"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

Hatteberg, Bradford, all those big names, all those great human-interest stories, it had me sucked in.\" \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"I'd like to comment on John Fisher,\" interrupted a guy with something very much on his mind. \"He should be ashamed of himself.\" Fisher is the A's co-owner, and the \u003ca href=\"http://www.ktvu.com/news/27109618/detail.html\">team wants to move to San Jose\u003c/a>. \"Keep the A's in Oakland,\" was my interviewee's message. \"If any city in America could use a baseball team, it's Oakland. Get over your ego. This is not about money.\" (Dude it is, I thought. My seat was sandwiched between two groups from L.A. The woman to my left worked for the lab that processed the movie print, and a trio of guys to my right discussed someone involved in the optioning of the book. \"She called him and said, 'can you explain Moneyball to me,'\" one of them recounted to mirthless insider laughter. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The on-stage introductions were next, in ascending order of star power: my ticket benefactor, the producer Rachael Horovitz, followed by Michael Lewis, Philip Seymour Hoffman, an extremely slimmed down Jonah Hill (still bankable now sans tummy?) and....\u003cem>Brad Pitt\u003c/em>! Waves of handsome swept over the audience. \"Hey, he's actually better-looking in person!\" I thought from my third-row seat. And it's true. He really is. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The film was good. Some funny stuff, and you really want those A's to win. The crowd ate it up, though the politics of the moment occasionally did intrude. Shouts of discontent about the possible A's exodus emerged seemingly at random from the dark. And when Billy Beane/Brad Pitt remarked on-screen that the A's stadium was a \"dump,\" someone loudly booed. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The lights went up to big applause. I turned around in my seat and who did I see just two rows behind me? The man himself: Billy Beane. He had been introduced pre-movie as someone who \"didn't want to be here.\" But honestly he looked as happy as, say, a November 2010 Brian Sabean. I thought about pointing at him and shouting, \"Hey Brad Pitt!\" but I didn't feel like a punch in the nose with a BART ride home ahead of me.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Plus I like Billy Beane. \u003cem>Moneyball\u003c/em> the concept is literally counter-intuitive. The book and film tell the tale of how the A's general manager, a failed baseball player despite can't-miss raves from the scouts, turns his own wrenching experience into a successful numbers-based approach to finding deficiencies in the baseball marketplace, thus allowing his low-payroll team to compete with the likes of the Yankees. But it's also counter-intuitive from a \u003cem>narrative\u003c/em> standpoint -- a story where the beancounters are the heroes and the go-with-your-guts guys -- the \"intangibles\" crowd -- are the benighted boobs. Plotwise, it's as if a flunked Jedi warrior shows up at Yoda's doorstep saying, \"the Force doesn't work, and I've got the stats to prove it.\" \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Would you -- do you -- root for that character? Another way of putting it: One might say that Billy Beane and his ilk are the people who brought you the romance of the spreadsheet. They're the guys who view the base-on-balls as a majestic act of rationality, rather than a missed opportunity to blast one 600 feet. \u003cem>Field of Dreams\u003c/em> becomes \u003cem>Field of Reams (of Data)\u003c/em>...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Some may never forgive him for that. This commission is controversial -- or is about to become so -- because of a 1977 video Otterness made in which he shot a dog to death. This happened in New York City, where I was a teenager at the time, and I can tell you it was a big deal.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But since then, Otterness has gone on to a successful career as a \u003ca href=\"http://www.tomostudio.com/index02.html\">sculptor\u003c/a>. From \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Otterness\">Wikipedia\u003c/a>: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Tom Otterness (b. 1952 in Wichita, Kansas) is an American sculptor whose works adorn parks, plazas, subway stations, libraries, courthouses and museums in New York---most notably in Rockefeller Park in Battery Park City[1] and in the 14th Street/8th Avenue subway station---and other cities around the world. He was the first artist ever to have contributed a balloon to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.[2] “…he made a giant Humpty Dumpty suspended in an upside-down tumble, as though he might have jumped from one of the swanky Central Park West rooftops…”[3]...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Known primarily as a public artist, Otterness has exhibited in popular exhibitions in locations across the United States and around the world, including New York City, Indianapolis, Beverly Hills, the Hague, Munich, Paris, Valencia and Venice. His studio is located in the Gowanus neighborhood in Brooklyn.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp> \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But a lot of people haven't forgotten the canine snuff film. Here's the art critic Gary Indiana in New York magazine in 2005 \u003ca href=\"http://nymag.com/nymetro/arts/features/10557/\">\u003cstrong>recounting his years as a critic for the Village Voice covering the East Village art scene\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>.\" Writing about a show focusing on early 80s work in the neighborhood, he writes:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>...I’m repulsed by this show’s inclusion of Tom Otterness, a sculptor of limitless nonentity despite his demonstrated skill at conning public-art commissions and taste-impaired collectors into making him rich. Mr. Otterness, once upon a time, adopted a dog and then shot it to death for the fun of recording his infantile, sadistic depravity on film. I’d like the New Museum’s visitors to keep that in mind while looking at this creep’s work. Mr. Otterness isn’t one of those special exceptions deserving the adage “Lousy person, terrific artist.” Lousy both.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>In 2008, the dog shooting became an issue when Otterness created a public sculpture in Brooklyn. The \u003ca href=\"http://www.brooklyneagle.com/categories/category.php?category_id=27&id=19895\">Brooklyn Daily Eagle contacted him\u003c/a> to talk about the controversy, prompting him to send an apology:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>The Brooklyn Eagle contacted the artist’s studio about the issue Monday, and received the following response via email:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Thirty years ago when I was 25 years old, I made a film in which I shot a dog. Here's the art critic Gary Indiana in New York magazine in 2005 \u003ca href=\"http://nymag.com/nymetro/arts/features/10557/\">\u003cstrong>recounting his years as a critic for the Village Voice covering the East Village art scene\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>.\" Writing about a show focusing on early 80s work in the neighborhood, he writes:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>...I’m repulsed by this show’s inclusion of Tom Otterness, a sculptor of limitless nonentity despite his demonstrated skill at conning public-art commissions and taste-impaired collectors into making him rich. Mr. Otterness, once upon a time, adopted a dog and then shot it to death for the fun of recording his infantile, sadistic depravity on film. I’d like the New Museum’s visitors to keep that in mind while looking at this creep’s work. Mr. Otterness isn’t one of those special exceptions deserving the adage “Lousy person, terrific artist.” Lousy both.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>In 2008, the dog shooting became an issue when Otterness created a public sculpture in Brooklyn. Sixty thousand pounds of bronze will go into the creation of \"\u003ca href=\"http://www.remember-them.org/\">Remember Them\u003c/a>,\" a four-piece sculpture that will eventually depict 25 historical figures, including FDR, Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X, Oskar Schindler, Susan B. Anthony, Cesar Chavez, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Maya Angelou. Chiodo plans to finish the sculpture next year, if the Oakland Chamber of Commerce, which is footing the bill, can raise the $2 million still needed.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The sculpture is 52 feet wide and 21 feet high, covering 1,000 square feet. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>Update 11:10 a.m.\u003c/em> Our reporter at the scene, Caitlin Esch, says conflicting press releases have muddled some of the reporting on this. In addition to the 14 internationally known figures now represented, eight local luminaries are also depicted.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The fourth sculpture, still being worked on, will add 11 international figures and six more locals. Anthony, Cesar Chavez, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Maya Angelou. Chiodo plans to finish the sculpture next year, if the Oakland Chamber of Commerce, which is footing the bill, can raise the $2 million still needed.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The sculpture is 52 feet wide and 21 feet high, covering 1,000 square feet. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>Update 11:10 a.m.\u003c/em> Our reporter at the scene, Caitlin Esch, says conflicting press releases have muddled some of the reporting on this. In addition to the 14 internationally known figures now represented, eight local luminaries are also depicted.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The fourth sculpture, still being worked on, will add 11 international figures and six more locals. The cable network Starz said today it won't renew a deal, expiring at the end of Feb, 2012, which gives Netflix customers streaming access to newly released films from the Sony and Disney catalogues. Starz is a pay cable network that owns the TV and online rights to those studios' movies. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>From the \u003ca href=\"http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=nflx&ql=1\">LA Times\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Premium cable network Starz Entertainment will end its deal to provide movies to Netflix, a surprise decision that will deprive the popular online video service of its most valuable source of recently released movies...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Starz, which controls pay-cable rights to movies from Walt Disney Studios and Sony Pictures, signed its current agreement with Netflix in 2008. At that time, online video was watched by only a small number of tech-savvy young people and the estimated $30 million per year the cable network received was seen as new revenue that would have little impact on its traditional television business...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The only other recently released movies Netflix gets for its streaming service come from Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer via cable channel Epix. But if the relationship does end up severed, he said, \"with Sony and Disney removed from the mix, one has to wonder if there wont' be some issues for the customers of Netflix at seeing what could be important titles from those studios not being available to them. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"But we're going to see more [developments] like this as these online services are having to battle with a lot of the incumbents over licensing and content rights.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>McGuire said some of the immediate drop in Netflix shares today may be due to programmed trades, \"where people were saying if the Starz things go this way or that way, sell.
