Aditi Ranjan shares why she feels cybersecurity is important.
Receiving scam calls and fake messages has become quite common for me nowadays. Usually, it’s an unknown person asking for my information, my money or trying to convince me to click some random, suspicious link. Whenever I receive one, I generally recognize the warning signs pretty quickly.
I’ll look at the strange email address, suspicious wording or a link that doesn’t quite look right, delete the message, and move on with my day. But eventually, I started wondering: what if those warning signs aren’t obvious to everyone? Because as technology becomes more advanced, scams are also becoming more complex, making it harder for people to recognize what they can actually trust.
The more I learned about cybersecurity, the more I realized that staying safe online is not simply about being careful. It is about knowing what to be careful of. A message can look completely legitimate to someone who has never been taught how to recognize a phishing attempt. And unlike a physical threat, there isn’t always something tangible telling us that we are in danger. That realization changed how I viewed cybersecurity.
I used to think of it mainly as a technological problem: building stronger systems and developing better security tools. But technology can only go so far if the person using it doesn’t know what they are looking at. Not everyone spends their time examining a suspicious link like it’s a crime scene. And honestly, they shouldn’t have to.
People shouldn’t need to become cybersecurity experts just to know whether they can trust a message sitting in their inbox. That’s why I now believe protecting people online requires protecting them through knowledge too. I believe in educating our communities so people can recognize threats, make informed decisions and take action before something happens. Ultimately, I think staying digitally secure and aware is part of being a responsible individual and a responsible citizen. With a Perspective, I’m Aditi Ranjan.
