So A&E is airing a special tonight. "Shining A Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in America," which you can watch at 8 p.m. on the aforementioned cable network, will raise money for United Way Worldwide.
Now, I have a few questions about the lineup of musicians and other celebrities that organizers apparently thought were the best possible choices for discussing race in America. John Legend and Jill Scott? Sure. Smokey Robinson, definitely. Sting? I think I can live without that.
There is no question, on the other hand, about my feelings for Nicki Minaj reciting "Still I Rise," perhaps the most famous poem by the late great Dr. Maya Angelou. I feel exactly like the people whooping when Nicki says the line about diamonds at the meeting of her thighs.
