"content": "\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Update, 4:15 p.m. Monday:\u003c/strong> San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced her office would charge David DePape, 42, with attempted murder after his attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi, 82.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Jenkins' office also will charge DePape with felony bodily injury to an elder and use of a deadly weapon, among other felonies.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Jenkins said she believes this was not a random act of violence, saying that instead DePape was motivated by anti-Democrat hate fueled by high-volume political rhetoric.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"What is clear based on the evidence that we have thus far, is that this house and the speaker herself were specific targets of the defendant,\" Jenkins said at a press conference Monday.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>She added, \"As leaders and as citizens, it is incumbent upon us all to watch the words that we say and to turn down the volume of our political rhetoric. We should be able to all engage in passionate political discourse but still remain respectful of one another.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Security will be increased at the Pelosis' home, San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said. His department and Capitol Police are working together to coordinate protection not only in the near term, but long-term for the household.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"This has shaken a lot of people,\" Scott said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>DePape is expected to be arraigned in court Tuesday, where more evidence may be revealed, Jenkins said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cb>Original post, 2:55 p.m. Monday: \u003c/b>The man accused of attacking Paul Pelosi, husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, told police he wanted to hold the speaker hostage and “break her kneecaps\" due to alleged \"lies\" told by Democrats, authorities said Monday.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>David DePape, 42, \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/news/11930397/nancy-pelosis-husband-assaulted-in-san-francisco-break-in\">awakened a sleeping Paul Pelosi when he broke into the couple's San Francisco home early Friday morning\u003c/a>, according to a federal affidavit filed in court Monday.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Federal prosecutors have filed two charges against DePape, days after police say he broke into the Pelosis' home and struck the Democratic leader’s 82-year-old husband in the head with a hammer. Paul Pelosi was left seriously injured in the attack, underwent surgery for a skull fracture, and suffered other injuries to his arms and hands.[aside postID=\"news_11930397\" label=\"Related Post\"]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>DePape is charged federally with influencing, impeding or retaliating against a federal official by threatening or injuring a family member. He also faces one count of attempted kidnapping of a United States official on account of the performance of official duties.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The announcement of the federal charges comes as San Francisco's district attorney is set to also announce state criminal charges against DePape, whom police say shouted out, “Where is Nancy?,” before the attack. He was arrested Friday on suspicion of attempted murder, elder abuse and burglary and is expected to be arraigned on state charges later today.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a recorded interview with San Francisco Police Department officers, DePape laid out his plan for the House speaker, according to federal charging documents, which read:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\"DEPAPE stated that he was going to hold Nancy hostage and talk to her. If Nancy were to tell DEPAPE the 'truth,' he would let her go, and if she 'lied,' he was going to break 'her kneecaps.' DEPAPE was certain that Nancy would not have told the 'truth.' In the course of the interview, DEPAPE articulated he viewed Nancy as the 'leader of the pack' of lies told by the Democratic Party. DEPAPE also later explained that by breaking Nancy’s kneecaps, she would then have to be wheeled into Congress, which would show other Members of Congress there were consequences to actions. DEPAPE also explained generally that he wanted to use Nancy to lure another individual to DEPAPE.\"\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Over the weekend Elon Musk tweeted, then deleted, a fringe website’s far-flung conspiracy theories about the attack, as his purchase of Twitter raised concerns that the social media platform would no longer seek to limit misinformation and hate speech.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>San Francisco's district attorney, Brooke Jenkins, rejected multiple conspiracy theories.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“At the time that the suspect had entered the Pelosi home, he was, in fact, looking for Ms. Pelosi,” Jenkins told reporters late Sunday in San Francisco.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“The other thing is we want to make it clear that there were only two people in the home at the time that the police arrived, Mr. Pelosi and the suspect. There was no third person present,” she said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We have nothing to suggest that these two men knew each other prior to this incident.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott also has said the attack was targeted.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The district attorney’s remarks come as the gruesome attack is being \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/news/11930523/conspiracy-theories-and-qanon-posts-shed-light-on-suspect-in-assault-at-pelosi-home\">mocked and dismissed on conservative, far-right social media\u003c/a>, even among some Republicans leaders and those at the highest levels of social power. Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., was among those making light of the incident, \u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/DonaldJTrumpJr/status/1587061753434689536\">tweeting out a joke about a Halloween costume\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Paul Pelosi remains hospitalized at San Francisco General Hospital after undergoing surgery for a fractured skull and other injuries. Speaker Pelosi, who was in Washington, D.C., at the time of the attack, returned swiftly to California. Unlike presidents, congressional leaders have security protection for themselves, but not their families.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The attack was an unsettling echo of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol, when rioters trying to overturn Joe Biden’s election defeat of Donald Trump stormed the halls calling, “Where’s Nancy?”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Police were dispatched to the Pelosis' home in the upscale Pacific Heights neighborhood around 2:20 a.m. Friday after Paul Pelosi placed a 911 call. Jenkins said DePape broke into the rear door and made his way upstairs to confront Paul Pelosi. He was carrying zip ties, two people briefed on the matter told The Associated Press; those people could not discuss details of the investigation publicly and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Police said they arrived to see the two men struggling over a hammer, when DePape struck Pelosi at least once before being tackled by officers.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The incident sparked fresh security concerns for lawmakers and other elected officials before the midterms.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>With nearly 10,000 threats against members of Congress in the last year, U.S. Capitol Police have advised lawmakers to take precautions. Taub did not respond Friday to calls or emails.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A 2013 article in the Chronicle described David DePape as a “hemp jewelry maker” who lived in a Victorian flat in Berkeley with Taub, who hosted a talk show on local public-access TV called “Uncensored 9/11,” in which she appeared naked and pushed conspiracy theories that the 2001 terrorist attacks were “an inside job.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A pair of web blogs posted in recent months online under the name David DePape contained rants about technology, aliens, communists, religious minorities, transgender people and global elites.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>An August 24 entry titled “Q” displayed a scatological collection of memes that included photos of the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and made reference to QAnon, the baseless pro-Trump conspiracy theory that espouses the belief that the country is run by a deep-state cabal of child sex traffickers, satanic pedophiles and baby-eating cannibals.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Big Brother has deemed doing your own research as a thought crime,” read a post that appeared to blend references to QAnon with George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In an August 25 entry titled “Gun Rights,” the poster wrote: “You no longer have rights. Your basic human rights hinder Big Brothers ability to enslave and control you in a complete and totalizing way.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The web-hosting service WordPress removed one of the sites Friday afternoon for \u003ca href=\"https://godisloving.wordpress.com/\">violating its terms of service\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>On a different \u003ca href=\"https://www.frenlyfrens.com/\">site\u003c/a>, someone posting under DePape’s name repeated false claims about COVID vaccines and wearing masks, questioned whether climate change is real and displayed an illustration of a zombified Hillary Clinton dining on human flesh.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There appeared to be no direct posts about Pelosi, but there were entries defending former President Donald Trump and Ye, the rapper formally known as Kayne West, who recently made antisemitic comments.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In other posts, the writer said Jews helped finance Hitler’s political rise in Germany and suggested an antisemitic plot was involved in Russia’s recent invasion of Ukraine.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“The more Ukrainians die NEEDLESSLY the cheaper the land will be for Jews to buy up,” the post said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a September 27 post, the writer said any journalists who denied Trump’s false claims of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election “should be dragged straight out into the street and shot.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",
