Maya Rogers, who is also with the Bayview HEAL Zone, is a lifelong Bayview resident. They position themselves as an eco-friendly alternative to herbicides and other chemicals. (Francesca Segre/KQED)\u003c/figcaption>\u003c/figure>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Update 1:30 p.m. \u003c/strong>Luxor Cab said that its service garage near Jerrold Avenue and Upton Street was destroyed in a three-alarm fire that emitted a thick plume of black smoke early Monday afternoon.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Here are the details, as \u003ca href=\"http://sfappeal.com/2014/02/sffd-fighting-blaze-at-bayview-auto-body-shop/\" target=\"_blank\">reported by Bay City News\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>The fire, reported at 11:53 a.m., has been contained but not fully extinguished as of shortly after 1 p.m., Fire Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The blaze caused the roof to collapse at the building, which was still smoldering this afternoon, Talmadge said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Charles Rathbone, assistant manager with Luxor Cab Co., said the fire destroyed a service garage on Upton Street that the company used for maintenance and repairs.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“It’s a total loss,” Rathbone said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He said all employees inside the building escaped without any injuries.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>However, he said, “We lost a bunch of cars in there, including a beautiful 1938 Plymouth we had hoped to showcase as part of our history.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Luxor was one of the city’s first cab companies, operating since 1928.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“It’s nothing that money can’t fix,” Rathbone said of the fire.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Nobody was hurt so we’re fortunate in that event.”\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Original post: \u003c/strong>The San Francisco Fire Department is fighting a three-alarm fire in the city's Bayview neighborhood. Since opening a clinic in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood a few years ago, Burke Harris has won plenty of praise — and funding that she’s used to open the \u003ca href=\"http://centerforyouthwellness.org/\">Center for Youth Wellness\u003c/a> on Third Street.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Building on research by Kaiser Permanente, Burke Harris is pioneering a study of how chronic exposure to “\u003ca href=\"http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/pub-res/pdf/childhood_stress.pdf\">toxic stress\u003c/a>” affects people, starting in infancy. Toxic stress among youth is caused by “adverse childhood experiences,” things like having a parent with mental illness, a father behind bars, domestic violence, friends shot or killed by gangs. These situations trigger the “fight or flight” response, according to Burke Harris.
