"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

Curtains down. The Last Victure Show.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I didn’t go. The time to support the Vic was in \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2010/12/01/financial-problems-could-close-curtain-on-red-vic-movie-house/\">December\u003c/a>, when Vic co-op member Claudia Lehan told us the theater was “month-to-month,” due to attendance drop-off and a large debt. Or maybe in \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2010/12/01/financial-problems-could-close-curtain-on-red-vic-movie-house/\">January\u003c/a>, when Lehan said “we’re still somewhat desperate.” Or even \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2011/05/25/red-vic-movie-theater-likely-to-close-july-25/\">May\u003c/a>, when Lehan conceded “we’re near the end,” but still hoped for a miracle — a George Lucas, perhaps, to swoop in and revive the theater’s fortunes. You know, like in the movies.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But no. I didn’t pay my respects on any of those occasions either. Like so many other narrative junkies, I no longer care to procure my fix by actually leaving the house. HBO, Netflix, iTunes, home theater… Where once I raced to see a film like, say, \u003cem>Touch of Evil\u003c/em>, on-screen \u003ca href=\"http://www.redvicmoviehouse.com/show.php?pageid=1114\">at the Red Vic\u003c/a> last week, now I \u003cem>schlep\u003c/em> there. And if I really have a hankering for Orson Welles’ late-noir classic, I own it, the celluloid purist in me now frequently trumped by considerations of finance, time and family.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Twenty years ago, I remember waiting in line at the Red Vic for well over an hour to see \u003ca href=\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgpfMxYFSmE\">\u003cem>The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T\u003c/em>\u003c/a>. If I wanted to see last night’s programmed finale, \u003cem>Harold and Maude\u003c/em>, well, someone has actually put the \u003ca href=\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6n1adZgY2I\">entire film\u003c/a> on YouTube.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But I used to go, and go often. While the Vic was never what I’d call a cathedral to moviegoing, it was still a fine place to indulge a worship of escapism. If you're going to do a weekly series, scripted or unscripted, ultimately the audience will decide if they want to come back every week based on how compelling the characters and storylines are. With the Giants, you have a fascinating and colorful collection of characters. This is not the best team money can buy, not the team with each player in the clubhouse representing their own brand, as is the case with some east coast teams that will remain nameless. We were really looking for a combination of characters that the audience would find entertaining, and a group that would give us the kind of access that we need to tell stories that would be honest and candid and fresh. \u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">Brian Wilson sets a tenor for the clubhouse in a certain way. He is beyond unguarded.\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>So the decision to go after the Giants and center around them was made before they had that trophy on the mantle. We started having that discussion last fall and it was clear they were going to be a factor in the postseason. But they hadn't yet won the championship when I started having a dialogue with Larry Baer. It went on for a series of months. There was a lot of buy-in to make this work, as you can imagine, great sensitivities from Major League Baseball, the Players Association, Brian Sabean, Larry Baer and Bill Neukom from a front-office perspective. Certainly Bruce Bochy and his players. That ultimately was the deciding factor. They had to be comfortable, they had to understand our agenda and be willing to trust us, that we wouldn’t violate the sanctity of the clubhouse, we wouldn't cross that line. It took a number of months, and there were some rocky patches along the way until we all decided to dip our toes and take a shot. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>How do you pull out interesting stuff from baseball players, who are often masters of the cliché and guard their privacy?\u003c/strong> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>When you start with a team that has Brian Wilson as a closer, there's a reasonably good chance that you're going to transcend the cliché. Brian Wilson sets a tenor for the clubhouse in a certain way. He is beyond unguarded. He is always searching for the new and the different, not to say that he does it just to tittilate, that's just who he is. He has an enormous amount of fun in his dealing with the media. I was at the ESPYs and there he was in all his glory; I can't even describe the outfit. I'm guessing they didn’t put him up to it, I'm guessing he suggested 'what if I wear this and do this and say this?' \u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">The bullpen is often a treasure trove of content.\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>The bullpen is often a treasure trove of content. I've been making baseball-related films for almost three decades. I was the writer/producer for the Phillies World Series championship film in 1980, I've been doing it for awhile. The bullpen guys are hanging out with not much to do for most of the game, and there' s a lot of free time, a lot of idleness. We once had a cookout in the bullpen on a Phillies farm team; they had a marshmallow roast in the bullpen while the game was going on. So it was natural for us to gravitate to the bullpen not just because of the presence of Brian Wilson, but because of guys like Romo, Affeldt, and Lopez, who have proven to be a great source of material and have helped us go beyond the cliché. And the stakes are high. I don't want to overstate what we're doing. But we are moving the needle a little bit in that we're shooting during the regular season, as they try to defend their World Series title and win another pennant. So to go back to the premise of interesting characters and storylines, you've got that built in. It's more documentary than reality series. One of the stumbling blocks early on, when you say reality show, people understandably run for cover, saying what is the agenda? So what we had to do is make people realize that we are baseball guys who understand the sanctity of the clubhouse and the magnitude of what's going on and the opportunity we've been given. And we're documentary filmmakers, that's my background in the business. Fly on the wall, cinema verite, stand back and let it unfold. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>One of the most dramatic moments in the season so far is the injury to Buster Posey. Devastating to him and to the Giants, but to you its luck in a sense, because it's a great story. How did you navigate that with the team? \u003c/strong> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Tricky. The Buster Posey incident presents as you said a great opportunity for storytelling, but at same time it's catastrophic for the team. And when you get involved in a project like this you kind of become part of the team. You're pulling for these guys; you have to stay non-partisan in your storytelling and filmmaking, but you can't help but be drawn to these guys, such a lovable cast of characters. So the first response is that it's horrific and hard to watch, you feel for Buster, the team, and Bochy. In fact when we were discussing how to handle our treatment t of the injury, we recalled that in the 1980 playoffs Pete Rose came barreling into Bochy, the catcher for the Astros. But you have to quickly put aside your hurts feelings and jump into action and navigate those choppy waters and try to get as broad a cross-section as possible. This became a great source of controversy. For about a week or two in baseball this was topic No 1, discussing the injury and the notion that perhaps there should be a change in the rules, should runners be allowed to barrel into catchers full-force. Bruce Bochy had a lot to say about it, Brian Sabean had a lot to say about it, so did a lot of players. Was Scott Cousins a villain or was he just doing his job? Ultimately both Sabean and Bochy had very strong comments and it was our job to include them but also to include their response to others comments and to their own. When the dust settled, there's Buster Posey coming back to the clubhouse for rehab, wheeling around on this strange contraption, which is really difficult to watch, the fallen hero. And Buster was great about granting us time and giving us his reflections. So we covered all the bases and at this point we will continue to follow Buster's rehab over the next five episodes.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\u003cp>[ad floatright]\u003c/p>\n",

"content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Why did you pick the Giants for a topic?\u003c/strong> I think when we made the decision it was really about storytelling and characters. If you're going to do a weekly series, scripted or unscripted, ultimately the audience will decide if they want to come back every week based on how compelling the characters and storylines are. With the Giants, you have a fascinating and colorful collection of characters. This is not the best team money can buy, not the team with each player in the clubhouse representing their own brand, as is the case with some east coast teams that will remain nameless. We were really looking for a combination of characters that the audience would find entertaining, and a group that would give us the kind of access that we need to tell stories that would be honest and candid and fresh. \u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">Brian Wilson sets a tenor for the clubhouse in a certain way. He is beyond unguarded.\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>So the decision to go after the Giants and center around them was made before they had that trophy on the mantle. We started having that discussion last fall and it was clear they were going to be a factor in the postseason. But they hadn't yet won the championship when I started having a dialogue with Larry Baer. It went on for a series of months. There was a lot of buy-in to make this work, as you can imagine, great sensitivities from Major League Baseball, the Players Association, Brian Sabean, Larry Baer and Bill Neukom from a front-office perspective. Certainly Bruce Bochy and his players. That ultimately was the deciding factor. They had to be comfortable, they had to understand our agenda and be willing to trust us, that we wouldn’t violate the sanctity of the clubhouse, we wouldn't cross that line. It took a number of months, and there were some rocky patches along the way until we all decided to dip our toes and take a shot. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>How do you pull out interesting stuff from baseball players, who are often masters of the cliché and guard their privacy?\u003c/strong> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>When you start with a team that has Brian Wilson as a closer, there's a reasonably good chance that you're going to transcend the cliché. Brian Wilson sets a tenor for the clubhouse in a certain way. He is beyond unguarded. He is always searching for the new and the different, not to say that he does it just to tittilate, that's just who he is. He has an enormous amount of fun in his dealing with the media. I was at the ESPYs and there he was in all his glory; I can't even describe the outfit. I'm guessing they didn’t put him up to it, I'm guessing he suggested 'what if I wear this and do this and say this?' \u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">The bullpen is often a treasure trove of content.\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>The bullpen is often a treasure trove of content. I've been making baseball-related films for almost three decades. I was the writer/producer for the Phillies World Series championship film in 1980, I've been doing it for awhile. The bullpen guys are hanging out with not much to do for most of the game, and there' s a lot of free time, a lot of idleness. We once had a cookout in the bullpen on a Phillies farm team; they had a marshmallow roast in the bullpen while the game was going on. So it was natural for us to gravitate to the bullpen not just because of the presence of Brian Wilson, but because of guys like Romo, Affeldt, and Lopez, who have proven to be a great source of material and have helped us go beyond the cliché. And the stakes are high. I don't want to overstate what we're doing. But we are moving the needle a little bit in that we're shooting during the regular season, as they try to defend their World Series title and win another pennant. So to go back to the premise of interesting characters and storylines, you've got that built in. It's more documentary than reality series. One of the stumbling blocks early on, when you say reality show, people understandably run for cover, saying what is the agenda? So what we had to do is make people realize that we are baseball guys who understand the sanctity of the clubhouse and the magnitude of what's going on and the opportunity we've been given. And we're documentary filmmakers, that's my background in the business. Fly on the wall, cinema verite, stand back and let it unfold. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>One of the most dramatic moments in the season so far is the injury to Buster Posey. Devastating to him and to the Giants, but to you its luck in a sense, because it's a great story. How did you navigate that with the team? \u003c/strong> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Tricky. The Buster Posey incident presents as you said a great opportunity for storytelling, but at same time it's catastrophic for the team. And when you get involved in a project like this you kind of become part of the team. You're pulling for these guys; you have to stay non-partisan in your storytelling and filmmaking, but you can't help but be drawn to these guys, such a lovable cast of characters. So the first response is that it's horrific and hard to watch, you feel for Buster, the team, and Bochy. In fact when we were discussing how to handle our treatment t of the injury, we recalled that in the 1980 playoffs Pete Rose came barreling into Bochy, the catcher for the Astros. But you have to quickly put aside your hurts feelings and jump into action and navigate those choppy waters and try to get as broad a cross-section as possible. This became a great source of controversy. For about a week or two in baseball this was topic No 1, discussing the injury and the notion that perhaps there should be a change in the rules, should runners be allowed to barrel into catchers full-force. Bruce Bochy had a lot to say about it, Brian Sabean had a lot to say about it, so did a lot of players. Was Scott Cousins a villain or was he just doing his job? Ultimately both Sabean and Bochy had very strong comments and it was our job to include them but also to include their response to others comments and to their own. When the dust settled, there's Buster Posey coming back to the clubhouse for rehab, wheeling around on this strange contraption, which is really difficult to watch, the fallen hero. And Buster was great about granting us time and giving us his reflections. So we covered all the bases and at this point we will continue to follow Buster's rehab over the next five episodes.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

Don't Tell Me!\"\u003c/a>, then you really don't know the show at all.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>You literally have to see it to believe it.\u003c/p>\n\u003cfigure id=\"attachment_34115\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 300px\">\u003ca href=\"//u.s.kqed.org/2011/07/15/waitwaitedit.jpg\">\u003cimg class=\"size-medium wp-image-34115 \" title=\"waitwait\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2011/07/waitwait-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\">\u003c/a>\u003cfigcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">KQED's Joshua Johnson (left) with Carl Kasell.\u003c/figcaption>\u003c/figure>\n\u003cp>We may have been the largest audience ever at San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House: packed to the rafters, standing-room-only, portable chairs covering what's usually an open orchestra pit.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I'm not surprised: KQED is the second public station I've worked at where \"Wait, Wait...\" draws an audience nearly on par with \"Morning Edition.\" This time around the NPR News quiz panel featured Faith Salie, Peter Grosz and Paula Poundstone, and \"Not My Job\" special guest Biz Stone, the co-founder of Twitter.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But that - and the fact that the show is really funny -- is all you would know about the taping if you weren't there.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>If you you've ever attended a taping (\u003ca href=\"http://www.npr.org/2011/07/02/110997820/see-the-show-live\">which I highly recommend\u003c/a>), you'd know that the actual production is not one hour plus breaks. It's more like 2 1/2 hours long! And just about every moment from the time that the house lights dim delivers.\u003cbr>\n\u003c!--more-->\u003cbr>\nExcept for what you can gasp through peals of laughter, you won't breathe much.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>After the the lights went down, the cast entered one at a time. Peter Sagal warmed up the crowd. Clearly he knows and loves the Bay Area; \"Wait, Wait...\" has played UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall about four times. And he knows that jokes about banning plastic bags and circumcision will induce the requisite response from this crowd. (Speaking of light bulbs, Paula Poundstone told a horrifyingly funny story from her San Francisco days, when she tried to remove a broken bulb from a live socket with needle-nose pliers.)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A few things were immediately striking when the actual taping began. First, the Opera House can produce dramatic, powerful sound, but the stage speakers were actually kept kind of low. I'm guessing it's to prevent feedback from the cast's microphones, and to force us to listen more and laugh just a wee bit less. If we're endlessly guffawing the whole time, that might slow things up...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Also, we quickly realized we were in for a lot more comedy than the average listener hears. You may be used to hearing a joke or two between answers, but they edit that down from about five minutes of inter-question banter. Peter, Paula, Faith, the other Peter and Biz were on a roll. One somewhat sexist joke told by Peter Sagal drew hisses from many women in the audience, but the panel ran with it and spun it into comedy gold.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And yes, they really are improvising. Sagal told me after the show that except for the questions and a few scripted elements, the vast majority of \"Wait, Wait...\" is off-the-cuff.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The biggest surprise: Biz Stone himself. He didn't seem particularly interesting at first, but he soon warmed up, revealing some things about Twitter that many of us did not know. According to Stone:\u003c/p>\n\u003cul>\n\u003cli>He did not create the term \"tweet.\" The users coined that term. Originally a message on Twitter was called a \"twitter.\" And the verb was originally twittering\" before users started \"tweeting.\"\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>140 characters? That's because the international standard for text messages has a limit of 160 characters. Cutting tweets off at 140 ensures that one's entire message, plus the name of the user, can be seen in their entirety without having to \"Click For More.\"\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>Stone says he knew Twitter would work, despite disdain from everyone he knew, when he was at a tech conference in Texas. Some of the hardcore geeks who were trying the service out tweeted that they were assembling at a bar, and within minutes, it was packed.Soon after, the company was formed in San Francisco.\u003c/li>\n\u003c/ul>\n\u003cp>The show ended with a few \"pickups\": bits of dialogue that needed to be taped again for whatever reason (probably because we were laughing too hard in the background). Afterward, the house lights came up and Sagal took questions from the audience. It's more like 2 1/2 hours long! And just about every moment from the time that the house lights dim delivers.\u003cbr>\n\u003c!--more-->\u003cbr>\nExcept for what you can gasp through peals of laughter, you won't breathe much.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>After the the lights went down, the cast entered one at a time. Peter Sagal warmed up the crowd. Clearly he knows and loves the Bay Area; \"Wait, Wait...\" has played UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall about four times. And he knows that jokes about banning plastic bags and circumcision will induce the requisite response from this crowd. (Speaking of light bulbs, Paula Poundstone told a horrifyingly funny story from her San Francisco days, when she tried to remove a broken bulb from a live socket with needle-nose pliers.)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A few things were immediately striking when the actual taping began. First, the Opera House can produce dramatic, powerful sound, but the stage speakers were actually kept kind of low. I'm guessing it's to prevent feedback from the cast's microphones, and to force us to listen more and laugh just a wee bit less. If we're endlessly guffawing the whole time, that might slow things up...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Also, we quickly realized we were in for a lot more comedy than the average listener hears. You may be used to hearing a joke or two between answers, but they edit that down from about five minutes of inter-question banter. Peter, Paula, Faith, the other Peter and Biz were on a roll. One somewhat sexist joke told by Peter Sagal drew hisses from many women in the audience, but the panel ran with it and spun it into comedy gold.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And yes, they really are improvising. Sagal told me after the show that except for the questions and a few scripted elements, the vast majority of \"Wait, Wait...\" is off-the-cuff.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The biggest surprise: Biz Stone himself. He didn't seem particularly interesting at first, but he soon warmed up, revealing some things about Twitter that many of us did not know. According to Stone:\u003c/p>\n\u003cul>\n\u003cli>He did not create the term \"tweet.\" The users coined that term. Originally a message on Twitter was called a \"twitter.\" And the verb was originally twittering\" before users started \"tweeting.\"\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>140 characters? That's because the international standard for text messages has a limit of 160 characters. Cutting tweets off at 140 ensures that one's entire message, plus the name of the user, can be seen in their entirety without having to \"Click For More.\"\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>Stone says he knew Twitter would work, despite disdain from everyone he knew, when he was at a tech conference in Texas. Some of the hardcore geeks who were trying the service out tweeted that they were assembling at a bar, and within minutes, it was packed.Soon after, the company was formed in San Francisco.\u003c/li>\n\u003c/ul>\n\u003cp>The show ended with a few \"pickups\": bits of dialogue that needed to be taped again for whatever reason (probably because we were laughing too hard in the background). How full-blown? Well, there are \u003cdel datetime=\"2011-07-14T21:46:10+00:00\">58,000\u003c/del> 62,000+ \u003ca href=\"http://www.facebook.com/netflix/posts/10150234431168870\">comments\u003c/a> on the Netflix Facebook page under the company's \u003ca href=\"http://blog.netflix.com/2011/07/netflix-introduces-new-plans-and.html\">announcement\u003c/a>, and very few of them say, \"I understand completely.\" (Though about 1,100 people did hit the \"Like\" button, perhaps those who will opt for the reduced-price for DVD-only or streaming-only.)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Forum host Michael Krasny asked Netflix VP of Corporate Communications Steve Swasey today to respond to all the criticism.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Why do you think all the angry outrage?\"\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">Netflix is not surprised by the response. How full-blown? Well, there are \u003cdel datetime=\"2011-07-14T21:46:10+00:00\">58,000\u003c/del> 62,000+ \u003ca href=\"http://www.facebook.com/netflix/posts/10150234431168870\">comments\u003c/a> on the Netflix Facebook page under the company's \u003ca href=\"http://blog.netflix.com/2011/07/netflix-introduces-new-plans-and.html\">announcement\u003c/a>, and very few of them say, \"I understand completely.\" (Though about 1,100 people did hit the \"Like\" button, perhaps those who will opt for the reduced-price for DVD-only or streaming-only.)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Forum host Michael Krasny asked Netflix VP of Corporate Communications Steve Swasey today to respond to all the criticism.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Why do you think all the angry outrage?\"\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">Netflix is not surprised by the response.
