Attorneys for the victims claim Los Angeles and Mexican church leaders also conspired to shield one notorious pedophile priest from authorities.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Eleven of the 17 cases settled by the L.A. Archdiocese involve former Mexican priest Nicolas Aguilar Rivera. He is believed to have molested more than two dozen children in the late 1980s.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Plaintiffs’ attorney Anthony De Marco says the priest fled to his native Mexico shortly after the abuse came to light.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“He’s been on the most wanted list in the state of Puebla for over 20 years,” said De Marco at a news conference Wednesday in Los Angeles.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a statement, the archdiocese said Aguilar Rivera was removed from ministry as soon as a report of alleged abuse was made against him.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But in a videotaped deposition from last year, Cardinal Roger Mahony acknowledges that church officials notified Aguilar Rivera of the allegations before notifying the police.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Another plaintiffs’ attorney, Jeff Anderson, said Aguilar Rivera left L.A. a couple days later.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“What we see in this deposition is Cardinal Mahony still cannot acknowledge that facilitating the flight of a pedophile priest is wrong,” said Anderson.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The L.A. Archdiocese says it sent several letters to Aguilar Rivera’s bishop in Mexico requesting that he be returned to the United States to face criminal charges. Church documents released last year revealed a pattern by former Archbishop Mahony and other church leaders to conceal incidents of clergy sex abuse from authorities.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Mahony was later stripped of all public duties by his successor, Archbishop Jose Gomez.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This week’s settlements also include cases involving a former Catholic high school teacher and two other priests. Esther Miller was one of the girls abused by a priest in the 1980s.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“The money isn’t just to punish the church. We’re about seeking something that will relieve our soul that we’ve been agonized for so many years in,” Miller said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This week’s settlements are among the last active cases of past clergy sex abuse facing the L.A. Diocese. But attorneys warn that it’s possible that more could come forward because of ongoing efforts to revise the state’s statute of limitation.\u003c/p>\n\n",

(AP and KQED News) — A jury acquitted a man Thursday of assaulting a priest he says molested him more than three decades ago during a camping trip and left him with tormented memories that led to alcohol abuse, depression and suicide attempts.\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2012/07/05/william-lynch-after-not-guilty-verdict-i-didnt-think-i-was-going-to-walk-out-of-here-with-the-jury-making-this-decision-full-interview/\">\u003cstrong>Interview with William Lynch after verdict\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>“I’m relieved,” defendant William Lynch said after the trial. “It was unexpected. I didn’t think I was going to walk out of here with the jury making this decision.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The verdict came after defendant Lynch took the witness stand during the two-week trial and acknowledged punching Jerold Lindner several times on May 10, 2010.\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>While previously pleading not guilty, Lynch said he hoped to use the case to publicly shame Lindner and bring further attention to the Catholic Church clergy abuse scandal.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Lynch has said memories of the priest have tormented him for years, and he struggled through nightmares, divorce and other problems. He tried to commit suicide twice.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Prosecutors called Lynch a vigilante and implored the jury not to be swayed by his dramatic testimony describing the horrific ordeal he claims to have endured at the hands of Lindner.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Lynch countered in his testimony that he only wanted the priest to sign a confession and started punching Lindner after the retired priest “leered” at him the same way he looked at Lynch in 1975 during the alleged molestation during a camping trip.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Priest abuse victims and their supporters contributed to Lynch’s defense fund and packed the courtroom every day for a trial. Many carried picket signs outside the courthouse decrying the church abuse scandal.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Lynch refused to discuss a plea bargain with prosecutors, even when he was promised he could avoid prison and would serve no more than a year in exchange for a guilty plea.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Prosecutors said they were left with little choice but to take the case to trial and ask the jury to find Lynch guilty of felony assault and felony elder abuse. Lindner was 65 at the time of the beating.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Santa Clara County prosecutor Vicki Gemetti repeatedly told the jury of nine men and three women that she sympathized with Lynch and even conceded Lynch was molested. But Gemetti insisted that even the most unsavory of victims — drug dealers, wife beaters and child molesters — deserved equal protection under the law.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Lindner also testified and denied abusing Lynch. He later invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and would not testify further for fear of a perjury prosecution. The judge ordered Lindner’s testimony stricken from the record.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a deposition in the late 1990s, Lindner said he didn’t recall Lynch, who received $625,000 in a 1998 confidential settlement with the Jesuits after alleging the abuse.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A jury has acquitted a man charged with assaulting a retired priest he says molested him more than three decades ago in California.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The jury of nine men and three women returned its verdict Thursday against William Lynch after starting deliberations Monday in San Jose.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Prosecutors say Lynch acted as a vigilante when he pummeled Jerold Lindner with his fists in the 2010 attack. They said Lynch’s testimony about his alleged sexual abuse by Lindner was no excuse for beating up the priest years later.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Defense attorneys countered that it was not an act of revenge. (AP and KQED News) — A jury acquitted a man Thursday of assaulting a priest he says molested him more than three decades ago during a camping trip and left him with tormented memories that led to alcohol abuse, depression and suicide attempts.\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2012/07/05/william-lynch-after-not-guilty-verdict-i-didnt-think-i-was-going-to-walk-out-of-here-with-the-jury-making-this-decision-full-interview/\">\u003cstrong>Interview with William Lynch after verdict\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>“I’m relieved,” defendant William Lynch said after the trial. “It was unexpected. I didn’t think I was going to walk out of here with the jury making this decision.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The verdict came after defendant Lynch took the witness stand during the two-week trial and acknowledged punching Jerold Lindner several times on May 10, 2010.\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>While previously pleading not guilty, Lynch said he hoped to use the case to publicly shame Lindner and bring further attention to the Catholic Church clergy abuse scandal.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Lynch has said memories of the priest have tormented him for years, and he struggled through nightmares, divorce and other problems. "content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Prosecutors called Lynch a vigilante and implored the jury not to be swayed by his dramatic testimony describing the horrific ordeal he claims to have endured at the hands of Lindner.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Lynch countered in his testimony that he only wanted the priest to sign a confession and started punching Lindner after the retired priest “leered” at him the same way he looked at Lynch in 1975 during the alleged molestation during a camping trip.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Priest abuse victims and their supporters contributed to Lynch’s defense fund and packed the courtroom every day for a trial. Many carried picket signs outside the courthouse decrying the church abuse scandal.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Lynch refused to discuss a plea bargain with prosecutors, even when he was promised he could avoid prison and would serve no more than a year in exchange for a guilty plea.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Prosecutors said they were left with little choice but to take the case to trial and ask the jury to find Lynch guilty of felony assault and felony elder abuse. Lindner was 65 at the time of the beating.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Santa Clara County prosecutor Vicki Gemetti repeatedly told the jury of nine men and three women that she sympathized with Lynch and even conceded Lynch was molested. But Gemetti insisted that even the most unsavory of victims — drug dealers, wife beaters and child molesters — deserved equal protection under the law.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Lindner also testified and denied abusing Lynch. He later invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and would not testify further for fear of a perjury prosecution. The judge ordered Lindner’s testimony stricken from the record.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a deposition in the late 1990s, Lindner said he didn’t recall Lynch, who received $625,000 in a 1998 confidential settlement with the Jesuits after alleging the abuse.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A jury has acquitted a man charged with assaulting a retired priest he says molested him more than three decades ago in California.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The jury of nine men and three women returned its verdict Thursday against William Lynch after starting deliberations Monday in San Jose.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Prosecutors say Lynch acted as a vigilante when he pummeled Jerold Lindner with his fists in the 2010 attack.
