"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. "content": "\u003cp>You may think you're the proverbial \"black sheep\" in your family, but one of your forebears might have an even spottier record... and that record might run through Alcatraz. \u003ca href=\"http://www.ancestry.com\">\u003cstrong>Ancestry.com\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> has finished digitizing records for all 1,575 inmates who were ever incarcerated at the island fortress in San Francisco Bay during its 29 years as a civilian federal prison. Residents of Alcatraz included gangster Al Capone, who was sent there from Leavenworth in Kansas to serve even harder time. The injunction, issued in June, prohibits gang members in a North Oakland neighborhood from hanging out in public, recruiting, or carrying guns or drugs.
