I had three brothers under me and three sisters over me. Therefore I was told I was the man of the house. My dad was in and out of my life, mostly out. I learned basically from what I heard on the streets. Older men would say, \"you need to train a woman.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I used to hear my mother and her friends and my sisters sometimes speak negatively of men. And as a young man I took that personally and figured they were talking about me too. So I took a defense to it.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The first time I can remember actually physically abusing a woman I was about 16 years old. I was with a friend of mine and I witnessed him striking his girlfriend. And so I thought that was the right thing to do. So I did the same thing. I struck my girl. When I did she was very surprised. I'll never forget the look on her face when she asked, \"Why did you do that?\" And I really didn't have an answer. I know it didn't feel right but she didn't leave. She stayed there. So that was the ticket for me to say it was OK.\u003c/p>\n\u003ch3>'It Feels Good to Be Free and to Say These Things'\u003c/h3>\n\u003cp>When I was about 30 years old I fell into a relationship that lasted for about 10 years. I have to admit that I abused her in every fashion of the word \"abuse.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There came a time where she told me she wasn't afraid of me anymore. It shocked me because I didn't know what to do. I was losing my form of control, so I threatened her. Matter of fact I threatened her with a gun and she actually went to the police.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That cost me time in prison. While in prison I received a spiritual revelation. I had a chance to look at myself and see the ugliness of myself and who I thought I was and who I was not.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This was in 1998. In the wake of the #MeToo movement I wanted to share my story. I wanted to share the distortion of who I thought women were and that they were to be used.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I realize now this is a time of healing and it feels good to be free to be able to say these things. I can remember that in that 10-year relationship, my protection was for her to be silent. For her not to say anything.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>You know I thank the Lord Most High for allowing me to be free enough to speak about the ugliness of that part of me. I really, honestly believe that there are more men that need to see this within themselves.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I wrote a poem, an apology to the women I hurt and those who have been hurt at the hands of men like me.\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\n\u003ch3>My Apology\u003c/h3>\n\u003cp>I apologize, Ladies, for my ignorance,\u003cbr>\nI didn’t know.\u003cbr>\nYou see, I was blinded, mislead, and misguided by a fractured childhood,\u003cbr>\nfalse meaning of manhood, and a psychopathic ego.\u003cbr>\nI apologize for that person I used to be and for all the men who are still\u003cbr>\nblinded and cannot see.\u003cbr>\nI apologize to ALL Women known and unknown that happened across\u003cbr>\nmy self-destructive path. Whatever harm I’ve created, I hope it doesn’t last.\u003cbr>\nI apologize for not realizing the true essence of your role. The whole existence\u003cbr>\nof this earth lies in your soul.\u003cbr>\nI apologize for not realizing that you are a partner, not a tool. All the while,\u003cbr>\nyou were seeking love and support, not to be used.\u003cbr>\nI apologize for not realizing you are my help-mate, an extension of myself. Your\u003cbr>\nquality and necessity is valued more than ANY wealth.\u003cbr>\nYou see, I realize you have been misunderstood, unheard, and neglected\u003cbr>\nway too long. I sure hope it doesn’t take the next man this long to realize\u003cbr>\nhe’s been wrong.\u003cbr>\nI apologize for contributing to Satan’s plan and all the while called myself\u003cbr>\nfighting against \"the man.\"\u003cbr>\nI pray each and everyday to the Most High for forgiveness in neglecting\u003cbr>\nmy role as receiver of HIS most precious gift.\u003cbr>\nI apologize as a man, a TRUE Man, that I am.\u003cbr>\nWould you, please, accept MY Apology so that we can start over again?\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\n",

I had three brothers under me and three sisters over me. Therefore I was told I was the man of the house. My dad was in and out of my life, mostly out. I learned basically from what I heard on the streets. Older men would say, \"you need to train a woman.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I used to hear my mother and her friends and my sisters sometimes speak negatively of men. I was with a friend of mine and I witnessed him striking his girlfriend. And so I thought that was the right thing to do. So I did the same thing. I struck my girl. When I did she was very surprised. I'll never forget the look on her face when she asked, \"Why did you do that?\" And I really didn't have an answer. I know it didn't feel right but she didn't leave. She stayed there. So that was the ticket for me to say it was OK.\u003c/p>\n\u003ch3>'It Feels Good to Be Free and to Say These Things'\u003c/h3>\n\u003cp>When I was about 30 years old I fell into a relationship that lasted for about 10 years. I have to admit that I abused her in every fashion of the word \"abuse.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There came a time where she told me she wasn't afraid of me anymore. It shocked me because I didn't know what to do. I was losing my form of control, so I threatened her. Matter of fact I threatened her with a gun and she actually went to the police.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That cost me time in prison. While in prison I received a spiritual revelation. I had a chance to look at myself and see the ugliness of myself and who I thought I was and who I was not.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This was in 1998. In the wake of the #MeToo movement I wanted to share my story. I wanted to share the distortion of who I thought women were and that they were to be used.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I realize now this is a time of healing and it feels good to be free to be able to say these things. I can remember that in that 10-year relationship, my protection was for her to be silent. For her not to say anything.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>You know I thank the Lord Most High for allowing me to be free enough to speak about the ugliness of that part of me. I really, honestly believe that there are more men that need to see this within themselves.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I wrote a poem, an apology to the women I hurt and those who have been hurt at the hands of men like me.\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\n\u003ch3>My Apology\u003c/h3>\n\u003cp>I apologize, Ladies, for my ignorance,\u003cbr>\nI didn’t know.\u003cbr>\nYou see, I was blinded, mislead, and misguided by a fractured childhood,\u003cbr>\nfalse meaning of manhood, and a psychopathic ego.\u003cbr>\nI apologize for that person I used to be and for all the men who are still\u003cbr>\nblinded and cannot see.\u003cbr>\nI apologize to ALL Women known and unknown that happened across\u003cbr>\nmy self-destructive path. "content": "\u003cp>\u003cem>Four years ago, Fremont resident Candace Conti won a multi-million dollar suit against the Jehovah’s Witness church for allowing congregant Jonathan Kendrick to molest her as a child in the 1990s.\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>That case opened up a series of questions about church practices and its treatment of not only children, but women too.\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>As part KQED's #UsToo series, another Fremont woman and ex-Jehovah’s Witness, Georgia Browne, shares, in her own words, how she was ex-communicated from the church after she reported being raped by a congregant. \u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>We want to warn you, this story shares details of that rape and may be disturbing to some readers.\u003c/p>\n\u003ch2>You're Always Aware That You're Seen as a Lesser Being\u003c/h2>\n\u003cp>\"My mother was a Jehovah's Witness. She became one when I was two years old, and I remember being very involved in the church. I was in 110 percent. I did the door knocking -- you probably heard about the Witnesses knocking on the door. I did all the preaching.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Growing up in a congregation you're always aware that you are seen as a lesser being, that you have a position underneath men. Women have no position of authority in the congregation.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>When I was 23 years old, I started dating a (Jehovah's) Witness boy and we’d go out to some dance clubs. There was a night in particular where I had too much to drink. Then the next thing I remember was waking up when I felt my hymen break. I just screamed because in that second I knew everything was over; it was done. I had had sex outside of marriage even though it wasn't my fault and I was a woman, so any claim I made against him, it was going to be my fault. I was drunk.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[Afterward] I remember I pulled my dress down, I actually ran out of the house. He grabbed me and he starts crying and screaming, \"I'm sorry!\" He eventually convinced me to go inside, and he told me was going to get help. He said he had a problem. I ended up forgiving him and holding him while he was crying that night. If you can believe it. I knew in my head no one was going to take my side in this. I've got to figure this out.\u003c/p>\n\u003ch2>The Story of Dinah\u003c/h2>\n\u003cp>It's a common lesson taught, the story of Dinah. They teach about it in the Bible. [It's] about a young girl who was raped by a fella and the whole thing they teach about that is, well, if she hadn't been doing that, if she hadn't been there it wouldn't have happened to her. That puts women in the position where if they are victimized, they blame themselves.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[My boyfriend and I] ended up making the decision to get married. I look back now and I’m like, \"Bloody hell! Nobody in their right mind would do that!\" But I know for a fact that I was not in my right mind, You’re a brainwashed individual; you will make decisions like that, and I know that I'm not the only woman who's been in that position and made that decision. It happens and it's still happening.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I stayed with him for a year and the rapes continued. In this time I'm thinking, \"I want to get out of this. I need to go talk to the elders in our congregation.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I went to Kingdom Hall and I met with a group of four men in their mid-60s. I’m 24 years old and I’m terrified. So I’m trying to explain what has happened, and they want me to write out a letter, so I write down what I can, to the best of my ability. They said, \"Well if you're saying that your ex did these things we need to bring him in so we can ask him to his face.\" I said, \"No don't. Don't do that. Forget it.\" And they said, \"We need to deliberate.\" So I stepped outside, and I went back in the room and they let me know that they were going to disfellowship me or excommunicate me for fornication.\u003c/p>\n\u003ch2>My Story Isn't Singular\u003c/h2>\n\u003cp>I don't really remember walking out of the room at that moment. I remember understanding that everything I knew, everybody I had known and loved who was in that congregation -- which was basically all of my relatives -- everyone I'd grown up with was now cut off from me. I was in their eyes, dead. There was a truck coming down the road and I'd just stepped out into the road and I was ready to just be done. But I'll tell you, honest to God what saved me was those friends that they had warned against, those people in my life that they'd said I couldn't be around, [who] were bad people because they weren't JWs. I [later] filed for divorce.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>My story isn't singular. There are so many women who have gone through the process of being Jehovah's Witnesses, whether they're still in or out. I’m in recovery groups with women telling stories and I'm just like, \"Oh gosh, yeah, me too.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>When you are a victim you make a choice, and it's either you're going to stay a victim, or you're going to take what happened to you and you're going to learn from it, and you're going to become strong by it because you survived it. And that's what I chose. It was escape from that that gave me my life.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>Georgia Browne's story was lightly edited for print.\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003ch2>How Common Is This?\u003c/h2>\n\u003cp>There’s been little research on the inner workings of the Jehovah’s Witness religion, in part because of its insular nature. But Jane Fredrickson of the Faith Trust Institute, an educational resource addressing sexual and domestic violence, says all religious denominations deal with cases of sexual abuse and violence. And many of them, she says, have a hard time handling accusations properly.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Sometimes the focus is on protecting the churches' reputation or in rare cases, citing scripture. But most often church leaders, she says, don’t have a deep understanding the harm.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It is still a very private issue in a lot of ways, particularly in a faith community where it was a high profile donor, [a] member of the faith community,\" says Fredrickson. \"It's difficult for the faith leader to then manage that. That’s not necessarily a skill that is taught in seminary.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In 2016, the Pew Research Institute \u003ca href=\"http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016/04/26/a-closer-look-at-jehovahs-witnesses-living-in-the-u-s/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">produced demographic data\u003c/a>, showing that Jehovah’s Witnesses make up less than one percent of the U.S. population. In California, two-thirds of them are women. The religious organization has a low retention rate relative to other U.S. religious groups, according to Pew. Sixty-six percent of adults raised as Jehovah’s Witnesses no longer identify with the group.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Jehovah’s Witness church has not responded to our repeated attempts for comment.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>However, according to the \u003ca href=\"https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/2003087\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JW\u003c/a> website, while the church condemns sexual assault, it also puts the onus on the victim to ward off sexual advances. For instance, the church instructs women who are in the midst of a rape to scream or put up a fight. Only then is it considered rape in the eyes of the church.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Paul Grundy, a former JW member and creator of \u003ca href=\"https://www.jwfacts.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JWfacts.com\u003c/a>, says it's important to note that overall JWs are not abiding by these rules out of malice.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Jehovah Witnesses are generally exceptionally nice people that stick by a strict moral code,\" says Grundy. \"However, when situations of abuse occur, the way the religion handles it has been very poor. But does this mean that I'm on his good side? She reads aloud to her class, made up high school seniors.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"To what events do you need a verbal yes as consent?\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Boire had already planned to have this talk with her students about sexual harassment next quarter. But this question -- and the non-stop news about sexual harassment and abuse over the last few weeks -- has pushed the discussion to now.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"They know that it's wrong and they're very able to say, 'What that guy did was horrible,'\" says Boire. \"But I have taught students where they didn't even know sexual harassment was a thing.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[contextly_sidebar id=\"ujr44JUz6fB7urirk92OG0ZM3tOzE7f9\"]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Even if they do understand, says Boire, most don’t understand the nuances, and how sexual harassment can play out.
