Here's where the science gets squishy.

In the lawsuit, the farmers and water users argue that stripers do have a population level effect.
They want to see fishing regulations on stripers lifted as a means to bring back endangered fish. But some biologists claim there's not enough research to show a population level impact. UC Davis fish biologist Peter Moyle says the best estimate done, involving a winter run chinook salmon, showed a 9 percent loss to stripers, which he says is “not a big number.” That was a National Marine Fisheries study. Remove the stripers, he says, and you could actually be upsetting a balance in the ecosystem. And I was calmed by silky water reflections of trees along the riverbank as I watched the morning sun rise behind them. (I know, it’s the earth turning and not the sun going up and down.) My mother wove baskets from reeds that grew along the riverbed, as Native tribes have done for more than a thousand years. There’s peace of mind in the sounds and beauty of the water rushing over the rocks. And as I sat on a porch chair in Firebaugh gazing at the San Joaquin River flowing peacefully by, I thought about the history and meaning that rivers have for people everywhere. Rivers are the veins of the planet, a source of life and connection to the world. I thought about Huck Finn and relived playing my guitar on the banks of the Mississippi in Missouri (Hannibal) when I was 18, hitchhiking around the country with my best friend. I played and sang “Lazy River,” “Moon River,” and “Deep River” while my high school buddy played harmonica. The unstoppable river rolled past as we paid tribute with “Down by the riverside, I’m gonna lay my burden down,” “Wade in the water,” and “Jordan River is chilly and cold. Chills the body, but not the soul.” (“Proud Mary” hadn’t yet been written or it would’ve been part of our river repertoire back in 1964… And I’m sure we would have let wailed a soulful “Many Rivers to Cross”, but Sam Cooke’s “Change is Gonna Come” wasn’t released until ’65.)

Sorry to digress. Unlike the proud rivers in stories and songs, the San Joaquin is a mighty river that’s been brought to its knees, and drained of its life blood. But what gives this story the stuff legends and ballads are made of is that, after a long battle for its survival, this once great river has a chance to regain much of the power of its past, and to bring back a bounty of wildlife that once thrived in its cool currents and along hundreds of miles of riverbank. Because of this historic restoration project, the San Joaquin is becoming a living river again. It’s a big job and a big deal. It’s not every day we can say we brought something back to life! The study of ants is called “myrmecology” so perhaps we could be considered “myrmecophiles”. Whatever it’s called, we can’t get enough of them. Ever since a story meeting with the California Academy of Sciences in November 2009 when they told us about their “amazing” ant researcher, Brian Fisher and the work he’s doing locally as well as in Madagascar with ants, we’ve been smitten with the Family Formicidae.

Since that Cal Academy meeting, QUEST has created six distinct ant-related pieces of content. Lauren Sommer decided to do a radio report right away. I distinctly remember the excitement on her face when she came back from her first meeting with Brian Fisher. She stopped at my desk and said, “…you guys HAVE to do this story! The ants are SO AMAZING!” She especially liked their “little faces”. I have to admit, up to that point, I hadn’t really thought of ants as having faces. You need only check out Ant Web to see that not only do they have faces and hairdos, the world’s ant species have incredible morphological diversity.

Lauren produced a great radio report, “Bay Area Ant Invasion” about the invasive Argentine Ant “super-colony” in California that has pushed out most of the native ant species here. Wilson, on the off chance that he might be in the Bay Area during the time when we were shooting. To our delight, his answer was ‘yes’ and although we were not ultimately able to time it for inclusion in the QUEST segment, I was able to shoot an produce an interview segment with him for the KQED TV series, This Week in Northern California, in which he talks with me about his lifelong fascination with ants, his new novel, “Anthill” and what we can all do to save the natural world.

[ad fullwidth]

Finally, Lindsay Kelliher produced a short but sweet TV segment with E.O. Wilson called “Why I Do Science” that focuses on how he first started studying ants. Look for that in QUEST episode 412 which airs on August 24th, 2010. I also want to mention the very first piece of ant content from QUEST Education Supervisor, Jessica Neely. Back in January 2008, she took a group of science teachers out ant pooting as part of our QUEST Science Education Institute. Check out her blog post called, “Never Used a Pooter?”

So, what is it about ants that warrant all this QUEST attention? As Brian Fisher points out, we depend on ants for the health of terrestrial ecosystems. They are key players in the recycling of organic matter and without them, most ecosystems would collapse. But also, ants are just plain weird. They communicate with chemicals, live in complex social systems and do things like farming, herding and slave-making. And did you know that all of the ants in a colony are female? Yep. The males are bred up and live only long enough to mate and die.

Obviously, I could go on. But also, ants are just plain weird. They communicate with chemicals, live in complex social systems and do things like farming, herding and slave-making. And did you know that all of the ants in a colony are female? Yep. The males are bred up and live only long enough to mate and die.

Obviously, I could go on. But I’ll restrain myself and let you peruse all the amazing ant materials that QUEST has created and compiled in the last few months and let you explore for yourself the wonderful world of ants.

",

When it's all said and done, it will have spanned more than a decade, involving dozens of public meetings and hundreds of stakeholders. The result will be one of the most robust conservation networks in the world, stretching across 1,100 miles of coastline.

Right now, two regions of the California coast have marine protected areas (MPAs) in place - the Central Coast and the North Central Coast, which spans from Mendocino to the top of Santa Barbara County. "Marine protected area" is catch-all phrase for the different kinds of reserves that are set up in this process. Some are strictly "no-take" zones where fishing isn't allowed. Others are recreational areas where fishing is limited. In all, about 350 square miles have been protected, or about 18% of the state waters in these study areas. (Here's a QUEST TV story we did just after the first MPAs were created). The two remaining sections of the coast are at the very northern and southern ends of the state. Each has its own challenges (check out this California Report story about the north coast region for more on that.)

The first group of MPAs went into effect three years ago, but in May, 21 new MPAs went into effect off the coast of San Francisco. As part of this story, I spoke with the game wardens at the California Department of Fish and Game. They're on the frontlines of patrolling and enforcing these new reserves. The California budget crisis has certainly had a impact on the department. California has the lowest number of wardens per capita in the nation. The ones patrolling the MPAs are responsible for both other coastal regulations and several counties inland. However, public-private partnerships are playing a big role. Foundations and non-profits stepping in to help out and fund some of the monitoring activities.

One of the big questions yet to be answered is whether the MPAs are having in impact on the marine life they're designed to protect. Mark Carr, a UC Santa Cruz professor, said it will be a few more years before their surveys show results. Unlike some tropical marine ecosystems, the ones off the California coast are slow-growing. If they are successful, Carr says the results could be seen both in and outside the MPAs. The goal is to see bigger fish and more fish all over the coast.

[ad fullwidth]

Listen to the Protecting Marine Reserves radio report online.

36.96554 -122.00112

",
