In a newsroom career that began in Chicago in 1972, Dan has worked for \u003cem>The San Francisco Examiner,\u003c/em> Wired and TechTV and has been published in The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, Business 2.0, Salon and elsewhere.\r\n\r\nSince joining KQED in 2007, Dan has reported, edited and produced both radio and online features and breaking news pieces. "bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. "content": "\u003cp>A team of Russian and American scientists is attracting worldwide attention with a paper that finds that Japan's devastating March earthquake was preceded by marked atmospheric changes near the quake's epicenter immediately before it struck. The finding is the latest in more than a decade of research looking into the possibility that stresses in the Earth's crust before a major quake may be connected to pronounced changes in the atmosphere from the surface to its uppermost layers.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Spoiler alert:\u003c/strong> This does not mean scientists have found a way to predict earthquakes. Yet. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a \u003ca href=\"http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1105/1105.2841.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">preliminary (non-peer-reviewed) paper \u003c/a>released this week in Vienna, the team working in Southern California, Maryland, and several Russian institutions said that a rise in atmospheric temperatures was recorded over the epicenter of the Tohoku earthquake, just off the northeast coast of the island of Honshu, in the days immediately before the 9.0 shake occurred on March 11. The quake and subsequent tsunami killed 24,000 people in Japan and caused damage in much of the Pacific basin. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The researchers are led by \u003ca href=\"http://www.chapman.edu/SCS/EES/faculty/ouzonov.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Dimitar Ouzounov\u003c/a>, an assistant professor of earth sciences at Southern California's Chapman University who also works at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Ouzounov has collaborated with others on several other papers that have documented anomalies in atmospheric conditions near quake epicenters. \u003ca href=\"http://www.mendeley.com/research/achtergronden-van-ontwikkeling-van-het-lager-onderwijs-en-van-schoolstrijd-nederland-18621905-een-poging-tot-sociaalhistorische-analyse-vrijheid-van-onderwijs-marges-het-onderwijs-maatschappelijk-perspectief-l-box-j-dronkers/\" target=\"_blank\">One paper documents \u003c/a>rising atmospheric temperatures before two California quakes in September 2004: a 6.0 quake near \u003ca href=\"http://www.parkfield.com/parkfield/\" target=\"_blank\">Parkfield\u003c/a>, on the San Andreas Fault northeast of Paso Robles, and a 5.5 tremor in \u003ca href=\"http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=509\" target=\"_blank\">Bodie\u003c/a>, north of Mono Lake. Ouzounov \u003ca href=\"http://www.csmonitor.com/Science/2011/0518/Japan-earthquake-Big-shallow-quakes-have-a-warning-signal-say-researchers\" target=\"_blank\">told the Christian Science Monitor \u003c/a> that he and his colleagues \"have crunched data for more than 100 quakes in Asia and Taiwan ... and have found similar correlations for earthquakes with magnitudes bigger than 5.5 and depths less than 31 miles.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So what exactly did the team find when they looked at the atmospheric data from the Tohoku earthquake region? In layperson's shorthand, air temperatures above the monster quake's epicenter area rose and the upper atmosphere went nuts with loose subatomic particles and escaping heat. That is, something caused temperatures to rise in the lower atmosphere; in the \u003ca href=\"http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ionosphere\" target=\"_blank\">ionosphere\u003c/a>, much higher up, an unusually high level of \u003ca href=\"http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/electron\" target=\"_blank\">electrons\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outgoing_longwave_radiation\" target=\"_blank\">outgoing long-wave radiation\u003c/a> were detected. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>What does that mean? Ouzounov et al. have seen this often enough to believe it could signal that seismic and tectonic processes--along faults that are about to rupture or at the boundaries of plates that are about to shift--have a direct linkage to these atmospheric changes. The finding is the latest in more than a decade of research looking into the possibility that stresses in the Earth's crust before a major quake may be connected to pronounced changes in the atmosphere from the surface to its uppermost layers.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Spoiler alert:\u003c/strong> This does not mean scientists have found a way to predict earthquakes. Yet. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a \u003ca href=\"http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1105/1105.2841.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">preliminary (non-peer-reviewed) paper \u003c/a>released this week in Vienna, the team working in Southern California, Maryland, and several Russian institutions said that a rise in atmospheric temperatures was recorded over the epicenter of the Tohoku earthquake, just off the northeast coast of the island of Honshu, in the days immediately before the 9.0 shake occurred on March 11. The quake and subsequent tsunami killed 24,000 people in Japan and caused damage in much of the Pacific basin. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The researchers are led by \u003ca href=\"http://www.chapman.edu/SCS/EES/faculty/ouzonov.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Dimitar Ouzounov\u003c/a>, an assistant professor of earth sciences at Southern California's Chapman University who also works at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Ouzounov has collaborated with others on several other papers that have documented anomalies in atmospheric conditions near quake epicenters. \u003ca href=\"http://www.mendeley.com/research/achtergronden-van-ontwikkeling-van-het-lager-onderwijs-en-van-schoolstrijd-nederland-18621905-een-poging-tot-sociaalhistorische-analyse-vrijheid-van-onderwijs-marges-het-onderwijs-maatschappelijk-perspectief-l-box-j-dronkers/\" target=\"_blank\">One paper documents \u003c/a>rising atmospheric temperatures before two California quakes in September 2004: a 6.0 quake near \u003ca href=\"http://www.parkfield.com/parkfield/\" target=\"_blank\">Parkfield\u003c/a>, on the San Andreas Fault northeast of Paso Robles, and a 5.5 tremor in \u003ca href=\"http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=509\" target=\"_blank\">Bodie\u003c/a>, north of Mono Lake. Ouzounov \u003ca href=\"http://www.csmonitor.com/Science/2011/0518/Japan-earthquake-Big-shallow-quakes-have-a-warning-signal-say-researchers\" target=\"_blank\">told the Christian Science Monitor \u003c/a> that he and his colleagues \"have crunched data for more than 100 quakes in Asia and Taiwan ... and have found similar correlations for earthquakes with magnitudes bigger than 5.5 and depths less than 31 miles.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So what exactly did the team find when they looked at the atmospheric data from the Tohoku earthquake region? In layperson's shorthand, air temperatures above the monster quake's epicenter area rose and the upper atmosphere went nuts with loose subatomic particles and escaping heat. That is, something caused temperatures to rise in the lower atmosphere; in the \u003ca href=\"http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ionosphere\" target=\"_blank\">ionosphere\u003c/a>, much higher up, an unusually high level of \u003ca href=\"http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/electron\" target=\"_blank\">electrons\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outgoing_longwave_radiation\" target=\"_blank\">outgoing long-wave radiation\u003c/a> were detected. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

Somebody, it seems, hired Burson-Marsteller, a top public-relations firm, to pitch anti-Google stories to newspapers, urging them to investigate claims that Google was invading people’s privacy. Burson even offered to help an influential blogger write a Google-bashing op-ed, which it promised it could place in outlets like The Washington Post, Politico, and The Huffington Post.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The plot backfired when the blogger turned down Burson’s offer and posted the emails that Burson had sent him. It got worse when \u003ca href=\"http://www.usatoday.com/money/media/2011-05-06-google_n.htm\" target=\"_blank\">USA Today broke a story\u003c/a> accusing Burson of spreading a “whisper campaign” about Google “on behalf of an unnamed client.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But who was the mysterious unnamed client? Yet, as I sat in my cubicle sifting through yet another \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeoCities\">Geocities\u003c/a> \"personal home page\" visually signaling its creator's fidelity to Pamela Anderson, or my tenth \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-level_marketing\">multi-level marketing\u003c/a> distributor's site of the day, I really had to wonder.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>All of which is to say: The thing we're talking about in this post? This ain't those. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Library of Congress has launched its \u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox\">\u003cstrong>National Jukebox\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>, and it's the kind of project that makes you fall in love with the web all over again. From the \u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/about\">About page\u003c/a>: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>The Library of Congress presents the National Jukebox, which makes historical sound recordings available to the public free of charge. The Jukebox includes recordings from the extraordinary collections of the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation and other contributing libraries and archives. Recordings in the Jukebox were issued on record labels now owned by Sony Music Entertainment, which has granted the Library of Congress a gratis license to stream acoustical recordings.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>At launch, the Jukebox includes more than 10,000 recordings made by the Victor Talking Machine Company between 1901 and 1925.
