Here's the announcement (also \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2010/12/Winning-City-Announcement-v13.pdf\">here, in PDF form\u003c/a>):\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>“We sought a venue that fulfills our promise – to showcase the best sailors in the world competing on the fastest boats,” said Richard Worth, Chairman, America’s Cup Event Authority. “And hosting the America’s Cup in San Francisco will realize that promise.“\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We thank Mayor Newsom, Board President Chiu, Supervisor Mirkarimi and all of the Board of\u003cbr>\nSupervisors, the staff at City Hall and the Port Authority, Mark Buell and San Francisco America’s Cup Organizing Committee, and all who have worked so diligently on securing the bid,” Worth continued. “We look forward to working closely with City of San Francisco over the coming months to create a world-class America’s Cup event, and a large and lasting beneficial impact on the City.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The world-famous San Francisco Bay will be home to the 2013 America’s Cup Finals and the Challenger Selection Series for the Louis Vuitton Cup, as well as an America’s Cup World Series event in 2012. The 34th America’s Cup is projected to pump an estimated $1.4 billion dollars into the San Francisco region.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"As a native San Franciscan, I grew up sailing in front of the City. Racing for the America’s Cup in San Francisco is something I have dreamt of my whole life,\" said Paul Cayard, CEO of Sweden’s Artemis Racing, a challenger for the 34th America’s Cup. \"By hosting sailing's most important event in the Bay, the world will see sailing as it never has before. As a team, Artemis Racing is particularly looking forward to competing in San Francisco.\" \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Racing will be held on the iconic San Francisco Cityfront and be visible from world-renown tourist destinations such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marin Headlands, Crissy Field, the Embarcadero and Fisherman’s Wharf. This will be the first time the America’s Cup has been hosted in the United States since 1995.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Today is one of great celebration, with San Francisco winning the right to host the America’s Cup, and all of the economic benefit, jobs and excitement that comes with it,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom. “San Francisco is the best place on Earth to host an event of this stature, and we could not be more proud to be the city that brings the America’s Cup back home to the United States.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Independent studies show that the America’s Cup delivers the third largest economic impact in sport to host countries, behind the Olympic Games and soccer’s World Cup. The 34th America’s Cup is projected to pump an estimated $1.4 billion dollars into the San Francisco region.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"As a native San Franciscan, I grew up sailing in front of the City. Racing for the America’s Cup in San Francisco is something I have dreamt of my whole life,\" said Paul Cayard, CEO of Sweden’s Artemis Racing, a challenger for the 34th America’s Cup. \"By hosting sailing's most important event in the Bay, the world will see sailing as it never has before. As a team, Artemis Racing is particularly looking forward to competing in San Francisco.\" \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Racing will be held on the iconic San Francisco Cityfront and be visible from world-renown tourist destinations such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marin Headlands, Crissy Field, the Embarcadero and Fisherman’s Wharf. An influx of millions of tourists is expected for the Challenger Series for the Louis Vuitton Cup and the America’s Cup Finals in late 2013.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“My support for San Francisco hosting the America’s Cup goes beyond the opportunity to see our team competing on home waters,” said Russell Coutts, CEO, ORACLE Racing, the current America’s Cup defending team. “We are excited to sail for our sport’s greatest trophy, on a stretch of water legendary among sailors worldwide.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Race Village will be constructed on Piers 19 and 29, with the team bases at and around Pier 30/32. The city's \u003ca href=\"http://library.municode.com/HTML/14130/level1/AXIII.html#AXIII_s13.101.5\">charter states\u003c/a> that in the event of a mayoral vacancy, the Board of Supervisors chooses an interim until an election is held:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>If the Office of Mayor becomes vacant because of death, resignation, recall, permanent disability or the inability to carry out the responsibilities of the office, the President of the Board of Supervisors shall become Acting Mayor and shall serve until a successor is appointed by the Board of Supervisors.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Any person filling a vacancy pursuant to subsection (a) or (b) of this Section shall serve until a successor is selected at the next election occurring not less than 120 days after the vacancy...\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\n\u003cp>Any successor needs six votes on the Board, no easy task, and speculation about just who will emerge as the consensus candidate has gone on for many months. In May, former mayoral candidate and progressive heartthrob Matt Gonzalez was \u003ca href=\"http://www.fogcityjournal.com/wordpress/2012/gonzalez-being-considered-for-interim-mayoral-post/\">rumored\u003c/a> to be in the running. That never panned out, and in June, the Bay Citizen wrote \u003ca href=\"http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/18/us/18bcboard.html\">this piece\u003c/a> pegging David Chiu, the Board president, and Aaron Peskin, San Francisco Democratic Party Chairman, as the frontrunners.\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nMr. Chiu, 40, would be San Francisco’s first Chinese-American mayor. He was elected board president on his first day in office in 2008 thanks largely to Mr. Peskin, his predecessor as president...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Mr. Chiu is popular and smart, with a firm grasp of policy issues and a centrist’s disposition; Mr. Peskin has been known to refer to him jokingly as “the Chinese Obama,” aides say. Mr. Chiu is often willing to break with his progressive allies and seek compromises with moderate colleagues.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The 46-year-old Mr. Peskin, on the other hand, is widely described as a bare-knuckled powerbroker, a capable operative who has turned the Democratic Party in San Francisco into a solidly progressive political machine.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Who has put together a majority on that board before? David Chiu and Aaron Peskin,” said Eric Jaye, a former political strategist for Mr. Newsom. “You need to look at those two as front-runners, without a doubt.”\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A couple of months ago, a no-holds-barred realpolitik \u003ca href=\"http://abledartsbathroomwall.yuku.com/topic/3779\">analysis\u003c/a> posted on The Wall, a political forum on San Francisco politics, figured Peskin as the politico-most-likely to fill a vacated mayoralty. \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nPeskin is the mostly likely to be appointed mayor by the other Guys. He started out well in politics as a good-government type.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>However, he got carried away with his own power. He developed a nasty habit of getting drunk after dinner and calling public officials at home night, loudly berating them with slurred obscenities.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>After being termed out as a supe, he successfully enlisted his cronies to orchestrate a take-over of the Democratic County Central Committee. They pushed out the good-natured, openly-gay Scott Wiener as chair and put Peskin in his place. Since then, Peskin has created a well oiled machine whose purpose is to make himself mayor.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He has expressed his style of politics with the infamous Peskin principle: “Payback is a bitch.” This is the motto of every political machine. He first snarled these words at a woman sitting in a wheelchair.\u003c/p>\n\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Just 11 days ago, however, the Bay Citizen reported on Peskin's \u003ca href=\"http://www.baycitizen.org/sf-supervisors-race/story/left-wing-shudders-its-presumed-leader/\">waning influence\u003c/a>, stating that a string of political setbacks has revealed that his \"reach seems to have been overstated.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\nFour days ago, the Bay Area Reporter named state Senator Mark Leno and Assemblyman Tom Ammiano as \u003ca href=\"http://www.ebar.com/news/article.php?sec=news&article=5198\">front-runners\u003c/a>. Of Ammiano, the city's previous progressive standard-bearer who lost to incumbent mayor Willie Brown in the 1999 mayoral run-off, BAR says this:\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nA number of supervisors say they want Ammiano to move into Room 200 should the job become available. They contend Ammiano has the six votes needed among the current board to be elected to the post.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We may have a 'Run, Tom, Run' situation à la 1999,\" Supervisor Chris Daly told the Bay Area Reporter , referring to the write-in campaign that propelled Ammiano into that year's mayoral race in which he forced then-Mayor Willie Brown into a surprise runoff.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Ammiano, who is expected to easily win a second term in the Assembly Tuesday, left the door open to being named mayor during a brief phone interview with the B.A.R. this week.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"You never say never in politics, that is the rule, but I am extremely satisfied in Sacramento. That is my priority,\" said Ammiano.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Finally, Matier & Ross today delved into the \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/11/01/BADG1G42LD.DTL\">\u003cstrong>complex political calculus\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> that will go into selecting the ultimate choice. \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nThey include Assemblyman and former mayoral candidate Tom Ammiano (who tells us he's not interested), former Mayor Willie Brown (not interested), former Mayor Art Agnos (he's interested but doesn't have the votes) and former board President Aaron Peskin (ditto).\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Another suggestion has been to give the job to a non-political technocrat as a caretaker until the 2011 election. Names that have been floated include Controller Ben Rosenfeld, City Administrator Ed Lee and Ed Harrington, general manager of the city Public Utilities Commission...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Because no one appears to have the votes, board President \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfbos.org/index.aspx?page=2105\">(David) Chiu\u003c/a> will automatically become acting mayor under the city charter.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The only question is, for how long.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>When the new board is sworn in, the supervisors will have the choice of either taking no action - thus leaving Chiu in his new role - or putting together six votes for someone else.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That, however, could get complicated.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Not only do they have to find someone they all agree on, they will also have the added complication of coming up with a plausible justification for removing Chiu, \" Brown said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"In effect, they will have to fire him.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And that would not be easy, given that Chiu would be the city's first Chinese American mayor, in a city with an increasingly influential Asian populace.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>On the flip side, Chiu has fallen out of favor with some of the very progressives who installed him as board president in the first place. There is talk of replacing him with someone who will push their agenda harder, assuming a new progressive majority is elected.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The name mentioned most often is Supervisor David Campos, who would be the city's first gay (and Latino) mayor.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>[ad floatright]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So there you have it. Of course, it's all academic if Newsom loses tomorrow and settles back in at City Hall. The most \u003ca href=\"http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/california-politics/2010/10/polls-show-tight-races-for-attorney-general-cooley-harris-lieutenant-governor-newsom-maldonado.html\">recent poll\u003c/a> puts Newsom ahead of Maldonado 42-37... \u003c/p>\n\n",

The city's \u003ca href=\"http://library.municode.com/HTML/14130/level1/AXIII.html#AXIII_s13.101.5\">charter states\u003c/a> that in the event of a mayoral vacancy, the Board of Supervisors chooses an interim until an election is held:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>If the Office of Mayor becomes vacant because of death, resignation, recall, permanent disability or the inability to carry out the responsibilities of the office, the President of the Board of Supervisors shall become Acting Mayor and shall serve until a successor is appointed by the Board of Supervisors.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Any person filling a vacancy pursuant to subsection (a) or (b) of this Section shall serve until a successor is selected at the next election occurring not less than 120 days after the vacancy...\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\n\u003cp>Any successor needs six votes on the Board, no easy task, and speculation about just who will emerge as the consensus candidate has gone on for many months. In May, former mayoral candidate and progressive heartthrob Matt Gonzalez was \u003ca href=\"http://www.fogcityjournal.com/wordpress/2012/gonzalez-being-considered-for-interim-mayoral-post/\">rumored\u003c/a> to be in the running. That never panned out, and in June, the Bay Citizen wrote \u003ca href=\"http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/18/us/18bcboard.html\">this piece\u003c/a> pegging David Chiu, the Board president, and Aaron Peskin, San Francisco Democratic Party Chairman, as the frontrunners.\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nMr. Chiu, 40, would be San Francisco’s first Chinese-American mayor. He was elected board president on his first day in office in 2008 thanks largely to Mr. Peskin, his predecessor as president...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Mr. Chiu is popular and smart, with a firm grasp of policy issues and a centrist’s disposition; Mr. Peskin has been known to refer to him jokingly as “the Chinese Obama,” aides say. Mr. Chiu is often willing to break with his progressive allies and seek compromises with moderate colleagues.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The 46-year-old Mr. Peskin, on the other hand, is widely described as a bare-knuckled powerbroker, a capable operative who has turned the Democratic Party in San Francisco into a solidly progressive political machine.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Who has put together a majority on that board before? David Chiu and Aaron Peskin,” said Eric Jaye, a former political strategist for Mr. Newsom. “You need to look at those two as front-runners, without a doubt.”\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A couple of months ago, a no-holds-barred realpolitik \u003ca href=\"http://abledartsbathroomwall.yuku.com/topic/3779\">analysis\u003c/a> posted on The Wall, a political forum on San Francisco politics, figured Peskin as the politico-most-likely to fill a vacated mayoralty. \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nPeskin is the mostly likely to be appointed mayor by the other Guys. He started out well in politics as a good-government type.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>However, he got carried away with his own power. He developed a nasty habit of getting drunk after dinner and calling public officials at home night, loudly berating them with slurred obscenities.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>After being termed out as a supe, he successfully enlisted his cronies to orchestrate a take-over of the Democratic County Central Committee. They pushed out the good-natured, openly-gay Scott Wiener as chair and put Peskin in his place. Since then, Peskin has created a well oiled machine whose purpose is to make himself mayor.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He has expressed his style of politics with the infamous Peskin principle: “Payback is a bitch.” This is the motto of every political machine. He first snarled these words at a woman sitting in a wheelchair.\u003c/p>\n\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Just 11 days ago, however, the Bay Citizen reported on Peskin's \u003ca href=\"http://www.baycitizen.org/sf-supervisors-race/story/left-wing-shudders-its-presumed-leader/\">waning influence\u003c/a>, stating that a string of political setbacks has revealed that his \"reach seems to have been overstated.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

Of Ammiano, the city's previous progressive standard-bearer who lost to incumbent mayor Willie Brown in the 1999 mayoral run-off, BAR says this:\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nA number of supervisors say they want Ammiano to move into Room 200 should the job become available. They contend Ammiano has the six votes needed among the current board to be elected to the post.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We may have a 'Run, Tom, Run' situation à la 1999,\" Supervisor Chris Daly told the Bay Area Reporter , referring to the write-in campaign that propelled Ammiano into that year's mayoral race in which he forced then-Mayor Willie Brown into a surprise runoff.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Ammiano, who is expected to easily win a second term in the Assembly Tuesday, left the door open to being named mayor during a brief phone interview with the B.A.R. this week.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"You never say never in politics, that is the rule, but I am extremely satisfied in Sacramento. That is my priority,\" said Ammiano.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Finally, Matier & Ross today delved into the \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/11/01/BADG1G42LD.DTL\">\u003cstrong>complex political calculus\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> that will go into selecting the ultimate choice. \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nThey include Assemblyman and former mayoral candidate Tom Ammiano (who tells us he's not interested), former Mayor Willie Brown (not interested), former Mayor Art Agnos (he's interested but doesn't have the votes) and former board President Aaron Peskin (ditto).\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Another suggestion has been to give the job to a non-political technocrat as a caretaker until the 2011 election. Names that have been floated include Controller Ben Rosenfeld, City Administrator Ed Lee and Ed Harrington, general manager of the city Public Utilities Commission...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Because no one appears to have the votes, board President \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfbos.org/index.aspx?page=2105\">(David) Chiu\u003c/a> will automatically become acting mayor under the city charter.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The only question is, for how long.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>When the new board is sworn in, the supervisors will have the choice of either taking no action - thus leaving Chiu in his new role - or putting together six votes for someone else.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That, however, could get complicated.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Not only do they have to find someone they all agree on, they will also have the added complication of coming up with a plausible justification for removing Chiu, \" Brown said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"In effect, they will have to fire him.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And that would not be easy, given that Chiu would be the city's first Chinese American mayor, in a city with an increasingly influential Asian populace.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>On the flip side, Chiu has fallen out of favor with some of the very progressives who installed him as board president in the first place. There is talk of replacing him with someone who will push their agenda harder, assuming a new progressive majority is elected.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The name mentioned most often is Supervisor David Campos, who would be the city's first gay (and Latino) mayor.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

At the end of the day, I want someone in Sacramento who demonstrates respect for their colleagues and gets things done. Mr. Maldonado has shown his cards today. Will he cut the Prison Guards down to national level salaries adjusted for our cost of living?
