I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. Exceptions in California include San Francisco, an urban county, and Sacramento, home of the state Capitol and outlying suburbs….\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We’re like 40 percent higher than L.A., which is very surprising,” said Dr. Stanton Glantz, a professor of medicine and director of UCSF’s Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education. Los Angeles had a smoking prevalence of 10.4 percent.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>The Chronicle article goes on to cite a project director of the \u003ca href=\"http://lgbtpartnership.org/\">California LGBT Tobacco Education Partnership \u003c/a> as attributing the city’s high smoking numbers in part to “significantly higher rates” among gays and lesbians. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In the \u003ca href=\"http://www.baycitizen.org/health/story/smoking-rates-sputter-bay-area/\">Bay Citizen\u003c/a>, Alyonik Hrushow, director of the San Francisco Department of Public Health’s Tobacco Free Project, blames the lag in progress on successful cigarette company marketing to the city’s youth culture. \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>The most recent example of such an advertising strategy is a campaign called Camel’s Break Free Adventure contest, which focuses on 10 hipster locales around the country, including Austin, Texas; Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in New York City; and the Haight neighborhood in San Francisco.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“The locations have several qualities in common, including an association with independent music, fun times, rebellion and freedom of the road,” said Matthew L. Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, in a statement denouncing the campaign. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There’s even a limited-edition Haight-Ashbury pack of cigarettes featuring the iconic street sign. “The Summer of Love, protests to be civil and a rainbow of counterculture,” reads the accompanying marketing hype. “Whether you started here or put flowers in your hair, grabbed a drum and hitched a ride on a painted minibus, Camel lights up this little piece of San Francisco that pulses with the spirit to evolve, revolve or revolt and follows the force to break free.” \u003ca href=\"http://www.baycitizen.org/health/story/smoking-rates-sputter-bay-area/\">Full article\u003c/a>\u003c/p>\n\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Whatever the reason for San Francisco’s inability to enter the top-tier of non-smoking California counties, it’s not for a want of trying. The San Francisco Tobacco Free Project lists all of the \u003ca href=\"http://sftfc.globalink.org/coalitionaccom.html\">local anti-smoking ordinances\u003c/a> that have gone into effect since 1988.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And \u003ca href=\"http://www.tobaccofreeca.com/\">statewide\u003c/a>, there’s more to come. "content": "\u003cp>ProPublica published a pair of articles last night in their \u003ca href=\"http://www.propublica.org/topic/dollars-for-doctors\">ongoing investigation\u003c/a> into pharmaceutical company payments to doctors who give promotional talks on the firms’ behalf. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>One of the articles \u003ca href=\"http://www.propublica.org/article/drug-companies-retain-tight-control-of-physicians-presentations\">\u003cstrong>called out\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> certain members of Stanford’s medical school faculty, including the vice chairman of Stanford’s department of medicine, as breaking the \u003ca href=\"http://med.stanford.edu/coi/siip/\">Stanford Industry Interactions Policy\u003c/a> by giving such talks. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Philip A. Pizzo, dean of Stanford’s School of Medicine, got wind of the ProPublica article last week, and he was not pleased. This is evidenced by the following \u003ca href=\"http://deansnewsletter.stanford.edu/archive/12_13_10.html#4\">item\u003c/a> in The Dean’s Newsletter, in which Pizzo implies that excuses he’s heard from some busted docs stretch the bounds of credulity in the same way that a teenager’s not really being clear on that Don’t-Stay-Out-Till-Six-A.M. policy does.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nAlthough it seems implausible, I suppose it is possible that a Stanford faculty member might still be unaware of the School of Medicine Policies on Academic Industry Relationships. These policies are listed on our available website (see: http://med.stanford.edu/coi/siip/), have been widely disseminated, and I have communicated about them frequently as changes have taken place over years. Here’s just a sampling of some of those communications over years:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>(A list of 17 items follows.)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Why am I focusing on this issue and some of my past communications about academic industry relations now? In 2010, the Congress passed legislation that requires pharmaceutical companies to disclose all payments to doctors by 2013. Seven pharmaceutical firms are now doing so, and the databases for these companies are publicly available. ProPublica, an independent, non-profit online investigative newsroom that produces journalism in the public interest, has been utilizing these databases and is running a series entitled, Dollars for Docs, What Drug Companies are Paying Your Doctor (http://www.propublica.org/topic/dollars-for-doctors).\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>We have been informed that very shortly, ProPublica will be releasing a new investigation about how pharmaceutical firms have paid academic researchers and clinicians to participate in speakers’ bureaus that market their products. Unfortunately, a small number of our faculty will be highlighted in this article.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Our preliminary investigation suggests that some of the individuals likely to be reported by ProPublica had understandable reasons for confusion about Stanford’s policies and have already addressed them and ceased activities like “speakers’ bureau” participation. \u003cem>Others, though, offered explanations why their activities continued that are difficult if not impossible to reconcile with our policy, and here we have concerns\u003c/em> (emphasis mine). I am fully cognizant that changes of the type we have witnessed in academic-industry relations and related conflicts of interest take time to disseminate and also to result in changes in behavior and activity. But, as noted above, there have been a lot of prior communications about the policies at Stanford and many stories in the lay and medical press about the problems associated with physicians serving in marketing roles. The element of sex appeal is certainly prevalent in our restaurants, and is the essence of the Hooters experience, but the Hooters brand of sex appeal is wholesome and that of the All-American cheerleader, not a seedy strip club,” said Mike McNeil the VP of Marketing for Hooters of America. “These complaints are merely last gasp efforts by an organization that lost this battle decades ago. It is time for NOW to accept the fact that the public likes Hooters and there is really nothing they can do about it. Hooters is no more in violation of California’s adult entertainment codes than the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition is. However guys can’t do that job either,” concluded McNeil.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The company is concerned that the efforts of NOW are wasting tax payer dollars and distracting law enforcement authorities from pursuing real crime. Last month, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors \u003ca href=\"http://www.baycitizen.org/blogs/pulse-of-the-bay/sf-supes-ban-happy-meals/\">passed a law\u003c/a>, over Mayor Gavin Newsom's veto, requiring that meals dished out with promotional toys meet certain nutritional requirements. "content": "\u003cp>It used to be that people complained that New York and Hollywood were setting the cultural agenda. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But now it's the Silicon Valley search and social media companies that seem to dictate what's hot and what's not. Not, however, through direct creation of content. Rather, Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, and Twitter function as tools to find and express what masses of people are interested in. Thus, the release of their year-end reports on top topics are treated as an illumination of what the culture had on its mind during the previous 12 months. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I'm finding this year's lists especially interesting, as Google, Yahoo!, Twitter, and Facebook all report that Marcel Proust's great literary masterwork, \"In Search of Lost Time,\" was the No. 1 searched-for topic among all American web users this year. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Ha ha ha. Not really. But if you don't like the ascension of Justin Bieber as a topic of national conversation this year, what can you do? Not, however, through direct creation of content. Rather, Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, and Twitter function as tools to find and express what masses of people are interested in. Thus, the release of their year-end reports on top topics are treated as an illumination of what the culture had on its mind during the previous 12 months. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I'm finding this year's lists especially interesting, as Google, Yahoo!, Twitter, and Facebook all report that Marcel Proust's great literary masterwork, \"In Search of Lost Time,\" was the No. 1 searched-for topic among all American web users this year. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Ha ha ha. Not really. But if you don't like the ascension of Justin Bieber as a topic of national conversation this year, what can you do?
