The first things you see up by the cash registers are the things we tend to buy. Though we didn’t get rid of the junk food, we've moved it moved back.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>She says the county focuses on neighborhoods with the highest health disparities levels, such as East Palo Alto and North Fair Oaks, an unincorporated part of Redwood City. The study found what researchers call a “linear association” between certain components of air pollution and asthma ER visits. In other words, as air pollution goes up, the likelihood of an asthmatic child heading to the ER goes up, too.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The San Joaquin Valley has some of the dirtiest air in the country and high rates of childhood asthma.\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">As air pollution goes up, the likelihood of an asthmatic child heading to the ER goes up, too.\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp> The culprits are two components of air pollution: \u003ca title=\"http://www.epa.gov/glo/\" href=\"http://www.epa.gov/glo/\" target=\"_blank\">ground-level ozone\u003c/a> and \u003ca title=\"http://www.epa.gov/pm/\" href=\"http://www.epa.gov/pm/\" target=\"_blank\">particulate matter\u003c/a>. Ground-level ozone can have corrosive effects on the lungs, decreasing lung function. Particulate matter are tiny particles, like soot. The simple act of breathing carries these particles deep into the lungs where they stick and can cause breathing and heart problems.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Adults are at risk as well. But for them, the risk is heart attack. More particulate matter in the air means more people are going to have heart attacks on that day.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Air quality activists say that local regulators are not doing a good job alerting the public when the air quality is dangerous. Pollution alerts come from newspapers, local TV and even school districts, which post flags depending on ranging from green, for healthy air to purple, very unhealthy. But, Khokha reports, “All these sources are predictions of averages for air quality on a given day. They don’t take into account the way conditions change throughout the day.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And conditions can vary drastically. This chart shows the air quality variation on a single day. If an air quality prediction is made at this time, for the entire day, it will soon be wrong. By noon, air quality was deteriorating. By 2pm, a time when many children are getting out of school, the air quality had declined to \"unhealthy for all.\" By 4pm, a time when many children are participating in after school sports and more likely to be outdoors, the air quality was bumping into the “very unhealthy” zone.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So what to do? The easiest recommendation is for asthmatic children to stay indoors. But staying indoors means children are more sedentary. A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of obesity, an even bigger public health menace than asthma.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Instead, Tim Tyner, co-author of the study, has solid recommendations for asthmatic children and outdoor play. First, children with asthma are usually prescribed two kinds of medication: controller and rescue. Controller medications should be taken daily, to manage their asthma and prevent symptoms from occurring. So, what’s that got to do with climate change? Plenty.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“There’s a division in the public’s mind between global warming and health effects of pollution,” says Dimitri Stanich of the California Air Resources Board.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In reality, there’s significant overlap. Some components of air pollution shown to have harmful warming effects on the planet are also harming people, especially children, right now.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Let’s start with \u003ca title=\"EPA - explainer\" href=\"http://www.epa.gov/glo/\">ground-level ozone\u003c/a>. Ground-level ozone is different from the \u003ca title=\"NOAA - ozone layer\" href=\"http://www.oar.noaa.gov/climate/t_ozonelayer.html\">ozone \u003cem>layer\u003c/em>\u003c/a>, which lies about 15 miles above the earth (not exactly ground level). The ozone layer shields us from most of the sun’s harmful rays. Ozone is good in the atmosphere but bad, in many ways, at or near ground level.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-family: Calibri,Verdana,Helvetica,Arial\">\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">Some components of air pollution shown to have harmful warming effects on the planet are also harming people right now.\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp> Ground-level ozone is not part of air pollution itself. Instead, it is formed by a complex chemical reaction starting with the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) component of air pollution. That chemical reaction is especially strong when the air is calm and the sun is shining (California’s Central Valley in the summer, anyone?). This stuff is terrible for your lungs.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->“Ozone has the same corrosive aspects of bleach,” explains Bonnie Holmes-Gen, senior policy director for the American Lung Association in California. “When people breathe it in, it damages the lining of the lungs. It’s like getting a sunburn on the lungs. It triggers coughing, wheezing and asthma attacks.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Ground-level ozone is also a greenhouse gas. So, while it’s harming people today, it’s simultaneously helping to warm the planet. If that’s not enough, ground-level ozone’s corrosive properties harm crops, too. The Central Valley may be the nation’s salad bowl, but it’s ground zero for ground-level ozone.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Then there’s “\u003ca title=\"Pew - fact sheet\" href=\"http://www.pewclimate.org/global-warming-basics/blackcarbon-factsheet\">black carbon\u003c/a>.” If you think that sounds ominous, you’re right.Tiny particles of black carbon can lodge deep in a person’s lungs (bad) or circulate in the air and contribute to global warming (also bad). And, in a triple whammy, if black carbon particles land on arctic snow, they can accelerate the ice melt. Scientists say black carbon is a \u003ca title=\"Time - story\" href=\"http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1938379,00.html\">major contributor to climate change\u003c/a>, perhaps second only to CO2. Black carbon comes from, among other things, the burning of fossil fuels, the stuff that comes from tail pipes and smokestacks.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Sunday’s \u003cem>New York Times\u003c/em> featured a depressingly detailed account of Americans’ waning interest in global warming. Climate skepticism is on the rise, at least in political circles. While skepticism about the health effects of air pollution isn’t polled as much, it seems reasonable to think there’s little argument there.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This is where we get to what policymakers call “co-benefits.” Ms. Holmes-Gen points out that ground level ozone and black carbon are both fairly short-lived in the environment. “It’s a huge bang for the buck. If we reduce air pollution, we’ll see an immediate health benefit and we get warming pollutants out of the air, too.”\u003c/p>\n\n",

Ground-level ozone is different from the \u003ca title=\"NOAA - ozone layer\" href=\"http://www.oar.noaa.gov/climate/t_ozonelayer.html\">ozone \u003cem>layer\u003c/em>\u003c/a>, which lies about 15 miles above the earth (not exactly ground level). The ozone layer shields us from most of the sun’s harmful rays. Ozone is good in the atmosphere but bad, in many ways, at or near ground level.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

Instead, it is formed by a complex chemical reaction starting with the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) component of air pollution. That chemical reaction is especially strong when the air is calm and the sun is shining (California’s Central Valley in the summer, anyone?). This stuff is terrible for your lungs.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->“Ozone has the same corrosive aspects of bleach,” explains Bonnie Holmes-Gen, senior policy director for the American Lung Association in California. “When people breathe it in, it damages the lining of the lungs. It’s like getting a sunburn on the lungs. It triggers coughing, wheezing and asthma attacks.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Ground-level ozone is also a greenhouse gas. So, while it’s harming people today, it’s simultaneously helping to warm the planet. If that’s not enough, ground-level ozone’s corrosive properties harm crops, too. The Central Valley may be the nation’s salad bowl, but it’s ground zero for ground-level ozone.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Then there’s “\u003ca title=\"Pew - fact sheet\" href=\"http://www.pewclimate.org/global-warming-basics/blackcarbon-factsheet\">black carbon\u003c/a>.” If you think that sounds ominous, you’re right.Tiny particles of black carbon can lodge deep in a person’s lungs (bad) or circulate in the air and contribute to global warming (also bad). And, in a triple whammy, if black carbon particles land on arctic snow, they can accelerate the ice melt. Scientists say black carbon is a \u003ca title=\"Time - story\" href=\"http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1938379,00.html\">major contributor to climate change\u003c/a>, perhaps second only to CO2. Black carbon comes from, among other things, the burning of fossil fuels, the stuff that comes from tail pipes and smokestacks.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Sunday’s \u003cem>New York Times\u003c/em> featured a depressingly detailed account of Americans’ waning interest in global warming. Climate skepticism is on the rise, at least in political circles. While skepticism about the health effects of air pollution isn’t polled as much, it seems reasonable to think there’s little argument there.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This is where we get to what policymakers call “co-benefits.” Ms. Holmes-Gen points out that ground level ozone and black carbon are both fairly short-lived in the environment. “It’s a huge bang for the buck. If we reduce air pollution, we’ll see an immediate health benefit and we get warming pollutants out of the air, too.”\u003c/p>\n\n\u003c/div>\u003c/p>",
