"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. Today only one of those species, Spheniscus demersus, survives. Unfortunately, the future does not look very bright for them either making a day like this more important than ever. Population levels for this species in the wild have plummeted by over 90% in the past hundred years and they are now considered to be endangered, meaning that there is indeed a real risk they won’t be around for much longer in the wild at all.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Devoting a day to them should mean devoting ourselves to learning as much as we can about these charismatic critters and pledging to treat our planet as best we can. Penguins are generally considered to be a good sentinel species for the ocean environment. This means that their relative well-being is a good indicator of the health of the overall ecosystem; the challenges facing penguins are not really unique to penguins. They suffer from over-arching problems like over-fishing, climate change, habitat loss, introduced predators and, particularly for the African penguin, oil pollution. Today only one of those species, Spheniscus demersus, survives. Unfortunately, the future does not look very bright for them either making a day like this more important than ever. Population levels for this species in the wild have plummeted by over 90% in the past hundred years and they are now considered to be endangered, meaning that there is indeed a real risk they won’t be around for much longer in the wild at all.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Devoting a day to them should mean devoting ourselves to learning as much as we can about these charismatic critters and pledging to treat our planet as best we can. Penguins are generally considered to be a good sentinel species for the ocean environment. This means that their relative well-being is a good indicator of the health of the overall ecosystem; the challenges facing penguins are not really unique to penguins. They suffer from over-arching problems like over-fishing, climate change, habitat loss, introduced predators and, particularly for the African penguin, oil pollution. OccupySF is the offshoot of the \u003ca href=\"http://occupywallst.org/\">Occupy Wall Street\u003c/a> protests that have been going on in New York since mid-September. From the \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/10/06/BAFA1LECD5.DTL\">Chronicle\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>San Francisco police and Public Works crews dismantled a Financial District encampment early today that had been occupied by activists protesting economic inequality.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>About 80 officers wearing riot helmets confronted some 200 campers and their supporters at about 12:45 a.m. at the Occupy SF camp in front of the Federal Reserve Bank’s building at 101 Market St. near Main Street. The officers guarded city workers who removed tents, sleeping bags and other belongings…\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The camp was taken down hours after several hundred people marched through the Financial District in an Occupy SF-organized protest.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>KQED’s Amy Standen was downtown today and said about 150 protesters are still there. Apparently, the Department of Public Works has told protesters they can have their belongings back. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“It looks pretty organized,” Standen reports. “There’s a big stack of books, bags of food, chairs. There’s a communications system the protesters have set up.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>One protester she talked to said he had been at Occupy LA for two weeks and was in town now to help set up a movement here. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Here are two female protesters, 91 and 81 years old, speaking about the protest. Both are from Berkeley.\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Florence Hicks: There’s not apathy. They like to say there’s apathy, but there’s no apathy.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Margo Smith: A lot of the action has been on the internet and I think there’s a realization with the Arab Spring that you have to be there with the body, and not just on the internet. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Hicks: There’s a big march at 3 at the federal building and we’ll be at that. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Smith: It makes us very happy to see the young people out here. we’ve been doing this along time. An employee of one of the tenants in that building forwarded us the email:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>As you are aware, Occupy SF protesters had built an encampment on the public sidewalk outside the Bank’s property along Main, Market and Spear streets. Overnight, the City of San Francisco Police and Public Works departments requested that the protesters dismantle and remove their structures from the public sidewalk and they complied. We understand that the SFPD told the protesters that they could continue to protest on the public sidewalk daily as they wish, but without the encampment. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>While we were informed by the San Francisco Police Department of their plans, Bank management deferred to the City’s judgment and knowledge in handling these situations, as we rely on the expertise of the Police in terms of what is legally permitted with respect to such gatherings. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Employee safety is our biggest concern and we will continue to carefully monitor future protests to ensure your safety as well as the integrity of our property and our building. Here’s \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupy_Wall_Street#Background\">Wikipedia’s take\u003c/a>: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Perceptions vary as to the specific goals of the movement. According to Adbusters, a primary protest organizer, the central demand of the protest is that President Obama “ordain a Presidential Commission tasked with ending the influence money has over our representatives in Washington”.Liberal commentator Michael Moore had suggested that this is not like any other protest but this protest represents a variety of demands with a common statement about government corruption and the excessive influence of big business and the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans on U.S. laws and policies.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Peripheral demands such as raising taxes on the rich, raising taxes on corporations, ending corporate welfare, support for trade unionism, and protecting Medicare and Social Security in their traditional forms are expressed by some participants. Occupy Maine is asking for an investment in public transportation infrastructure and the return home of Maine National Guardsmen from wars overseas. The officers guarded city workers who removed tents, sleeping bags and other belongings…\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The camp was taken down hours after several hundred people marched through the Financial District in an Occupy SF-organized protest.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>KQED’s Amy Standen was downtown today and said about 150 protesters are still there. Apparently, the Department of Public Works has told protesters they can have their belongings back. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“It looks pretty organized,” Standen reports. “There’s a big stack of books, bags of food, chairs. An employee of one of the tenants in that building forwarded us the email:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>As you are aware, Occupy SF protesters had built an encampment on the public sidewalk outside the Bank’s property along Main, Market and Spear streets. Overnight, the City of San Francisco Police and Public Works departments requested that the protesters dismantle and remove their structures from the public sidewalk and they complied. We understand that the SFPD told the protesters that they could continue to protest on the public sidewalk daily as they wish, but without the encampment. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>While we were informed by the San Francisco Police Department of their plans, Bank management deferred to the City’s judgment and knowledge in handling these situations, as we rely on the expertise of the Police in terms of what is legally permitted with respect to such gatherings. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Employee safety is our biggest concern and we will continue to carefully monitor future protests to ensure your safety as well as the integrity of our property and our building. We will continue to keep you informed as the situation warrants, and encourage you to use the back entrance when entering and leaving the building. \u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>So, what’s the protesting about? Occupy Maine is asking for an investment in public transportation infrastructure and the return home of Maine National Guardsmen from wars overseas. Traffic on the Embarcadero was so packed with bicyclists, farmers’ market customers, bicycle cabs, tourists and joggers, that we almost missed the ferry.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Today, I realized that people flocking to the bay for fun is actually a modern problem. Because 40 years ago the goal was to \u003cem>avoid\u003c/em>the San Francisco Bay as much as possible.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That’s because it stank, says Andrew Gunther, executive director for the Center for Ecosystem Management and Restoration, in Oakland. He's the lead author on the State of the San Francisco Bay, \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfestuary.org/userfiles/SFEP_STATEofSFBAY2011.pdf\">(PDF)\u003c/a>, released on Monday. Gunther and I talked just before the opening of the 2011 \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfestuary.org/soe2011/\">State of the Estuary Conference\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Do you remember what the Bay was like before the Clean Water Act was passed, in 1972?\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I moved here in 1980, so I don’t. But my wife’s family is from the Bay Area, and she told me that when she was a girl, they used to drive from Mountain View to visit her grandmother in Berkeley. When they approached the Bay, they’d roll up their windows. In her family the Bay was called Lake Limburger, because of the aroma.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Ah, the sweet smell of raw sewage...\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I ran across a reference that in the 1950s, in the Alviso area, near San Jose, if you were to walk by the shore with silver coins in your pocket, they’d turn brown in a matter of minutes, because of pollutants in the atmosphere that would interact with the metal.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>You can just use your imagination and figure out what was flowing directly into San Francisco Bay. The Bay shoreline was not a pleasant place to be around.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>And now, only 40 years later, it’s safe (most of the time) to actually swim in the bay, according to the report. It’s amazing to me how far we’ve come, in so little time.\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"pullquote alignleft\">\n\u003cp>I ran across a reference that in the 1950s, in the Alviso area...if you were to walk by the shore with silver coins in your pocket, they’d turn brown in a matter of minutes...\u003c/p>\n\u003c/aside>\n\u003cp>I agree. In our modern era, where everything happens so fast, people don’t tend to realize that we’ve only been restoring the San Francisco Bay and controlling pollution for 30 to 40 years, whereas -- if you start at the Gold Rush -- we’ve spent a hundred years degrading it. When you look at that time scale, you can see we’re making amazing progress.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>But some problems, according to the report, are getting worse. For example, the amount of fresh water in the Bay.\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It’s a dynamic. The central bay, by the Golden Gate Bridge, is always a fairly oceanic, salty environment. Then as you move upstream, you move into what we call brackish water environments, and then you get into fresh water. In the spring, that fresh water extends farther into the Bay. Then, in the fall, like right now, the fresh water recedes because there’s less flow from the rivers.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So an estuary has this dynamic pulsing of salt across the year. But as we divert fresh water (for drinking and irrigation, for example) we have a situation where we have less of that dynamic pulsing, and also less total fresh water coming into the estuary. That affects all of the ecological processes and the resident organisms that have evolved for that dynamic system.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://www.fs.fed.us/aboutus/history/chiefs/thomas.shtml\">Jack Ward Thomas\u003c/a> says “Ecosystems aren’t more complicated than we think, they’re more complicated than we \u003cem>can\u003c/em> think.” We’ve seen significant decline in the fish populations, particularly in the Suisun and San Pablo Bays. And we’re pretty sure that’s due, at least in part, to the loss of this dynamic of fresh/salty water. And then there are the animals that would eat those fishes, too, so you get this cascade of effects through the food chain.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>The 2011 \u003ca href=\"http://sfestuary.org/soe2011/\">State of the San Francisco Estuary Conference\u003c/a> runs through Wednesday, in Oakland. \u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\n",
