And he just wouldn't bite when asked, repeatedly, to divulge details of the reported conflict with the partners. The first question from the media: Were you forced out? His answer: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>I don't think that's the right characterization...I came to the conclusion this was the right time to turn the reigns over. It's just an evolutionary process. I didn't have any fixed term in mind when I pushed other things aside..It seems to me it's come pretty much full cycle. Instead, the Executive Committee members were infuriated when they sometimes learned of Neukom's decisions through news reports.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp> \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Baer, for his part, said it would be business-as-usual in terms of the team's operations. The upshot is in the first paragraph: \"(H)e is showing significant improvement and his neurological exams are much better.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>“There have been lots of ups and downs for Bryan, which is not uncommon for patients with severe brain injury,” said Dr. Geoff Manley, Chief of Neurosurgery, who is leading Mr. Stow’s care team. “We are pleased to announce that he is showing significant improvement and his neurological exams are much better. His ability to follow commands and interact with family has increased greatly.” \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Though Mr. Stow remains in serious condition, there have been several recent developments in his case that are illustrative of the complicated course of recovery for traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. SFGH, the only trauma center in the city, specializes in care for brain and spinal cord injured patients. The complexities of TBI patient care often exceed the expertise of hospitals that do not specialize in this area of injury. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Mr. Stow arrived at SFGH from LAC+USC Medical Center on Monday May 16, after being severely injured in an assault on March 31 in Los Angeles, where he suffered traumatic brain injury. He underwent a decompressive craniectomy in Los Angeles, a life-saving surgical procedure to remove a piece of the skull to relieve pressure caused by brain swelling resulting from the beating. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Dr. Manley replaced the missing skull fragment on Wednesday, August 10 with a custom prosthetic bone flap. After several days of close observation and oversight, Mr. Stow appears to be tolerating the procedure well. This is the second attempt to replace the bone. In mid-July, Dr. Manley replaced the skull fragment for the first time, but in that instance fluid quickly collected and was trapped underneath the fragment, resulting in a rapid decline in his neurological status. Within an hour, Mr. Stow was rushed to the operating room to remove the bone piece. That set-back required several weeks of constant supervision and regular intervention to drain excess fluid, to prevent Mr. Stow from suffering further harm. We will continue to monitor him closely and will determine over the next week whether he will require a shunt to permanently divert this fluid. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Bryan’s trajectory is his own, but it is not uncommon for TBI patients with this degree of severe brain injury to have significant ups and downs,” Dr. Manley said. “Though he still cannot speak, he is now able to move slightly upon command and to turn his body toward someone talking to him. His anti-seizure medications have been reduced and he is now on a stable regiment to prevent further post-traumatic seizures. The Giants selected Wheeler with the No. 6 pick in the 2009 draft.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Mets manager Terry Collins was told not to play Beltran at Cincinnati on Wednesday night. The switch-hitting right fielder, who can become a free agent after this season, wasn't at Great American Ball Park before batting practice. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It would be the second major trade for the Mets, who dealt closer Francisco Rodriguez to Milwaukee after the All-Star game.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Everyone here has anticipated it, whether we like it or not,\" Collins said. \"We knew it was going to happen. So we'll find out tomorrow.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Mets have discussed Beltran with several teams, and the Giants certainly could use his bat as they make a run at repeating. Beltran leads the National League with 30 doubles and is batting .289 with 15 homers and 66 RBIs.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>San Francisco's offense has been inconsistent and lacking power. The Giants entered Wednesday night's game in Philadelphia batting .241 as a team with only 66 home runs. After concluding the series in Philadelphia on Thursday night, they come to Cincinnati on Friday for three weekend games.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>General manager Brian Sabean recently talked about upgrading the Giants' roster, and it appears he's close to adding a talented slugger in the middle of a comeback year.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"He's a complete player,\" Giants manager Bruce Bochy said, declining to talk about the trade specifically. \"Carlos has all the tools that you look for in a player. He has great instincts for the game. Plays the game hard, plays the game right. I still remember when Houston got him and the job he did there.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"He's a tremendous all-around player. He's one of the elite players of the game.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The 34-year-old Beltran is in the final year of a $119 million deal he signed with the Mets before the 2005 season. He was plagued by knee injuries the past two seasons, but has been healthy this year.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Mets won four of their first 15 games and haven't been higher than third in the NL East after that poor start, prompting them to look into trades.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Star shortstop Jose Reyes, who also can become a free agent after this season, said Beltran took teammates to a local steakhouse owned by one of his friends following an 8-6 win over the Reds on Tuesday night.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We were joking with him: 'You're doing this because you're going to get traded,'\" Reyes said. \"He said, 'No. no.'\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Reyes said losing Beltran will be a huge blow to the Mets, who were 52-51 heading into Wednesday night.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"You lose a guy like that in July, it's big, it's huge,\" Reyes said. \"We've got to continue to play with what we've got. It's not easy to replace that kind of player. It's going to be tough.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Beltran drove in at least 112 runs for three straight seasons from 2006-08, but many Mets fans will remember him for his at-bat during the ninth inning of Game 7 of the 2006 NL championship series against St. Louis. Beltran came up with the bases loaded and the Mets trailing 3-1, and struck out looking to end the game.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Collins said Lucas Duda would play in right field a lot after Beltran is gone.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"I'm probably more comfortable at first base and left field because I haven't played a lot out there,\" Duda said. \"I'll try my best out there and see what happens.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"He'd better get comfortable real fast,\" Collins said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Pitcher R.A. Dickey has known Beltran since 2000 and will miss having him in the clubhouse.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"He's a very complete individual, not only on the field but off,\" Dickey said. \"He's a valuable piece that's leaving.
