"content": "\u003cp>A judge delayed sentencing today for the two men convicted earlier this year of murdering Oakland journalist Chauncey Bailey. After a hearing on questions that have arisen about the prosecution's chief witness in the case, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Thomas Reardon set Aug. 26 as the sentencing date for Yusuf Bey IV, the former leader of Oakland's Your Black Muslim Bakery, and an associate, Antoine Mackey.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The admitted gunman in the Bailey slaying, Devaughndre Broussard, was the main prosecution witness against Bey and Mackey. He agreed to testify in a deal that allowed him to plead guilty to two counts of voluntary manslaughter in Bailey's killing and the fatal shooting of a second man. Broussard testified that he carried out both those 2007 slayings the order of Bey IV and that Mackey was the get-away driver in the Bailey killing. Bey IV was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder; Mackey was found guilty on two first-degree counts for killing Bailey and yet another man--again at Bey's direction.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>To conclude the plea deal, Reardon today sentenced Broussard to 25 years in state prison.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The sentencing delay for Bey and Mackey stemmed from a defense motion asking Judge Reardon to investigate the possibility that Broussard lied on the stand. After a hearing on questions that have arisen about the prosecution's chief witness in the case, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Thomas Reardon set Aug. 26 as the sentencing date for Yusuf Bey IV, the former leader of Oakland's Your Black Muslim Bakery, and an associate, Antoine Mackey.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The admitted gunman in the Bailey slaying, Devaughndre Broussard, was the main prosecution witness against Bey and Mackey. He agreed to testify in a deal that allowed him to plead guilty to two counts of voluntary manslaughter in Bailey's killing and the fatal shooting of a second man. Broussard testified that he carried out both those 2007 slayings the order of Bey IV and that Mackey was the get-away driver in the Bailey killing. Bey IV was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder; Mackey was found guilty on two first-degree counts for killing Bailey and yet another man--again at Bey's direction.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>To conclude the plea deal, Reardon today sentenced Broussard to 25 years in state prison.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The sentencing delay for Bey and Mackey stemmed from a defense motion asking Judge Reardon to investigate the possibility that Broussard lied on the stand. "content": "\u003cp>Crews have been working all night at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and are by now deep into the intensive process of converting the home of the Raiders… into the home of the A’s. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Raiders kicked off their preseason last night, and the A’s play this evening, which is creating an unusually tight turnaround.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This morning, KQED producer Molly Samuel spoke with Ron Little, the Interim General Manager for the O.co Coliseum and the Oracle Arena. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“This is probably the tightest we’ve ever had to go,” he said. “We don’t like doing it,” he said. “Anything that gets in the way of progress could cause a delay, and that’s something that would not be good.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Little said it’s only once every couple of years that the crew needs to flip the space from football-ready to baseball-ready (or vice versa) within 24 hours. He said he expects to complete today’s conversion in just 16 hours.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We have to take possession of the field immediately after the game. That’s really important for us,” he said. “Then we immediately get to work.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Between 50 and 100 people have been working since around 10 p.m. last night when the Raiders left the field. This is a 33 percent jump for the region since last month.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Statewide, the foreclosure activity rate is one out of every 239 housing units, marking a 4 percent increase for California since last month, but a 16 percent decrease compared with July 2010.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Nationally, the rate of foreclosure has decreased 4 percent since June and 35 percent since last year.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But RealtyTrac’s Daren Blomquist told KQED intern Nick Fountain that the decrease in foreclosure activity is not necessarily as good as it seems.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We have to say that there’s no marked improvement in the economy or the jobs market or the housing market that is causing this improvement in the foreclosure picture,” he said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Blomquist said the national decline, which has been going on for 10 months, is primarily due to a slow down in processing of foreclosures as a result of of the “havoc” created last October when lenders “got into hot water using slopping paperwork and documentation.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“So, at this point, the decline is more of a short-term fix,” he said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Locally, San Francisco County showed a 39 percent increase in foreclosure activity since June, which Blomquist attributed to a jump in bank repossessions. Similarly, activity this month in Contra Costa County increased 17 percent and Alameda County 15 percent.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But several regions outside the Bay Area are faring far worse. While the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont metro area ranks 28th nationally in foreclosure rates and Vallejo-Fairfield ranks fourth, the Stockton area ranks second.
