The map offers various scenic and historical locations that honor the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Ki sat down over the summer to talk about the joys and challenges of her job as well as the future of \u003cem>MindShift\u003c/em>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Where did you work before KQED?\u003cbr>\n\u003c/strong>I was at NPR West [in Culver City, CA] working as a digital news trainer.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>What does that mean?\u003cbr>\n\u003c/strong>That means I helped NPR member stations, including KQED, learn the skills needed to create content for a growing digital audience, including writing, photography, aggregation, content strategy and organizational issues.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>What drew you to KQED?\u003cbr>\n\u003c/strong>\u003cem>Mindshift\u003c/em> drew me to KQED. The content, the stories and the insights are outstanding and always thought provoking. Before Tina Barseghian, the founding editor, left, I had been pitching her ideas and strategizing about content. That said, we put a lot of thought, care and intentionality into each post and it shows in our audience growth.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>What do you like about your job?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nI mostly interact with readers online, but some of the major professional development conferences happen in the summer, so recently I’ve been traveling across the country, meeting readers face-to-face. Hearing firsthand how people are actually using our coverage is really inspiring.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I’ve heard about teachers who hotly debated a \u003cem>MindShift\u003c/em> article in their latest staff meeting. I just heard from a superintendent who emails \u003cem>MindShift\u003c/em> stories to her educators because she wants them to be aware of the issues that we’re covering. To know that teachers are finding \u003cem>MindShift\u003c/em> useful is really satisfying. We're doing our jobs.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>What are some things you're excited about?\u003cbr>\n\u003c/strong>We really want to create events to bring educators together. I think they do a great job finding each other on social media, but we’re looking to take it to the next level, whether that’s in-person networking events or a new social media community. You can also look forward to a podcast, naturally.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>My last question is distinctly \u003cem>not\u003c/em> work related. Do you have a guilty pleasure?\u003cbr>\n\u003c/strong>This is the one question I prepared the most for. Why is that a guilty pleasure?\u003cbr>\n\u003c/strong>Because it seems antithetical to yoga. Right? There's really loud music. It almost feels like you’re in a club. It has a reputation for leading the conversation in the industry. Now I get a chance to help to expand KQED's public media resume, which means continuing to think outside the box and try new things that help the station connect with current and new audiences.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Is there a particular issue that you are passionate about covering? \u003c/strong>I'm passionate about education. Prior to journalism, I was preparing to teach high school English. Human development, especially in the earlier years, is what shapes our community later. And schools are where many families connect with services and where many families turn for help.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>You and Sandhya have been described as an enterprise team focusing on equity issues in Oakland. Can you explain what that means?\u003cbr>\n\u003c/strong>An enterprise reporter has traditionally been one who researches, pitches and reports original stories. An enterprising team uses this same process but works in tandem to cover significant issues.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>We’re trying to take the traditional idea of enterprise reporting and make our stories go further. This can mean more community conversations, project-based reporting or just spending time with one particular story. The ideas are only limited by our imaginations.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>By focusing on equity issues, we commit to reporting stories on people and places that are either underserved, underrepresented or given disproportionate attention, but are critically important to a neighborhood, city or region.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I’d like to connect the dots between investment in early childhood education and quality-of-life indicators later in life — where that’s happening and not happening in Oakland. Another important topic is displacement. As housing prices continue to rise and changing demographics are altering what the city looks like, who is moving where and why?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Why is covering the East Bay important to you?\u003cbr>\n\u003c/strong>Quality reporting of East Bay issues is lacking. Oakland and the East Bay are changing so much right now, yet many of its new residents, myself included, don't know much about its rich history. It speaks to the tension caused by a shortage of housing, the passion that residents have for their growing city and the challenges facing the city.
