San Mateo County, Measure U

Should San Mateo County create an independent commission to redraw its county supervisorial districts after each federal census?

Measure U would establish an independent redistricting commission to draw and adopt the boundaries for each of San Mateo County’s five supervisorial districts every 10 years, following each federal census. The commission would replace the county’s current process, in which the Board of Supervisors adopts the ordinance that sets district boundaries based on the recommendation of a 15-member advisory panel. Passes with a majority vote.

Yes Argument

Giving the Board of Supervisors final authority over district boundaries creates an inherent conflict of interest, since members are not prohibited by law from drawing districts that favor their own reelection. Establishing a commission that is responsible for drawing and adopting supervisorial districts independently would reduce that conflict while increasing transparency and public trust and encouraging broader and more inclusive public participation.
