"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

The victim had swelling to his face and a\u003cbr>\nchipped tooth. He told the Officers that throughout the game, a suspect sitting behind him kept insulting him and his team. At one point the suspect slapped him across the head. He slapped his\u003cbr>\nhead again in the second quarter and reached around and slapped his face in the third. When the victim turned around to confront the suspect, he was immediately met with a series of punches to the face. A friend of the suspect’s who was sitting beside him, joined in punching the victim as well. This went on for about 20 seconds until Police arrived. He stated that the officers had taken both suspects into custody but that he had left prior to identifying himself to the Officers as the victim. This incident is still under investigation. The upshot is in the first paragraph: \"(H)e is showing significant improvement and his neurological exams are much better.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>“There have been lots of ups and downs for Bryan, which is not uncommon for patients with severe brain injury,” said Dr. Geoff Manley, Chief of Neurosurgery, who is leading Mr. Stow’s care team. “We are pleased to announce that he is showing significant improvement and his neurological exams are much better. His ability to follow commands and interact with family has increased greatly.” \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Though Mr. Stow remains in serious condition, there have been several recent developments in his case that are illustrative of the complicated course of recovery for traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. SFGH, the only trauma center in the city, specializes in care for brain and spinal cord injured patients. The complexities of TBI patient care often exceed the expertise of hospitals that do not specialize in this area of injury. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Mr. Stow arrived at SFGH from LAC+USC Medical Center on Monday May 16, after being severely injured in an assault on March 31 in Los Angeles, where he suffered traumatic brain injury. He underwent a decompressive craniectomy in Los Angeles, a life-saving surgical procedure to remove a piece of the skull to relieve pressure caused by brain swelling resulting from the beating. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Dr. Manley replaced the missing skull fragment on Wednesday, August 10 with a custom prosthetic bone flap. After several days of close observation and oversight, Mr. Stow appears to be tolerating the procedure well. This is the second attempt to replace the bone. In mid-July, Dr. Manley replaced the skull fragment for the first time, but in that instance fluid quickly collected and was trapped underneath the fragment, resulting in a rapid decline in his neurological status. Within an hour, Mr. Stow was rushed to the operating room to remove the bone piece. That set-back required several weeks of constant supervision and regular intervention to drain excess fluid, to prevent Mr. Stow from suffering further harm. We will continue to monitor him closely and will determine over the next week whether he will require a shunt to permanently divert this fluid. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Bryan’s trajectory is his own, but it is not uncommon for TBI patients with this degree of severe brain injury to have significant ups and downs,” Dr. Manley said. “Though he still cannot speak, he is now able to move slightly upon command and to turn his body toward someone talking to him. "content": "\u003cp>Crews have been working all night at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and are by now deep into the intensive process of converting the home of the Raiders… into the home of the A’s. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Raiders kicked off their preseason last night, and the A’s play this evening, which is creating an unusually tight turnaround.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This morning, KQED producer Molly Samuel spoke with Ron Little, the Interim General Manager for the O.co Coliseum and the Oracle Arena. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“This is probably the tightest we’ve ever had to go,” he said. “We don’t like doing it,” he said. “Anything that gets in the way of progress could cause a delay, and that’s something that would not be good.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Little said it’s only once every couple of years that the crew needs to flip the space from football-ready to baseball-ready (or vice versa) within 24 hours. He said he expects to complete today’s conversion in just 16 hours.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We have to take possession of the field immediately after the game. That’s really important for us,” he said. “Then we immediately get to work.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Between 50 and 100 people have been working since around 10 p.m. last night when the Raiders left the field. "content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003cp>Crews have been working all night at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and are by now deep into the intensive process of converting the home of the Raiders… into the home of the A’s. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Raiders kicked off their preseason last night, and the A’s play this evening, which is creating an unusually tight turnaround.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This morning, KQED producer Molly Samuel spoke with Ron Little, the Interim General Manager for the O.co Coliseum and the Oracle Arena. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“This is probably the tightest we’ve ever had to go,” he said. “We don’t like doing it,” he said. “Anything that gets in the way of progress could cause a delay, and that’s something that would not be good.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Little said it’s only once every couple of years that the crew needs to flip the space from football-ready to baseball-ready (or vice versa) within 24 hours. He said he expects to complete today’s conversion in just 16 hours.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",
