It mysteriously appeared on my desk a few months ago; someone who still is anonymous thought I should read it. I remember my friends singing it praises a year ago and now I can see why. It also cleared up a confusion I had about some weight loss in England. When I was twenty-two, I lived in England for a year. I only changed one thing in my diet when I went abroad; I ate multi-grain bread instead of white. Yet I dropped two dress sizes all the while enjoying pints and chips covered in malt vinegar and wrapped in newspaper. Until this day, it was always a mystery to me how I could have lost weight on English fare.

But American fare and our way of eating is much more insidious. Corn is in everything manufactured. I didn’t believe this assertion in Omnivore’s Dilemma until I started reading labels. It’s in pasta, soda, yogurt and even ketchup. Surplus corn is synthesized into a variety of ingredients; for example high fructose corn syrup sweetens almost every soda and corn is synthesized into emulsifiers found in an assortment of frozen foods. We also do not have a culture of food, like the English, French, or Greeks. In England, Sunday constituted a big Sunday dinner. Either my flat mate or myself would cook and we would cook for about twenty friends. It was social, leisurely and incredibly enjoyable. Looking back on the year, we didn’t eat out very often. There were many shared dinners and meals were hardly ever rushed. I found it odd at the time but every meal and social engagement included some sort of tea. Even stranger, eggs and milk were left in the cupboard rather than fridge and people shopped on a daily rather than weekly basis. Canned and processed food did not list undistinguishable ingredients. I was tickled to find out that chocolate contained cacao, sugar and cream rather than the incomprehensible list of things found in Hershey bar.

It seemed the reason I lost weight in England was lack of highly processed corn in my diet. Since the weight came back fairly readily when I returned, it seemed the most obvious culprit. It wasn’t just Omnivore’s Dilemma that has educated me and made me a fan of European food and eating habits. Reading Superfoods has made me familiar with fourteen foods that can boost health. Watching the documentaries, Food Inc. and Obesity in America cemented in my mind that food doesn’t fit neatly into an industrialized or global definition. It is best when local. I have seen family members get diagnosed with diabetes and cancer; these ailments have always been coupled red flags in their food choices. I have also gone back to reading Andrew Weil and agreeing with him about his caveat that health is intimately linked to nutrition. My first time heralding this claim was when I changed my food in college. I was diagnosed with ADD at sixteen. In college, I went off meds and cut out simple sugars and carbohydrates in my diet. My ADD actually improved dramatically with the dietary change.

So my food has changed once again in response to my research on the normal American diet. I started shopping at farmer’s markets rather than Safeway. I buy fruits and vegetables in season that are locally grown. I look at ingredients, if there is more than five I put it back on the shelf. I look for meat and eggs that haven’t come off an assembly line or are corn fed but rather comes from a local farm. What’s so funny is when I was in England, this is exactly how I shopped but I didn’t know it at the time. In America, it has taken several documentaries, books and expert nutritional advice to help me choose food healthy enough to enjoy. But the experience has opened me up to a world of taste and enjoyment that was seriously lacking in the processed food I used to eat.

[ad fullwidth]

37.7699 -122.467174

",

We were all set, armed with a film permit which I had spent nearly a week to secure and which we needed to film the progress cal trans was making on a new, seismically sound eastern span.

But then I turned on the evening news and heard that the Bay Bridge was closed. No, it wasn’t an earthquake that was the culprit but a repair made to an eyebar over Labor Day, which now had failed, sending thousands of pounds of steel crashing down into the westbound lanes east of Yerba Buena Island. I quickly dialed the California Department of Transportation (Cal Trans) press office. They confirmed what I feared – that our shoot was indefinitely postponed, pending the necessary fixes on the bridge.

But it was too late for us to cancel the crew. The shoot had to take place. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that you have to be nimble and resourceful when your story takes you in interesting, unanticipated directions – like today.

The next morning, Producer Jon Fromer and I, along with our production crew, got into our van and headed south of market street, searching for a way to get onto the bridge. We showed our media credentials to a San Francisco police officer stationed at a roadblock. He told us we could enter the bridge from an on-ramp off of 2nd Street. One lane was left open for motorists to get to Treasure Island.

[ad fullwidth]

Here’s a photo of our cameraman filming the bridge, looking northeast from Treasure Island at the construction on the new eastern span. We decided to head to the Cal Trans public information office in Oakland, where we could check on the status of the repair work. But first we’d have to find a way to get across the bay.

Luckily for us, we found a sympathetic chp officer at the road block on Yerba Buena Island. He escorted us on a surreal trip across the bridge, eerily quiet of the rumble of passing cars.

A press conference was being convened at the Cal Trans public affairs office to explain their repair strategy and field questions from the reporters. Though no mention is made of when the bridge will re-open, Cal Trans has just agreed to allow media organizations onto the bridge to document some of the repair work taking place right now.

Finally, what we’ve been waiting all day for – a chance to get onto the bridge and see the damage up close. We take our place in the convoy of news vans and head west onto the upper deck of the bay bridge. PV panels take the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity. The sun’s energy is abundant, but in order for solar electricity to compete with cheaper forms of electricity, such as that produced from highly polluting coal-fired power plants, PV panels have to be more efficient. And they need to be cheaper. Higher efficiency gets you more power for the same area, which saves on costs. But higher efficiency means more expensive PV modules.

The efficiency of PV panels is measured by the percentage of sun energy falling on the panel that is converted to electricity. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), commercial PV panels today range in conversion efficiency from about 7% to 17%. Compare that to the efficiency of a typical fossil fuel power plant that has a conversion efficiency of about 30%. That means that about 30% of the energy in coal or natural gas gets converted to electricity. The rest is wasted as heat as the fuel is burned to create steam, which is used to turn a turbine, and it is wasted in the cooling tower where the steam condenses back to liquid water. There is some loss of energy, called transmission losses, as the electricity goes from the power plant to your house. With PV cells, the transmission losses are close to zero, since the electricity doesn’t have far to travel. On the other hand, the inverter required to convert the DC from the cells to AC to connect to the grid does cause some loss.

Typical PV cells are made from crystalline silicon or other semi-conductor materials. One advance in the technology is the creation of thin film PV cells made of the same, or similar materials. These cells use less material than crystalline silicon cells, and so are cheaper to make, and they are more flexible—some are made to act like roofing shingles, only they produce electricity as well as keep you out of the weather at home. But thin film PV is generally less efficient at converting sunlight to electricity compared to the more expensive crystalline silicon PV cells.

Another advance in the technology is layering materials that convert different parts of the spectrum of light into electricity. NREL has made some cells that are more than 30% efficient, but they're very expensive—maybe suitable for use in space where size and weight are critical.
Scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) are trying to develop materials that are abundant and also suitable for affordable large-scale use in PV cells. The scientists are currently doing research with bismuth ferrite, a ceramic material that is both ferroelectric and ferromagnetic, and which has some interesting photovoltaic properties that operate on the nanoscale. At various stages of its existence, the island has run on coal, wood, bunker oil, and now diesel fuel, all ferried from the mainland. At one point, in the early 20th century, the boats got a brief respite when workers lay cables under the bay to connect Alcatraz to the mainland grid. That experiment ended when boats snagged the cables, leaving Alcatraz once again in the dark.

When the Obama Administration announced $750 million dollars in stimulus funds for the National Parks System, Park officials glimpsed a rare opportunity to solve (or at least mitigate) this problem once and for all. (That's less than half the estimate, by the way, that engineers gave for digging trenches under the Bay to once again lay cables connecting Alcatraz to PG&E lines.) So, staff here not only bring their dirty dishes home to wash at the end of the day, they've built a rainwater catchment system to irrigate the gardens.

Getting power to Alcatraz is its own special conundrum.

The new solar panels on the island are expected to cost somewhere between $5-10 million, and will be installed in late summer. (That's less than half the estimate, by the way, that engineers gave for digging trenches under the Bay to once again lay cables connecting Alcatraz to PG&E lines.) Once it's up and running in Summer 2011, the system will supply more than half the island's electricity needs.

",
