"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. "content": "\u003cp>From \u003ca href=\"http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_17793154\">\u003cstrong>Bay City News\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>A Santa Clara County jury today found that a pair of former De Anza College baseball players are not liable for the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at a house party in 2007.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The jury of six men and six women found that there was no negligence on the part of the defendants, Christopher Knopf and Kenneth Chadwick, and they will not have to pay damages to the victim.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The verdict was read shortly before 9:30 a.m. today following several days of deliberation.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The civil trial came four years after the victim, who is now 21, claimed she was gang-raped by a group of baseball players at a party in unincorporated San Jose on March 3, 2007.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Three young women, identified as Lauren Bryeans, Lauren Chief Elk and April Grolle, pushed their way into the room where the victim was allegedly being assaulted and took her to the hospital.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Afterward, both Chief Elk and Grolle publicly described finding the vomiting semi-conscious girl in a room surrounded by eight men with one allegedly between her legs.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Eight members of the team were suspended due to team policy violations after the incident came to light.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The case was being tried in civil court before Judge Aaron Persky.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Knopf and Chadwick claimed that the sex was consensual. "content": "\u003cp>My thought is that it would be feckless to inveigh against the Dodgers Stadium attack of 42-year-old \u003ca href=\"http://news.google.com/news/search?aq=f&pz=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=en&q=bryan+stow\">Bryan Stow\u003c/a> by a pair of Dodgers fans last week in an incident that appeared to be motivated only by Stow's rooting for the Giants. That such an act of barbarism occurred over something as trivial as a baseball game is almost more imponderable than if it had occurred due to pure and random malice, and would seem to require no further condemnation.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But the incident did take me back to my own brush with fan violence, circa 1985, at Yankee Stadium. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A Mets fan by birth, I'd been running my mouth against the home team all game, until about the 7th inning when the guy in back of me had finally had enough and peppered me with a tirade so wide-ranging in its targeted demographics as to be almost egalitarian in approach. Suffice it to say that race, religion, educational background, sexual orientation, and choice of profession all made an appearance in a barnburner of a speech notable not just for its viciousness, but for the neat oratorical trick of wrapping all these things into one all-encompassing quality, which I have since come to define simply as \"un-Yankeeness.\" Congenital, no doubt.\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In the midst of this violent screed, I managed to peep out something to the effect that \"this is America,\" and that our location within this geopolitical boundary conferred upon me, according to the country's Constitution, the right of free speech, which I believed included the right to publicly proclaim that the New York Yankees suck. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>To which he replied, \"This isn't America, this is \u003cem>Yankee\u003c/em>land.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I'm not making this up.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And so it appears that Bryan Stow, a paramedic by profession, who is now in a coma and is suffering from \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/04/06/BALI1IQNGH.DTL\">brain damage\u003c/a>, who sent a frightened \u003ca href=\"http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/04/giants-fan-sent-text-message-saying-he-was-scared-before-the-beating.html\">text message\u003c/a> about the situation he found himself in minutes before attacked, was caught in royal blue Dodgerland with an orange and black passport. Wearing the wrong colors, wishing the wrong outcome, and most of all, relying on a wrong assumption:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That you \u003cem>can\u003c/em> root for the other guys, that you can even imply in an ironic-yet-cathartic way that the home team sucks without fearing for your life, because, after all, it's only a game.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This sort of tribalism related to sports teams -- what's it all about? "content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003cp>My thought is that it would be feckless to inveigh against the Dodgers Stadium attack of 42-year-old \u003ca href=\"http://news.google.com/news/search?aq=f&pz=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=en&q=bryan+stow\">Bryan Stow\u003c/a> by a pair of Dodgers fans last week in an incident that appeared to be motivated only by Stow's rooting for the Giants. That such an act of barbarism occurred over something as trivial as a baseball game is almost more imponderable than if it had occurred due to pure and random malice, and would seem to require no further condemnation.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But the incident did take me back to my own brush with fan violence, circa 1985, at Yankee Stadium. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A Mets fan by birth, I'd been running my mouth against the home team all game, until about the 7th inning when the guy in back of me had finally had enough and peppered me with a tirade so wide-ranging in its targeted demographics as to be almost egalitarian in approach. Suffice it to say that race, religion, educational background, sexual orientation, and choice of profession all made an appearance in a barnburner of a speech notable not just for its viciousness, but for the neat oratorical trick of wrapping all these things into one all-encompassing quality, which I have since come to define simply as \"un-Yankeeness.\" Congenital, no doubt.\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In the midst of this violent screed, I managed to peep out something to the effect that \"this is America,\" and that our location within this geopolitical boundary conferred upon me, according to the country's Constitution, the right of free speech, which I believed included the right to publicly proclaim that the New York Yankees suck. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>To which he replied, \"This isn't America, this is \u003cem>Yankee\u003c/em>land.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

Wearing the wrong colors, wishing the wrong outcome, and most of all, relying on a wrong assumption:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That you \u003cem>can\u003c/em> root for the other guys, that you can even imply in an ironic-yet-cathartic way that the home team sucks without fearing for your life, because, after all, it's only a game.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This sort of tribalism related to sports teams -- what's it all about?
