Prior to creating the show, he served as the station's morning news anchor for five-and-half years.\r\n\r\nPrior to joining KQED, Joshua spent six years as an anchor/reporter for WLRN Miami Herald News. He's a native of South Florida, with degrees from the University of Miami. His reporting and newscasting have won awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association and from the National Association of Black Journalists. Joshua is also active in his union, SAG-AFTRA. He lives in San Francisco.",

"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

Gallant is a professor in the Psychology and Neuroscience Programs in Bioengineering, Biophysics and Vision Science at UC Berkeley. He and his \u003ca href=\"http://gallantlab.org/\">lab\u003c/a> caused a stir this week when reports broke that, as the \u003ca href=\"http://www.mercurynews.com/health/ci_18957353?source=rss\">San Jose Mercury News describes\u003c/a>…\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>“(S)cientists…have designed a way to decode, then re-create, human perception — a breakthrough that someday could be used to reproduce dreams, fantasies, memories and the other images from inside our heads…\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The scientists acted as subjects, sitting inside a functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, scanner for hours at a time. While they watched Hollywood movie trailers, the fMRI scanner measured blood flow through their visual cortex, the part of the brain that processes visual information.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This brain activity was fed into a computer program that learned, second by second, to associate visual patterns in the movie with the corresponding brain activity.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Then the images were reconstructed.
