closed on the weekends, the gulls seem to know that and don't show up on those days. It's hard to know if they truly know what Saturday is. They may just be cruising by and not see any action, so they don't land. But they seem to recognize the pattern.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Gulls have an advantage - they're total generalists. They're smart and they're tough. They can eat just about anything too. They go after fish, garbage, and other birds. Some of our work on the Farallon Islands has shown that gulls can actually recognize certain individual people as well.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Josh Ackerman, Research Wildlife Biologist with USGS:\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>They do exactly that same thing at the landfills in the Bay Area. We've done studies on gulls where we've tagged them with transmitters and tracked them daily for two years. California gulls depend on a few of the landfills in the South Bay for food. They arrive exactly when the dumps open and leave right when they close, since the trash piles are covered up when the landfill isn't operating. From our studies, we know that the gulls cover a lot of territory during the day, so it's not a big deal for them to travel to find food.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>George Costa, Senior Vice President of Ballpark Operations at AT&T Park:\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>We've seen an uptick. There seem to be more gulls lately. They always time their arrival to an inning or two innings before the game ends. They're creatures of habit. They know where the food is and that crowds mean food. They're never here except for game days, but if there's a game, they crash the party every night.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It's a series of triggers that tells them it's time. They see the lights and the crowds. There are food smells, like the garlic fries. It's a combination of all those things. You'll see the gulls line up on the left field roof before the game ends. We see the scouts come in and they cue the rest of the gulls.\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">We're looking at a variety of possibilities to deal with it, including having a falcon on site.\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>It's a nuisance really and the fans don't enjoy it. So we're looking at a variety of possibilities to deal with it, including having a falcon on site. They've used them at other ballparks and they seem to work there. You won't get rid of the gulls completely, but we think it would get rid of about 80 percent. As Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow said, “if you were a gull, where would you be?”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There are a lot of popular theories about how the gulls time their arrival so well. Do they recognize the illustrious beard of Giants closer Brian Wilson? Do they know “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” a tune that's always sung during the seventh inning stretch?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

They're very well attuned to our behavior and our trash. When there are large numbers of people in the stands, gulls don't come into the ballpark. But they can sense when things are starting to wind down. A lot of people leave the game before it's over, so they might be clued in by people moving out of the upper deck toward the eighth inning. That makes sense since they seem to settle on the left field side first.\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">They seem to have a sense of how long games normally go.\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>If a game goes into extra innings, the gulls still seem to know when the ninth inning is. You'll see them sitting on the roof or on the big glove in the outfield, waiting for the game to end. That may still be due to the fans that leave early, but they seem to have a sense of how long games normally go. It's likely that a few birds are always watching and as soon as a few birds go in, others will follow. They're really good at what they do. They find food sources and use them to the max.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp> \u003c!--more-->\u003cbr>\n\u003cstrong>\u003cbr>\nDavid Shuford, Biologist with PRBO Conservation Science:\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Gulls spend their day cruising around a lot. But once they figure something out, they tend to come back. So even though the ninth inning doesn't happen at the same time each day, once a few gulls pick up on it, you'll soon have a crowd. It's possible that they can recognize the sounds, too, like songs that are played during the game. Gulls are pretty good about sound.\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">It's possible that they can recognize the sounds, too, like songs that are played during the game\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>In general, they're really good at figuring things out. Like when local dumps are closed on the weekends, the gulls seem to know that and don't show up on those days. It's hard to know if they truly know what Saturday is. They may just be cruising by and not see any action, so they don't land. But they seem to recognize the pattern.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Gulls have an advantage - they're total generalists. They're smart and they're tough. They can eat just about anything too. They go after fish, garbage, and other birds. Some of our work on the Farallon Islands has shown that gulls can actually recognize certain individual people as well.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Josh Ackerman, Research Wildlife Biologist with USGS:\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>They do exactly that same thing at the landfills in the Bay Area. We've done studies on gulls where we've tagged them with transmitters and tracked them daily for two years. California gulls depend on a few of the landfills in the South Bay for food. They arrive exactly when the dumps open and leave right when they close, since the trash piles are covered up when the landfill isn't operating. From our studies, we know that the gulls cover a lot of territory during the day, so it's not a big deal for them to travel to find food.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>George Costa, Senior Vice President of Ballpark Operations at AT&T Park:\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>We've seen an uptick. There seem to be more gulls lately. They always time their arrival to an inning or two innings before the game ends. They're creatures of habit. They know where the food is and that crowds mean food. They're never here except for game days, but if there's a game, they crash the party every night.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It's a series of triggers that tells them it's time. They see the lights and the crowds. There are food smells, like the garlic fries. It's a combination of all those things. You'll see the gulls line up on the left field roof before the game ends. We see the scouts come in and they cue the rest of the gulls.\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">We're looking at a variety of possibilities to deal with it, including having a falcon on site.\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>It's a nuisance really and the fans don't enjoy it. So we're looking at a variety of possibilities to deal with it, including having a falcon on site. They've used them at other ballparks and they seem to work there. You won't get rid of the gulls completely, but we think it would get rid of about 80 percent.
