"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

From the \u003ca href=\"http://blogs.sacbee.com/capitolalertlatest/2011/05/two-prominent-women-lawyers-gr.html\">Sacramento Bee\u003c/a>, May 6:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Two prominent women lawyers’ groups are the latest to lambaste Assemblyman Charles Calderon for what they said were inappropriate comments about California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye at a committee hearing on Tuesday.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Whittier Democrat, at the Assembly Judiciary Committee to push his controversial bill to decentralize control of California courts, said the issue wasn’t about Cantil-Sakauye.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But he also said: “It isn’t ‘Is she nice?’ ‘Cause she is. ‘Is she smart?’ ‘Cause she is. ‘Is she attractive?’ ‘Cause she is. It isn’t about that.”\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Yesterday, in a \u003ca href=\"http://www.nbclosangeles.com/multimedia/California_s_New_Chief_Justice_Reflects_on_First_Six_Months_Los_Angeles-122940373.html\">news interview\u003c/a> with NBC Los Angeles, the Chief Justice spoke about that comment, sounding pretty peeved. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“I was troubled by that… But when it comes from majority leader in the context of a very serous hearing where courts are lining up, where all the attorneys who are there are on the side of judicial council opposing that bill and a critical question is asked, ‘why are you taking this power away from the new chief justice four months into her administration,’ that’s when that answer is unresponsive and is offensive, and is not at all responsive to the question.
