"bio": "Amanda joined KQED Science’s engagement team as a Senior Audience Engagement Strategist in the spring of 2019. She has helped craft messaging around wildfires, the coronavirus pandemic, climate change and many other stories. She has also brought KQED Science to new platforms such as Reddit’s Ask Me Anything series. Prior to joining KQED Science, Amanda spent seven years as an engagement producer with Forum, KQED’s daily live call-in show. She got her start in radio at KALW's weekly call in show, City Visions, before going on to an internship and stint at NPR's Talk of the Nation.\r\n\r\nPrior to journalism, Amanda taught English at Lowell High School. She's a native of Petaluma and currently lives under the \"South San Francisco the Industrial City\" sign in South City. She believes that engagement is vital to news’s future and that good journalism listens as much as it asks questions.",

"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

But tamp down the fiery rhetoric in hopes of projecting a \"kinder, gentler\" image... and risk leaving the party faithful full of accusations that moderates are trying to water down the GOP brand...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It's a dilemma that has frankly been playing itself out for several years running at the semi-annual (yes, two of them every year) state GOP confabs. This weekend's gathering... seemed to find California Republicans trying to do both things, though with a decided tilt to the red meat base strategy.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That was best seen by having Newt Gingrich, the opinionated and often bombastic former House speaker, as their featured attraction. But tamp down the fiery rhetoric in hopes of projecting a \"kinder, gentler\" image... and risk leaving the party faithful full of accusations that moderates are trying to water down the GOP brand...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It's a dilemma that has frankly been playing itself out for several years running at the semi-annual (yes, two of them every year) state GOP confabs. This weekend's gathering... seemed to find California Republicans trying to do both things, though with a decided tilt to the red meat base strategy.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That was best seen by having Newt Gingrich, the opinionated and often bombastic former House speaker, as their featured attraction. In a \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/02/25/MNFV1NCFCL.DTL&tsp=1\">45-minute lecture like oratory\u003c/a>, the Georgia politician not only excoriated President Barack Obama on foreign and energy policy, he also seemed to wade into issues that certainly wouldn't seem to produce headlines that would leave middle-of-the-road voters clamoring to vote Republican.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Take, for example, his strong endorsement of offshore oil drilling.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"85% of the offshore acreage is not available,\" said Gingrich in a critique of the President's recent comments about offshore drilling options. \"I think you'd find, if we opened up offshore, it would be amazing how fast things would be developed.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>While Gingrich went on to say that states should control their own coasts, he boasted that even California pols would change their tune under a Gingrich administration. \"Sacramento would start thinking seriously about development\" under his proposal to allow states to keep 50% of offshore oil drilling royalties, he said. \u003ca href=\"http://blogs.kqed.org/capitalnotes/2012/02/26/california-republicans-try-balancing-act-again/\">Full post here\u003c/a>\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>By the way, the \u003ca href=\"http://www.sacbee.com/2012/02/23/4284648/field-poll-obama-resurgent-in.html\">latest Field Poll shows Obama beating Gingrich\u003c/a> in a general section matchup 56 percent to 33 percent, roughly the same margin by which the president would defeat Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, according to the survey.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

If you’re a strong proponent of moving forward with climate policy and legislative action in this country, the Heartland Institute is Darth Vader. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So suddenly a bunch of sensitive documents appear: budget information, donor lists, strategy and so forth. One of the strategies is consideration of a program to go into public schools with a curriculum to counter the prevailing climate science.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So there’s already a huge, roiling debate on this when Peter Gleick says on his Huffington Post blog on Monday that ‘I did it.’ But he says he wasn’t the first to purloin the documents, that some anonymous source sent them to him, and in an effort to authenticate that, he impersonated someone from Heartland in order to get them to send him the documents separately, so he could compare them. The problem: We have trouble realistically gauging how much of it and how quickly we can eat fresh. The temptation are so great at the market, we lumber home with sackfuls of the stuff. (Credit: KQED/Rachael Myrow)\u003c/figcaption>\u003c/figure>\n\u003cp>This is the time of year my colleagues dump shopping bags full of Eureka and Meyer lemons on the newsroom table. Takers abound, even if they're just adding to the piles at home.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I recently talked with Evan Kleiman, host of KCRW’s \"Good Food,\" for the \u003ca href=\"http://www.californiareport.org/\">California Report\u003c/a>. She says the nature of citrus temptation has shifted over the last 10 years or so. “It seems that we’ve gone from just a couple of varieties, even in the farmers markets...Now, it’s just this complete rainbow.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>One quick glance at UC Riverside’s \u003ca href=\"http://www.citrusvariety.ucr.edu/citrus/alphabetical.html\">citrus variety collection\u003c/a>, and you can see how vast the rainbow really is. Alphabetically, the list ranges from the \u003ca href=\"http://www.citrusvariety.ucr.edu/citrus/abhayapuri.html\">Abhayapuri lime\u003c/a> to the \u003ca href=\"http://www.citrusvariety.ucr.edu/citrus/zhuluan_3981.html\">Zhuluan sour orange hybrid\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Because of this plethora of varieties - some of the fruit are sun worshipers, others are lovers of coastal cool - most Californians can enjoy hyper-locally grown citrus. Northerners at this time of year may be limited to lemons, because a mandarin takes forever to sweeten close to the coast. But travel to the inland counties of the Bay Area, and your host will be foisting bags of mandarins and oranges on you as you head out the door. \u003cem>Southern\u003c/em> Californians enjoy citrus year-round, but let's not dwell on that aromatic fact right now.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Fortunately, citrus is very versatile in the kitchen.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Squeeze the juice into cocktails and salad dressings, or in sauces both savory and sweet. Slice wedges and toss them into water glasses, or onto fish headed for the broiler. Kleiman likes citrus on meat, too. For example:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Evan’s version \u003cem>of Mark Bittman’s Pot Roast with Cranberries \u003c/em>without the Cranberries\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>2 pound boneless chuck in one or two big pieces\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Enough Sugar for dredging\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>2 tablespoons vegetable oil\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Salt and freshly ground black pepper\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>1 cup Sherry Vinegar\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>1 juicy orange\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>2 cups “Mediterranean” Apricots or Pitted Dates, or Pitted Prunes\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>2 onions, peeled and sliced (optional)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>2 garlic cloves\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>1 cup tomato sauce (optional)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Preheat oven to 375°.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Heat heavy ovenproof casserole over high heat. Place sugar on plate. Dredge meat in sugar on all sides. When oil is hot add meat to pan. Allow the meat to become deeply caramelized to a dark brown, turning it as necessary with tongs to allow browning everywhere. When the meat is browned add the vinegar to the pan and deglaze, scraping underneath the meat to get at the dark bits. Remove from heat.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Squeeze the juice from the orange onto the meat and throw in the squeezed halves for flavor. Add the garlic cloves, salt and pepper to taste and the dried fruit. If you want a more traditional eastern European flavor add the optional onions and tomato sauce. Cover pot, place in 375° oven and cook meat for a minimum of 2 hours or until fork tender.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Kleiman’s currently obsessed with the Rangpur lime. It’s orange on the outside and inside, but it’s “limier than the limiest lime that you can imagine.” She’s taken to preserving them in salt. That “transforms the peel into something luscious and edible, and it mellows out the bitterness.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This treatment works well with lemons, too. My two favorite ways to prepare them are with \u003ca href=\"http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Spicy-Crab-Spaghettini-with-Preserved-Lemon-242285\">crab and pasta\u003c/a> or as the Secret Ingredient in David Lebovitz’s \u003ca href=\"http://www.davidlebovitz.com/2009/11/israeli-couscous-with-butternut/\">Israeli Couscous with Butternut Squash & Preserved Lemons\u003c/a>. (OK, if the ingredient is in the title of the dish, maybe it’s not that secret.) My next citrus adventure is no doubt the recipes for \u003ca href=\"http://ihavealemontree.com/?p=955\">pound cake with lemon curd and berries\u003c/a>, found on the food blog of Kleiman's producer, Gillian Ferguson. The name of that blog? I Have Lemon Tree.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I also called up California’s maven of mandarins, guru of grapefruit, leading light of lemons … David Karp, at UCR’s Department of Botany. I can’t type as fast as he can talk, so I’ll limit myself to his latest obsession, the \u003ca href=\"http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-marketwatch-20120210,0,4339226.story\">Dekopon\u003c/a>, a Japanese hybrid of mandarin and orange you may spot in the market labeled as “Sumo.” Karp says they’re at their best this time of year and more widely available than they were just last year, when they were introduced. Karp’s review: “Intense aroma, easy to peel, gossamer thin membranes, flesh firm at first bite but then melts in your mouth, very sweet and tart at the same time.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I don't about you, but I'm sold on the Sumo. In fact, I'm ending this post now, so I can go out and get some.\u003c/p>\n\n",

The problem: We have trouble realistically gauging how much of it and how quickly we can eat fresh. The temptation are so great at the market, we lumber home with sackfuls of the stuff. Or perhaps the trees in the backyard are dropping their yield faster than we can get to it...\u003c/p>\n\u003cfigure id=\"attachment_56553\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 300px\">\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2012/02/IMG_1276cropped.jpg\">\u003cimg class=\"size-medium wp-image-56553\" title=\"IMG_1276cropped\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2012/02/IMG_1276cropped-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\">\u003c/a>\u003cfigcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">On the stoop of a San Francisco domecile. (Credit: KQED/Rachael Myrow)\u003c/figcaption>\u003c/figure>\n\u003cp>This is the time of year my colleagues dump shopping bags full of Eureka and Meyer lemons on the newsroom table. Takers abound, even if they're just adding to the piles at home.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I recently talked with Evan Kleiman, host of KCRW’s \"Good Food,\" for the \u003ca href=\"http://www.californiareport.org/\">California Report\u003c/a>. She says the nature of citrus temptation has shifted over the last 10 years or so. “It seems that we’ve gone from just a couple of varieties, even in the farmers markets...Now, it’s just this complete rainbow.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>One quick glance at UC Riverside’s \u003ca href=\"http://www.citrusvariety.ucr.edu/citrus/alphabetical.html\">citrus variety collection\u003c/a>, and you can see how vast the rainbow really is. Alphabetically, the list ranges from the \u003ca href=\"http://www.citrusvariety.ucr.edu/citrus/abhayapuri.html\">Abhayapuri lime\u003c/a> to the \u003ca href=\"http://www.citrusvariety.ucr.edu/citrus/zhuluan_3981.html\">Zhuluan sour orange hybrid\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Because of this plethora of varieties - some of the fruit are sun worshipers, others are lovers of coastal cool - most Californians can enjoy hyper-locally grown citrus. Northerners at this time of year may be limited to lemons, because a mandarin takes forever to sweeten close to the coast. But travel to the inland counties of the Bay Area, and your host will be foisting bags of mandarins and oranges on you as you head out the door. \u003cem>Southern\u003c/em> Californians enjoy citrus year-round, but let's not dwell on that aromatic fact right now.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

"content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Fortunately, citrus is very versatile in the kitchen.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Squeeze the juice into cocktails and salad dressings, or in sauces both savory and sweet. Slice wedges and toss them into water glasses, or onto fish headed for the broiler. Kleiman likes citrus on meat, too. For example:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Evan’s version \u003cem>of Mark Bittman’s Pot Roast with Cranberries \u003c/em>without the Cranberries\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>2 pound boneless chuck in one or two big pieces\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Enough Sugar for dredging\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>2 tablespoons vegetable oil\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Salt and freshly ground black pepper\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>1 cup Sherry Vinegar\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>1 juicy orange\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>2 cups “Mediterranean” Apricots or Pitted Dates, or Pitted Prunes\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>2 onions, peeled and sliced (optional)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>2 garlic cloves\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>1 cup tomato sauce (optional)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Preheat oven to 375°.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Heat heavy ovenproof casserole over high heat. Place sugar on plate. Dredge meat in sugar on all sides. When oil is hot add meat to pan. Allow the meat to become deeply caramelized to a dark brown, turning it as necessary with tongs to allow browning everywhere. When the meat is browned add the vinegar to the pan and deglaze, scraping underneath the meat to get at the dark bits. Remove from heat.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Squeeze the juice from the orange onto the meat and throw in the squeezed halves for flavor. Add the garlic cloves, salt and pepper to taste and the dried fruit. If you want a more traditional eastern European flavor add the optional onions and tomato sauce. Cover pot, place in 375° oven and cook meat for a minimum of 2 hours or until fork tender.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Kleiman’s currently obsessed with the Rangpur lime. It’s orange on the outside and inside, but it’s “limier than the limiest lime that you can imagine.” She’s taken to preserving them in salt. That “transforms the peel into something luscious and edible, and it mellows out the bitterness.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This treatment works well with lemons, too. My two favorite ways to prepare them are with \u003ca href=\"http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Spicy-Crab-Spaghettini-with-Preserved-Lemon-242285\">crab and pasta\u003c/a> or as the Secret Ingredient in David Lebovitz’s \u003ca href=\"http://www.davidlebovitz.com/2009/11/israeli-couscous-with-butternut/\">Israeli Couscous with Butternut Squash & Preserved Lemons\u003c/a>. (OK, if the ingredient is in the title of the dish, maybe it’s not that secret.) My next citrus adventure is no doubt the recipes for \u003ca href=\"http://ihavealemontree.com/?p=955\">pound cake with lemon curd and berries\u003c/a>, found on the food blog of Kleiman's producer, Gillian Ferguson. The name of that blog? I Have Lemon Tree.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I also called up California’s maven of mandarins, guru of grapefruit, leading light of lemons … David Karp, at UCR’s Department of Botany. I can’t type as fast as he can talk, so I’ll limit myself to his latest obsession, the \u003ca href=\"http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-marketwatch-20120210,0,4339226.story\">Dekopon\u003c/a>, a Japanese hybrid of mandarin and orange you may spot in the market labeled as “Sumo.” Karp says they’re at their best this time of year and more widely available than they were just last year, when they were introduced. Karp’s review: “Intense aroma, easy to peel, gossamer thin membranes, flesh firm at first bite but then melts in your mouth, very sweet and tart at the same time.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I don't about you, but I'm sold on the Sumo. In fact, I'm ending this post now, so I can go out and get some.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003c/div>\u003c/p>",
