"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

He also announced that Netflix is spinning off its DVD-by-mail service and naming it “\u003ca href=\"http://www.qwikster.com/\">Qwikster\u003c/a>.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>If you’re looking for the scene where he rolls your subscription rate back to what it was, however — well, maybe that wound up on the cutting room floor. From the printed version of Hastings’ mea culpa, called “\u003ca href=\"http://blog.netflix.com/2011/09/explanation-and-some-reflections.html\">An explanation and some reflections\u003c/a>,” which went up on the Netflix site last night. \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>There are no pricing changes (we’re done with that!). Members who subscribe to both services will have two entries on their credit card statements, one for Qwikster and one for Netflix. This is the key thing I got wrong.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In hindsight, I slid into arrogance based upon past success. We have done very well for a long time by steadily improving our service, without doing much CEO communication. Inside Netflix I say, “Actions speak louder than words,” and we should just keep improving our service.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But now I see that given the huge changes we have been recently making, I should have personally given a full justification to our members of why we are separating DVD and streaming, and charging for both. It wouldn’t have changed the price increase, but it would have been the right thing to do. \u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Jeez, I dunno. Hastings also wrote, “When Netflix is evolving rapidly…I need to be extra-communicative. This is the key thing I got wrong.” I’m not so sure customer dissatisfaction is merely a case of not having provided a PowerPoint presentation along with the bad news. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So far, at least, the price hike has played out like the \u003cem>Heaven’s Gate\u003c/em> of movie-biz decisions. And a special big thanks to all the guys (that’d be Willie, Anthony, Jack, Allen, Daryl, Nathan, Ali, etc.) that worked so quickly to get Judy and I up and running. I know I told you at the all-hands that I was going to be bringing my lunch. That was before I saw the cafeteria–it rocks! I'd been the recipient of all-everyone-in-the-whole-wide-world memos from higher ups for many years, and they all pretty much read like examples from a textbook written by George Orwell. This Bartz missive was something almost unheard of in the annals of corporate communications-speak: a decent read. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So it was no surprise that Bartz went out with this passive-aggressive gem yesterday: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>I am very sad to tell you that I’ve just been fired over the phone by Yahoo’s Chairman of the Board.
