"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. Marple Newtown School District, a Pennsylvania case involving a kindergarten student whose mother was barred from reading a Bible passage at a show-and-tell day. At the time, the university \u003ca href=\"http://newscenter.berkeley.edu/2010/09/28/athletics/\">said\u003c/a> that a worsening budget situation had rendered the school's athletic program unsustainable, and that baseball, women's lacrosse, and gymnastics -- both men's and women's -- would be discontinued at the end of this academic year. The plan for men's rugby, widely considered to be the most \u003ca href=\"http://www.calbears.com/sports/m-rugby/archive/cal-m-rugby-a-history.html\">successful\u003c/a> varsity sport in university history, was to downgrade it to a \"varsity club.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The announcement, naturally, was met with considerable \u003ca href=\"http://excusemeformyvoice.com/blog/?p=2233\">consternation\u003c/a> by Cal fans and alumni. (The quote from former Cal baseball player \u003ca href=\"http://articles.sfgate.com/2010-09-29/sports/24102133_1_baseball-program-major-leagues-baseman\">Jeff Kent\u003c/a>: 'You're telling me the University of California is not going to have a baseball program? ... If I could put it in one word, I'm disgusted right now. I'm absolutely embarrassed to be a Cal baseball alum knowing the school is cutting the program.\")\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The pressure was enough so that two months later, Director of Athletics \u003ca href=\"http://www.calbears.com/genrel/barbour_sandy00.html\">Sandy Barbour\u003c/a> issued an \u003ca href=\"http://www.calbears.com/genrel/sbletter112910.html\">apologia\u003c/a> and an \u003ca href=\"http://www.calbears.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/cal/genrel/auto_pdf/112910IAFAQ?hq_e=el&hq_m=95695&hq_l=2&hq_v=a97e697ce8\">FAQ\u003c/a>, which included a section that seemed meant to discourage any concerted effort to save the moribund teams:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cem>Is there a possibility that some or all of teams could be reinstated?\u003c/em>\u003cbr>\nTo preserve the current structure with 29 teams would require the department’s donor base to come forward with unprecedented levels of additional philanthropy...A careful analysis indicated – and we believe continues to indicate – that it would be unrealistic to expect a significant number of donors to immediately increase their giving far above current levels.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The present situation already relies upon considerable and growing levels of annual philanthropy in the form of annual and endowment giving, an amount that has exceeded $15 million per year recently. In addition, the department is in the midst of a major campaign to fund the retrofit of Memorial Stadium in order to comply with the UC Regents’ requirement that the facility be renovated. Any effective effort to “save” teams would need to be incremental to goals currently in place and could not “cannibalize” any current endeavors.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Keeping these concerns in mind, neither the campus nor department leadership believes that the Cal Athletics community is likely to be able to raise the permanent funding required to offset the expenses associated with impacted teams. To make up the difference and maintain an acceptable level of longterm support for all 29 programs would call for, at the absolute minimum, a doubling of the current Athletic Department endowment, now at just under $70 million, in a relatively short period of time...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>... It has been our view that the availability of the substantial incremental philanthropic commitments necessary to prevent a reduction in scope of our IA program is and has been quite unlikely. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In the event, however, that members of the Cal Athletics community do come forward with significant incremental philanthropic commitments to provide for multiple years of operating costs for the impacted group of teams and a long-term plan for permanent funding (endowment), the campus would of course review such a proposal and consider other alternatives presented. As a pragmatic matter and in fairness to Cal’s student-athletes and coaches, who are in the process of contemplating their future academic and career plans, the uncertainty around possibility of immediate reinstatement cannot be allowed to extend longer than January 31, 2011, which would be over four months after announcement of the scope reduction.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Well that deadline has now passed, and the university, at least publicly, is considering the possibility of reinstatement. Cal spokesman Dan Mogulof told the Tribune that the \"process of 'review and analysis' already had begun and that the chancellor hopes to make a decision as soon as Friday.\" \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Former Cal baseball player Doug Nickle, of \u003ca href=\"http://www.savecalsports.com/\">Save Cal Sports\u003c/a>, is optimistic. From the \u003ca href=\"http://www.mercurynews.com/sports/ci_17254573\">Tribune\u003c/a>: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>(Nickle said the) five programs have \"conservatively\" raised between $10 million and $12 million and believe they have several other potential large pledges coming this week. Nickle characterized himself as \"incredibly\" optimistic. \"I would be shocked if we didn't get reinstatement,\" he said.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>From the Save Cal Sports site: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Just a brief message to let you know that we are absolutely still moving in the right direction. The plan for men's rugby, widely considered to be the most \u003ca href=\"http://www.calbears.com/sports/m-rugby/archive/cal-m-rugby-a-history.html\">successful\u003c/a> varsity sport in university history, was to downgrade it to a \"varsity club.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The announcement, naturally, was met with considerable \u003ca href=\"http://excusemeformyvoice.com/blog/?p=2233\">consternation\u003c/a> by Cal fans and alumni. (The quote from former Cal baseball player \u003ca href=\"http://articles.sfgate.com/2010-09-29/sports/24102133_1_baseball-program-major-leagues-baseman\">Jeff Kent\u003c/a>: 'You're telling me the University of California is not going to have a baseball program? ... If I could put it in one word, I'm disgusted right now. I'm absolutely embarrassed to be a Cal baseball alum knowing the school is cutting the program.\")\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The pressure was enough so that two months later, Director of Athletics \u003ca href=\"http://www.calbears.com/genrel/barbour_sandy00.html\">Sandy Barbour\u003c/a> issued an \u003ca href=\"http://www.calbears.com/genrel/sbletter112910.html\">apologia\u003c/a> and an \u003ca href=\"http://www.calbears.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/cal/genrel/auto_pdf/112910IAFAQ?hq_e=el&hq_m=95695&hq_l=2&hq_v=a97e697ce8\">FAQ\u003c/a>, which included a section that seemed meant to discourage any concerted effort to save the moribund teams:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cem>Is there a possibility that some or all of teams could be reinstated?\u003c/em>\u003cbr>\nTo preserve the current structure with 29 teams would require the department’s donor base to come forward with unprecedented levels of additional philanthropy...A careful analysis indicated – and we believe continues to indicate – that it would be unrealistic to expect a significant number of donors to immediately increase their giving far above current levels.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The present situation already relies upon considerable and growing levels of annual philanthropy in the form of annual and endowment giving, an amount that has exceeded $15 million per year recently. In addition, the department is in the midst of a major campaign to fund the retrofit of Memorial Stadium in order to comply with the UC Regents’ requirement that the facility be renovated. Any effective effort to “save” teams would need to be incremental to goals currently in place and could not “cannibalize” any current endeavors.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Keeping these concerns in mind, neither the campus nor department leadership believes that the Cal Athletics community is likely to be able to raise the permanent funding required to offset the expenses associated with impacted teams. To make up the difference and maintain an acceptable level of longterm support for all 29 programs would call for, at the absolute minimum, a doubling of the current Athletic Department endowment, now at just under $70 million, in a relatively short period of time...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>... It has been our view that the availability of the substantial incremental philanthropic commitments necessary to prevent a reduction in scope of our IA program is and has been quite unlikely. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In the event, however, that members of the Cal Athletics community do come forward with significant incremental philanthropic commitments to provide for multiple years of operating costs for the impacted group of teams and a long-term plan for permanent funding (endowment), the campus would of course review such a proposal and consider other alternatives presented. As a pragmatic matter and in fairness to Cal’s student-athletes and coaches, who are in the process of contemplating their future academic and career plans, the uncertainty around possibility of immediate reinstatement cannot be allowed to extend longer than January 31, 2011, which would be over four months after announcement of the scope reduction.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Well that deadline has now passed, and the university, at least publicly, is considering the possibility of reinstatement. Cal spokesman Dan Mogulof told the Tribune that the \"process of 'review and analysis' already had begun and that the chancellor hopes to make a decision as soon as Friday.\" \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

The box full of letters, photos, and books was placed behind the building’s cornerstone by San Francisco Mayor \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P._H._McCarthy\">P.H. “Pinhead” McCarthy\u003c/a> in 1910.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The \u003ca href=\"http://media.baycitizen.org/uploaded/images/2011/1/cleveland-school-1909/original/Cleveland%20school%201909.jpg\">\u003cstrong>Bay Citizen\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?f=/c/a/2011/01/27/BAP01HEK9S.DTL&object=%2Fc%2Fpictures%2F2011%2F01%2F26%2Fba-timecapsule27_0502884791.jpg\">\u003cstrong>San Francisco Chronicle\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> have put up two really good ones.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/01/26/BAP01HEK9S.DTL\">Chronicle\u003c/a> explains how the box full of ancient mementos was discovered:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Former Cleveland student and now school volunteer John Weidinger \u003ca href=\"http://www.jsyk.com/2010/12/17/san-francisco-school-discovers-100-year-old-time-capsule/\">discovered\u003c/a> the time capsule’s existence while researching the history of the 100-year-old school.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The capsule was mentioned briefly in a San Francisco Call newspaper story at the time, saying then-Mayor P.J. “Pinhead” McCarthy placed the box behind the cornerstone after the children sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It didn’t say what was inside.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Had I not found that one sentence, maybe we might have lost that part of San Francisco history,” Weidinger said Wednesday moments before he pulled the contents out of the box in front of the students.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>During the school’s winter break, district carpenters cut around the cornerstone and confirmed the box existed. The box full of letters, photos, and books was placed behind the building’s cornerstone by San Francisco Mayor \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P._H._McCarthy\">P.H. “Pinhead” McCarthy\u003c/a> in 1910.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The \u003ca href=\"http://media.baycitizen.org/uploaded/images/2011/1/cleveland-school-1909/original/Cleveland%20school%201909.jpg\">\u003cstrong>Bay Citizen\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?f=/c/a/2011/01/27/BAP01HEK9S.DTL&object=%2Fc%2Fpictures%2F2011%2F01%2F26%2Fba-timecapsule27_0502884791.jpg\">\u003cstrong>San Francisco Chronicle\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> have put up two really good ones.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/01/26/BAP01HEK9S.DTL\">Chronicle\u003c/a> explains how the box full of ancient mementos was discovered:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Former Cleveland student and now school volunteer John Weidinger \u003ca href=\"http://www.jsyk.com/2010/12/17/san-francisco-school-discovers-100-year-old-time-capsule/\">discovered\u003c/a> the time capsule’s existence while researching the history of the 100-year-old school.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The capsule was mentioned briefly in a San Francisco Call newspaper story at the time, saying then-Mayor P.J. “Pinhead” McCarthy placed the box behind the cornerstone after the children sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It didn’t say what was inside.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Had I not found that one sentence, maybe we might have lost that part of San Francisco history,” Weidinger said Wednesday moments before he pulled the contents out of the box in front of the students.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>During the school’s winter break, district carpenters cut around the cornerstone and confirmed the box existed. It took two more days to drill the box out of concrete while protecting the cornerstone.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

NO MONEY. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Chronicle of Higher Education on Wednesday \u003ca href=\"http://chronicle.com/article/Why-Some-Elite-Colleges-Give/125998/\">interviewed\u003c/a> Taylor Walsh, the author of a book about higher education online, in an article called “Why Some Elite Colleges Give Away Courses Online.” One commenter wrote: \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“I wish these online courses had been available when I was choosing a college more than 50 years ago. They would have been valuable as an aid in determining the degree of difficulty I could expect in a course at an elite university.”\u003cbr>\n\u003c!--more-->\u003cbr>\nIndeed.
