"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

Meanwhile, the \u003ca href=\"http://sfpublicpress.org/news/2011-02/university-seeks-quick-removal-of-kusf-radio-transmitter-from-campus\">\u003cstrong>SF Public Press\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> reports that Classical Public Radio Network, which bought the university's broadcasting license, has filed a request with the FCC to relocate the school's transmitter to Sausalito.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But today it was all about DJs Irwin (from the Sleeves on Hearts show), Carolyn, Stereo Steve, Jantine B., Harry D. (In The Soul Kitchen), and DJ Schmeejay (Radiodrome). But here are just a few links for those who want to get a taste of the computer's victory over the best Jeopardy players in the world, in what either heralds humankind's inevitable decline at the hands of the machines, or simply means you should forget about trying out for that spot on Wheel of Fortune.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>PBS Newshour has a great \u003ca href=\"http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/2011/02/watson-wins-ibms-machine-rages-against-jeopardy-champs.html\">\u003cstrong>page\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> up today with all of its reports on Jeopardy's new champ, and IBM has put up a long and interesting \u003ca href=\"http://www-943.ibm.com/innovation/us/watson/what-is-watson/the-future-of-watson.html\">\u003cstrong>video\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> on Watson's development.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And of course \u003ca href=\"http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/?story=/politics/war_room/2011/02/17/jon_stewart_obama_budget_watson\">Jon Stewart\u003c/a> got in on the act as well.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Yesterday, KQED News intern Shannon Service headed on over to Cobb's Comedy Club in San Francisco, where a bunch of IBM scientists who had worked on the project congregated to watch their creation's victory. The other day I thought, boy not only have some of those people made more money than four generations of my family cumulatively, but the last time I checked the \u003ca href=\"http://maps.google.com/help/maps/streetview/\">street view\u003c/a> of my house on Google Maps you could zoom right into my window to see I hadn't vacuumed in a month.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Which is all to say that Google's initial release of its latest online tool, called \u003ca href=\"http://www.googleartproject.com/\">\u003cstrong>Art Project\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>, is \u003cem>really\u003c/em> cool. Google! I just can't quit you...\u003cbr>\n\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Here's what the \u003ca href=\"http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/07/arts/design/07google.html\">New York Times\u003c/a> art critic Roberta Smith wrote about Art Project yesterday:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nIf art is among your full-blown obsessions or just a budding interest, Google, which has already altered the collective universe in so many ways, changed your life last week. It unveiled its Art Project, a Web endeavor that offers easy, if not yet seamless, access to some of the art treasures and interiors of 17 museums in the United States and Europe.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It is very much a work in progress, full of bugs and information gaps, and sometimes blurry, careering virtual tours. But it is already a mesmerizing, world-expanding tool for self-education. You can spend hours exploring it, examining paintings from far off and close up, poking around some of the world’s great museums all by your lonesome...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In the case of van Gogh’s famous “\u003ca href=\"http://www.googleartproject.com/museums/vangogh/the-bedroom\">Bedroom\u003c/a>,” the star painting chosen by the \u003ca href=\"http://www.googleartproject.com/museums/vangogh\">Van Gogh Museum\u003c/a> in Amsterdam, I was able to scrutinize the five framed artworks depicted on the chamber’s walls: two portraits, one still life and two works, possibly on paper, that are so cursory they look like contemporary abstractions. And I was enthralled by the clarity of the star painting of the \u003ca href=\"http://www.googleartproject.com/museums/nationalgallery\">National Gallery\u003c/a> in London, Hans Holbein’s “\u003ca href=\"http://www.googleartproject.com/museums/nationalgallery/the-ambassadors\">Ambassadors\u003c/a>,” and especially by the wonderful pile of scientific instruments — globes, sun dials, books — that occupy the imposing two-tiered stand flanked by the two young gentlemen...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The chance to look closely at paintings, especially, as made things, really to study the way artists construct an image on a flat surface, is amazing, and great practice for looking at actual works...\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>What I like best: When I zoomed really far in on one impasto brush stroke in van Gogh's \u003ca href=\"http://www.googleartproject.com/museums/moma/the-starry-night\">Starry Night\u003c/a>, I was able to touch my monitor without being tackled by a museum guard.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A round-up of views on Art Project by the critics at \u003ca href=\"http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/36928/feeling-lucky-or-let-down-a-roundup-of-art-critics-on-googles-new-mega-museum/?page=2\">Artinfo.com\u003c/a>...\u003c/p>\n\n",

I just can't quit you...\u003cbr>\n\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Here's what the \u003ca href=\"http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/07/arts/design/07google.html\">New York Times\u003c/a> art critic Roberta Smith wrote about Art Project yesterday:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nIf art is among your full-blown obsessions or just a budding interest, Google, which has already altered the collective universe in so many ways, changed your life last week. It unveiled its Art Project, a Web endeavor that offers easy, if not yet seamless, access to some of the art treasures and interiors of 17 museums in the United States and Europe.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It is very much a work in progress, full of bugs and information gaps, and sometimes blurry, careering virtual tours. But it is already a mesmerizing, world-expanding tool for self-education. You can spend hours exploring it, examining paintings from far off and close up, poking around some of the world’s great museums all by your lonesome...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In the case of van Gogh’s famous “\u003ca href=\"http://www.googleartproject.com/museums/vangogh/the-bedroom\">Bedroom\u003c/a>,” the star painting chosen by the \u003ca href=\"http://www.googleartproject.com/museums/vangogh\">Van Gogh Museum\u003c/a> in Amsterdam, I was able to scrutinize the five framed artworks depicted on the chamber’s walls: two portraits, one still life and two works, possibly on paper, that are so cursory they look like contemporary abstractions. And I was enthralled by the clarity of the star painting of the \u003ca href=\"http://www.googleartproject.com/museums/nationalgallery\">National Gallery\u003c/a> in London, Hans Holbein’s “\u003ca href=\"http://www.googleartproject.com/museums/nationalgallery/the-ambassadors\">Ambassadors\u003c/a>,” and especially by the wonderful pile of scientific instruments — globes, sun dials, books — that occupy the imposing two-tiered stand flanked by the two young gentlemen...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The chance to look closely at paintings, especially, as made things, really to study the way artists construct an image on a flat surface, is amazing, and great practice for looking at actual works...\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>What I like best: When I zoomed really far in on one impasto brush stroke in van Gogh's \u003ca href=\"http://www.googleartproject.com/museums/moma/the-starry-night\">Starry Night\u003c/a>, I was able to touch my monitor without being tackled by a museum guard.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",
