Weiying Wu shares why she enjoys volunteering and community service.
Volunteering has been a journey of growth and fulfillment for me, starting with the Lincoln Summer Carnival. When the carnival organizers recruited volunteers, I reached out for this opportunity to help with my club. Joining the event as a part of the volunteer team, I quickly realized how impactful community service could be. From helping set up booths to supporting other volunteers, I saw firsthand how teamwork could create a memorable experience for everyone involved.
One of my most memorable roles during the carnival was running the darts game booth. I loved interacting with the kids who stopped by, cheering them on as they aimed for the balloon targets. Some were initially nervous, but with some encouragement, their faces would light up as they succeeded and came back with confidence. Seeing their excitement and hearing their laughter was deeply rewarding — it was a reminder of how small actions can easily brighten someone’s day. Since the carnival, I’ve sought out many volunteer opportunities. I’ve made lunches to distribute to people in need, ensuring they had had a meal to rely on.
At the Soy and Tofu Festival, I helped serve and interact with customers, learning about a different culture while contributing to a cause. Each experience taught me something new and allowed me to connect with many communities, and showed me the value of giving back.
If you’ve ever thought about volunteering but haven’t taken the initiative, I encourage you to try. Exploring different volunteer opportunities can help you discover your passions and make a meaningful impact. Whether it’s running a game booth, preparing meals or helping at a cultural festival, there’s something for everyone. Take the first step and see where it goes, and you might be surprised by how much you enjoy it and the difference you can make. With a Perspective, I’m Weiying Wu.
