Sweep!\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>While the Giants are looking more and more like a baseball juggernaut, they're only halfway to their first World Series title in 56 years. They hope to wrap it up on the road.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We've just got to take that confidence and some of the good approaches that we've had into these last two games and take them down to Texas with us,\" Matt Cain said after Thursday night's 9-0 win over the Texas Rangers gave San Francisco a 2-0 Series lead.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Cain pitched 7 2-3 innings and combined with his bullpen on a four-hitter, and Edgar Renteria reprised his October success with a home run and three RBIs.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>While the Giants had the best ERA in the majors during the regular season, they were just 17th in runs — the fewest among the eight postseason teams. Yet San Francisco has outscored Texas 20-7 and outhit the Rangers .314 to .227. Colby Lewis starts Game 3 for the Rangers on Saturday night against Jonathan Sanchez.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Forty of the previous 51 teams to take a 2-0 lead have gone on to win the title, including seven straight and 13 of the last 14.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"I don't think we caught any breaks yet,\" Rangers manager Ron Washington said. \"We certainly don't feel like we're defeated. We're heading home. The Giants sent the high-octane Rangers offense to its first shutout since Sept. 23.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Not bad for a team that scored 19 runs in its six-game NL championship series win over Philadelphia.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Unbelievable,\" said Renteria, who has just eight regular-season homers in the last two years. \"You guys know I have power.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>No team has overcome a 2-0 Series deficit since the 1996 New York Yankees against Atlanta. The Giants have won each time they took a 2-0 lead: in 1922, 1933 and 1954.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We're not playing the same,\" said Nelson Cruz, one of several slumping Rangers. \"I don't know what it is. I wish I could tell you. The way we're playing, it's different. It's not us.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Cruz is 1 for 9. Josh Hamilton and Michael Young are each 1 for 8 with no RBIs.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"I think that more or less it has to do with the pitching we've been facing,\" Washington said. \"We had some opportunities early in the ballgame to put some runs on the board, and we had the right people up there, and he made his pitches.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>At this rate, team president and part-owner Nolan Ryan probably wants to grab a ball himself and get on the mound.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's not going to bother us. Renteria, whose 11th-inning single won Game 7 of the 1997 Series for Florida against Cleveland, followed with a two-run single. Pinch-hitter Aaron Rowand hit a two-run triple against Michael Kirkman, and Andres Torres doubled in a run.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Cain allowed all four hits, and has allowed only a single and an unearned run in 21 1-3 innings over three postseason starts. "content": "\u003cp>I do not think I'm telling you anything you don't know when I say that a lot of baseball fans, including those currently rooting for the Giants, have had it with Fox's baseball announcers, Tim McCarver and Joe Buck. \u003ca href=\"http://deadsspin.com/5673181/silencing-joe-buck-and-tim-mccarver-a-simple-tech-solution\">ShutUpTimMcCarver.com\u003c/a>, featuring a section called \u003ca href=\"http://deadspin.com/5673181/silencing-joe-buck-and-tim-mccarver-a-simple-tech-solution\">Tim McCarver gems\u003c/a> (hint: that's a sarcastic heading), seems to capture the general sentiment of those who'd rather hear the game described by the electronically generated computer voice informing you which number to push to reach a customer service agent in the Philippines than by the former \u003ca href=\"http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mccarti01.shtml\">all-star catcher\u003c/a>. (It's even worse for Joe Buck. The exact phrase \"\u003ca href=\"http://www.google.com/search?q=joe+buck&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#sclient=psy&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=JRG&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&q=tim+mccarver+sucks&aq=f&aqi=g4g-o1&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&pbx=1&fp=20a34ca3dbaf6fd0\">Tim McCarver sucks\"\u003c/a> calls up just 4,360 Google search results while \"\u003ca href=\"http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=GTG&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&noj=1&q=%22joe+buck+sucks%22&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=\">Joe Buck sucks\u003c/a>\" returns 22,000.)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So what's your average Kruk and Kuip-loving Giants' fanatic who also thinks Vin Scully can't hold a candle to \u003ca href=\"http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=jaG&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&q=dave+flemming+giants&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=pPLJTIvTGJP0tgPFrZGUDg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=6&ved=0CDwQsAQwBQ&biw=1255&bih=743\">ultra-sexy\u003c/a> Dave Flemming to do?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Those of you who've tried to simply listen to the radio while watching TV have no doubt noticed that the TV lags a good pitch or two behind the radio (or is it vice-versa?) Sort of interesting, though no matter how hard you try to wish a line drive out of Pablo Sandoval on TV after you just heard him pop out on the radio, it doesn't work.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The sports site Deadspin addresses the conundrum in this post called \"\u003ca href=\"http://deadspin.com/5673181/silencing-joe-buck-and-tim-mccarver-a-simple-tech-solution\">\u003cstrong>Silencing Joe Buck And Tim McCarver: A Simple Tech Solution To Our Crappy World Series Announcers\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>.\" The post summarizes a somewhat intricate technical solution from Bote's Radio Pages involving your \u003ca href=\"http://www.botecomm.com/bote/radio/radiodelay.html\">PC\u003c/a> or \u003ca href=\"http://www.botecomm.com/bote/radio/radiodelay_mac.html\">Mac\u003c/a> , your radio, and a radio delay utility. If you're like me, you'll also need a mute button for your larynx to keep from showering epithets upon household members when you can't get it to work.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Someone who works here at KQED, a much more brilliant person than I, actually tried it last night. Here's what he wrote about the results. To me, who is still waiting for eight-track tapes to make a comeback, it sounds a little like the sounds humans make as heard by a dog. But for you, it might help:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Basically, you run either a radio or your iPhone/Android (with a paid MLB radio stream) into your computer, use software to delay the audio and then output it to speakers. PC users can use a free utility called RadioDelay ( http://www.daansystems.com/radiodelay/) that will you up to 30 seconds of delay.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But since I’m on a Mac, I had to go another route. I have a terrestrial radio, which I ran into my computer’s audio input. I then set the computer’s audio input signal to the input line (as opposed to built-in mic). Then I opened a new project in Garageband and set audio input to the computer input, turned on the monitor and record-enabled the track. I then added the UADelay effect.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But here’s the problem: AU Delay will give you a maximum of 2 seconds delay. You can apply four AU Delay effects to one track, plus one to the master, which gives you a total delay of 10 seconds. I tried it out in the morning, and it worked perfectly. But come game-time, after dragging my radio, laptop and audio cables over to a friend’s apartment, and hooking up the whole set-up, we discovered that the 10-second delay only got us about half-way there. It seems like the broadcast delay is about 20 to 30 seconds.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>If I were on a PC, it would be no problem (a declaration I’ve never ever thought I would write) using RadioDelay. But on a Mac, I can either install some other third-party plugins and mess around with ProTools, etc. OR I can piggyback more laptops with Garageband until we get the right amount of delay. I imagine three will get the job done, but having four laptops (with a maximum possible delay of 40 seconds) will definitely do the trick.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Now I just need to convince three friends with Macbooks to come watch the game at my place...\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>I sent out a call for other solutions from the folks here, and here's what I got back:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>My chums on Athletics Nation (Editors Note: KQED requires us to treat our A's-loving colleagues with respect) have been dealing with this problem for several years, because most of us prefer to have the radio audio and the TV picture, but they’re not in sync. Eventually someone found the solution, a device called DelayPlay. Unfortunately it costs $175 and you need to order it from Pennsylvania, so probably not going to work for the Series. But here’s the link to our \u003ca href=\"http://www.athleticsnation.com/2007/4/23/172354/335\">2007 discussion\u003c/a>.\u003cbr>\n----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Frankly, I love the delay between the radio and the TV broadcasts. It allows me time to prepare my dinner in the kitchen while listening to Kruk and Kuip on the radio. They can alert me to great developments in the game. I then have 15-20 seconds to walk over to my living room and SEE the action our local guys have just described.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I should mention that one of my favorite moments last night, among many, was when Joe Buck said something to the effect that “this score shows that we didn’t know what we were talking about when we predicted a pitcher’s duel.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Refreshing.\u003cbr>\n-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\u003cbr>\nThe radio broadcast on KNBR is about 9-10 seconds ahead of the TV broadcast. So you hear it, then see it (if you want). I tried the streamed KNBR broadcast last night and discovered that it was 40 seconds ahead of their own radio broadcast, or about 50 seconds ahead of TV. Useless. I timed it with a stopwatch during the pre-game stuff.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>For those of us to whom a Buck/McCarver broadcast is simply an unconscionable travesty and a Giants game isn't a Giants game without Kruk, Kuip and John Miller, this is both annoying and challenging. It is remarkable, however, how the brain adjusts. After just a couple of innings I was perfectly comfortable experiencing the game through the radio, which has always been by far the superior medium for tension, imagery, emotion and memory, while using the TV as a reference point as needed for close pitches and plays in the field.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>[ad floatright]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So there you go. Anyone else with techniques, tricks, or simple meditations on never getting what you want when you want it despite the glory of this World Series run, let us know. \u003c/p>\n\n",

(It's even worse for Joe Buck. Here's what he wrote about the results. To me, who is still waiting for eight-track tapes to make a comeback, it sounds a little like the sounds humans make as heard by a dog. But for you, it might help:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Basically, you run either a radio or your iPhone/Android (with a paid MLB radio stream) into your computer, use software to delay the audio and then output it to speakers. PC users can use a free utility called RadioDelay ( http://www.daansystems.com/radiodelay/) that will you up to 30 seconds of delay.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But since I’m on a Mac, I had to go another route. I have a terrestrial radio, which I ran into my computer’s audio input. I then set the computer’s audio input signal to the input line (as opposed to built-in mic). Then I opened a new project in Garageband and set audio input to the computer input, turned on the monitor and record-enabled the track. I then added the UADelay effect.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But here’s the problem: AU Delay will give you a maximum of 2 seconds delay. You can apply four AU Delay effects to one track, plus one to the master, which gives you a total delay of 10 seconds. I tried it out in the morning, and it worked perfectly. But come game-time, after dragging my radio, laptop and audio cables over to a friend’s apartment, and hooking up the whole set-up, we discovered that the 10-second delay only got us about half-way there. It seems like the broadcast delay is about 20 to 30 seconds.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>If I were on a PC, it would be no problem (a declaration I’ve never ever thought I would write) using RadioDelay. But on a Mac, I can either install some other third-party plugins and mess around with ProTools, etc. OR I can piggyback more laptops with Garageband until we get the right amount of delay. I imagine three will get the job done, but having four laptops (with a maximum possible delay of 40 seconds) will definitely do the trick.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Now I just need to convince three friends with Macbooks to come watch the game at my place...\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>I sent out a call for other solutions from the folks here, and here's what I got back:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>My chums on Athletics Nation (Editors Note: KQED requires us to treat our A's-loving colleagues with respect) have been dealing with this problem for several years, because most of us prefer to have the radio audio and the TV picture, but they’re not in sync. Eventually someone found the solution, a device called DelayPlay. Unfortunately it costs $175 and you need to order it from Pennsylvania, so probably not going to work for the Series. But here’s the link to our \u003ca href=\"http://www.athleticsnation.com/2007/4/23/172354/335\">2007 discussion\u003c/a>.\u003cbr>\n----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Frankly, I love the delay between the radio and the TV broadcasts. It allows me time to prepare my dinner in the kitchen while listening to Kruk and Kuip on the radio. They can alert me to great developments in the game. I then have 15-20 seconds to walk over to my living room and SEE the action our local guys have just described.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I should mention that one of my favorite moments last night, among many, was when Joe Buck said something to the effect that “this score shows that we didn’t know what we were talking about when we predicted a pitcher’s duel.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Refreshing.\u003cbr>\n-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\u003cbr>\nThe radio broadcast on KNBR is about 9-10 seconds ahead of the TV broadcast. So you hear it, then see it (if you want). I tried the streamed KNBR broadcast last night and discovered that it was 40 seconds ahead of their own radio broadcast, or about 50 seconds ahead of TV. Useless. I timed it with a stopwatch during the pre-game stuff.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>For those of us to whom a Buck/McCarver broadcast is simply an unconscionable travesty and a Giants game isn't a Giants game without Kruk, Kuip and John Miller, this is both annoying and challenging. It is remarkable, however, how the brain adjusts. After just a couple of innings I was perfectly comfortable experiencing the game through the radio, which has always been by far the superior medium for tension, imagery, emotion and memory, while using the TV as a reference point as needed for close pitches and plays in the field.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

However, over the course of my 20 years living in San Francisco, I have grown to love the team. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But it wasn't just geographical proximity that did it. Let me confess something that is simply not said in polite company nowadays: I \u003cem>loved\u003c/em> Barry Bonds.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So forgive the following, overlong post. But so much of the Giants' narrative is still intertwined with Bonds that I felt compelled to comment on the recent negative attention San Francisco fans received when they \u003ca href=\"http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=12859975\">welcomed him back\u003c/a> in a pre-game ceremony during the NLCS.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more--> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>To my mind, the World Series appearance by the Giants completes the final stage of the team's post-Barry Bonds' re-branding, the solidification of a new identity centered around preternatural pitching and--this year, at least--Cinderella re-treads.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Yet, in the midst of this remarkable over-achievement, I keep \u003ca href=\"http://www.google.com/search?q=barry+bonds#q=barry+bonds&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbo=u&tbs=nws:1&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wn&fp=d1a30581bafd5460\">reading\u003c/a>--not to mention being drawn into conversations about--Bonds.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This is perhaps understandable, as Bonds has grown within the collective imagination into the perfect monster: a surly, spoiled, dishonest ogre, whose steroid-induced physiognomy can only signify a narcissistic self-entitlement the likes of which can be found only in Shakespeare antagonists, autocratic rulers, and reality TV personalities.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Last week, in the middle of the tense Phillies' series, a Philadelphia Inquirer columnist \u003ca href=\"http://www.philly.com/inquirer/columnists/john_gonzalez/20101020_Gonzo___In_a_bubble_by_the_bay.html\">wrote\u003c/a> this:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>“Aside from being comical, there's something tragic and ugly about Bonds - defiant and smug, even in the face of an ongoing perjury prosecution - being the game's all-time home run leader. Of all the inmates hypothetically housed in Baseball's Alcatraz, Bonds is among the most infamous - right up there with the Black Sox, Pete Rose, and the rest of the cons on Cell Block D (for disgraced). And yet even the wicked have loyal supporters. If Bonds ever ends up on the inside for real, he'll have no trouble finding someone to bake a cake with a file in it.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But here's the interesting part: Collectively, San Fran fans are clearly behind Bonds. It's classic strength-in-numbers behavior. But separate one or two from the pack, get them alone, and suddenly Bonds becomes a guilty pleasure everyone denies. I stopped scores of Giants fans on Tuesday, and no one would openly confess to backing Bonds. Apparently all that cheering didn't actually happen. You and I and the national TV audience must have imagined it.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Joe Eskenazi of the SF Weekly blog \u003ca href=\"http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2010/10/giants_world_series_barry_bond.php\">The Snitch\u003c/a> couldn't let that go:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Gonzalez referred to the AT&T Park faithful as \"orange-and-black clad lemmings, [who] plunged one after the other off the embarrassment cliff Tuesday.\" Doing some reporting, Gonzalez tried to approach fans to put them on the record supporting No. 25, \"and no one would openly confess to backing Bonds.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Now, Philadelphia is the same place where fans react to a franchise quarterback's drafting with racially-tinged boos, where flashmobs turn violent, and where sitting in the bleachers at Citzens Bank Park leaves you susceptible to being vomited upon. So maybe we don't exactly know where Gonzo is coming from.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>SF Weekly e-mailed Gonzalez for comment. He's a nice guy, who told us he was \"just having some fun at Giants fans' expense.\" Fair enough, but it leaves one wondering -- what would have the appropriate reaction to Bonds have been?\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>That's a good question, and one that I'm not going to attempt to answer, because opinion about Bonds has become an actual \u003cem>issue\u003c/em>, having long ago exited the sports bubble within which even journalists, usually required to at least feign objectivity, feel safe to throw around opinions.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I will, however, contribute a personal anecdote, as it belies everything I and probably you have ever read or heard about Bonds.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Back in the '90s, when the Twin Towers were still standing, Afghanistan was a country no one could locate on a map, and a great deal of money could be made in the stock market by investing in random ticker symbols, I worked for Yahoo! Our biggest competitor then was Excite.com (still up and running as a \u003ca href=\"http://excite.com/\">functioning domain\u003c/a>!), and both companies fielded softball teams that played in a Silicon Valley league. I was our squad's firstbaseman, and one day, arriving at the field for a big intra-company game, I ran smack into a wall of spectators significantly denser than the one formed by the stray kibbitzers we usually drew.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"What's going on?\" I asked a teammate.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Excite's playing Barry and Bobby Bonds against us,\" he said, nonsensically.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I waded through the crowd, to the diamond, and there indeed stood Barry and his father, Bobby, warming up alongside the Excite team. Huh? Awash in cognitive dissonance, I soon found out that Bonds had signed a promotional deal to make three appearances on Excite's behalf, and this was one of them. Bobby was just along for fun. Excite had brought along a photographer and PR dude to chronicle the sure-shellacking they were going to administer to their rivalrous dupes.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Well, long story-probably-not-short-enough, here's the upshot of the event as it exists in my mind:\u003c/p>\n\u003cul>\n\u003cli>Barry hit a ball that almost tipped the top of my glove at first base, then kept rising to shoot out over the fence in rightfield.\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>We won the game, despite the presence in the opposing lineup of one of the game's great hitters.\u003c/li>\n\u003c/ul>\n\u003cp>And finally, the point of all this:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Barry Bonds couldn't have been more gracious, hospitable, friendly, and relaxed. He played the game genuinely, then signed autographs, posed for pictures, and chatted with us for close to an hour. Sure he was being paid, but that shouldn't have been enough to prevent him from acting like an ass; we were just a bunch of local fans, after all, pestering him for a little face time.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I did share one moment with Bonds alone. He came to bat one inning and we intentionally walked him. He trotted to first then shot me a deeply suspicious look. I smiled at him, and he grinned back. Then I shook his hand.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Okay, sue me Philadelphia sports columnist, but the 12-year old fan in me was agog! Everyone was impressed, frankly, at his demeanor the entire event. That night, Bonds, one could argue, a local boy who played high school ball in San Mateo, was a genuine part of the community.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But like I said, that was the '90s, when the Twin Towers were still standing, no one could find Afghanistan on the map, and the entire American economy had yet to be marked with an asterisk. It was even a time when one could imagine that one day a really gifted baseball player might hit 73 home runs in a season without the aid of illegal performance enhancers.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Snitch's Eskenazi again, with a somewhat \u003ca href=\"http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2010/10/giants_world_series_barry_bond.php\">different view\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>As a longtime Giants fan, I've always been a bit perplexed by the notion San Francisco supporters were particularly naive or foolish -- or that our team's efforts were ill-gotten -- because of Bonds' obvious drug use. I refuse to apologize because our steroidal freak was so much better than the other teams' steroidal freaks...\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Well, yes and no. I did meet plenty of Giants' fans in those days who refused to believe Bonds was on the juice. The comment of one in particular stays with me: \"I know him, he would never do that,\" a woman who had never met the man once said to me.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But isn't that the heart of the matter? We see some sports hero on TV or in interviews, or even play against him in a meaningless softball game, and we think we have some insight into him, or even \"know\" him? And in our childish identification, we choose to know him as a friend.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad floatright]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So I say: If some of we Giants' fans still hold a soft spot for Bonds, if we choose to view him through a nostalgic lens, maybe that is what nostalgia's for. Excite had brought along a photographer and PR dude to chronicle the sure-shellacking they were going to administer to their rivalrous dupes.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Well, long story-probably-not-short-enough, here's the upshot of the event as it exists in my mind:\u003c/p>\n\u003cul>\n\u003cli>Barry hit a ball that almost tipped the top of my glove at first base, then kept rising to shoot out over the fence in rightfield.\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>We won the game, despite the presence in the opposing lineup of one of the game's great hitters.\u003c/li>\n\u003c/ul>\n\u003cp>And finally, the point of all this:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Barry Bonds couldn't have been more gracious, hospitable, friendly, and relaxed. He played the game genuinely, then signed autographs, posed for pictures, and chatted with us for close to an hour. Sure he was being paid, but that shouldn't have been enough to prevent him from acting like an ass; we were just a bunch of local fans, after all, pestering him for a little face time.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I did share one moment with Bonds alone. He came to bat one inning and we intentionally walked him. He trotted to first then shot me a deeply suspicious look. I smiled at him, and he grinned back. Then I shook his hand.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Okay, sue me Philadelphia sports columnist, but the 12-year old fan in me was agog! Everyone was impressed, frankly, at his demeanor the entire event. That night, Bonds, one could argue, a local boy who played high school ball in San Mateo, was a genuine part of the community.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But like I said, that was the '90s, when the Twin Towers were still standing, no one could find Afghanistan on the map, and the entire American economy had yet to be marked with an asterisk. It was even a time when one could imagine that one day a really gifted baseball player might hit 73 home runs in a season without the aid of illegal performance enhancers.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Snitch's Eskenazi again, with a somewhat \u003ca href=\"http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2010/10/giants_world_series_barry_bond.php\">different view\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>As a longtime Giants fan, I've always been a bit perplexed by the notion San Francisco supporters were particularly naive or foolish -- or that our team's efforts were ill-gotten -- because of Bonds' obvious drug use. I refuse to apologize because our steroidal freak was so much better than the other teams' steroidal freaks...\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Well, yes and no. I did meet plenty of Giants' fans in those days who refused to believe Bonds was on the juice. The comment of one in particular stays with me: \"I know him, he would never do that,\" a woman who had never met the man once said to me.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But isn't that the heart of the matter? We see some sports hero on TV or in interviews, or even play against him in a meaningless softball game, and we think we have some insight into him, or even \"know\" him? And in our childish identification, we choose to know him as a friend.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",
