"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. "bio": "Peter is a general assignment reporter covering Northern California news for KQED’s daily radio newscasts. He reports on a wide range of stories from current court cases to San Jose city hall.\r\n\r\nSince joining KQED in 1990, Peter has covered everything from the beginnings of the World Wide Web to the dot-com bust, from preserving Silicon Valley's open space to the preservation of historic Valley landmarks.\r\n\r\nPeter caught the radio bug at WAUS-FM while still a student at Andrews University in his home town of Berrien Springs, MI. He did local news and hosted a classical music program. Since then, he has pursued a variety of assignments, including production work at WBAI in New York and broadcasting to the English language community of Geneva, Switzerland via Radio 74. A few weeks ago, \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2012/01/17/video-jon-stewart-takes-on-controversial-apple-supplier-foxconn/\">Jon Stewart called the company’s plant\u003c/a> in Shenzen, China, which has become \u003ca href=\"http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/07/business/global/07suicide.html\">infamous\u003c/a> for worker suicides, “an abomination.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This weekend CNN ran a \u003ca href=\"http://money.cnn.com/video/technology/2012/02/06/t-ts-apple-foxconn-worker.cnnmoney/\">\u003cstrong>report on Foxconn\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>, in which reporter Stan Grant talks to a female Chinese worker, face blurred for the camera, who says she has never seen an intact iPad despite spending more than 60 hours a week working on them. The woman works, eats, and sleeps at the factory, and said she would be fired if caught speaking to the media. One memorable quote: “They use women as men, and men as animals.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Just one worker speaking, of course, but her account adds to the multitude of reports about oppressive working conditions at the factory complex. "content": "\u003cp>(AP) NEW YORK -- After years of experimenting, the top video destinations on the Web are suddenly flush with original programming: documentaries, reality shows and scripted series.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Over the next few months, YouTube, Netflix and Hulu will roll out their most ambitious original programming yet -- a digital push into a traditional television business that has money, a bevy of stars and a bold attitude of reinvention.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The long-predicted collision between Internet video and broadcast television is finally under way. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>No one is suggesting that the quality on the Internet is close to that of broadcast TV, but it's becoming easy to imagine a day when it will be. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And even though critics question whether new media can rival a business that's been around for about 70 years, the video sites have sought partnerships with seasoned professionals. Later this year, it will release \"House of Cards,\" a highly anticipated adaptation of the British miniseries produced by David Fincher and starring Kevin Spacey. Next year, it will debut new episodes of the cultish comedy \"Arrested Development,\" which originally aired on Fox.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>Internet channels\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Hulu plans a Feb. 14 premiere for \"Battleground,\" a mock political documentary. The site will later release \"Up to Speed,\" a six-part documentary by Richard Linklater about \"monumentally ignored monuments of American cities.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Hulu, which has some 30 million monthly users and 1.5 million for its monthly subscription service Hulu Plus, is co-owned by the parent companies of NBC, Fox and ABC.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Yahoo has sought to capitalize on its enormous search audience of nearly 180 million unique monthly visitors by drawing viewers to its original programming, including a slate of women-focused shows launched last fall and comedy programming planned for February. Its first scripted entry will be \"Electric City,\" a futuristic animated series produced by Tom Hanks, who will also voice a character.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>San Bruno-based YouTube, which is owned by Google (GOOG), recently launched an entire catalog of original programming, spending $100 million on the gradual rollout of more than 100 niche-oriented channels.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The channels don't have the pressures of a 24-hour schedule and instead focus on short-form, on-demand programming. Partners vary from The Wall Street Journal to World Wrestling Entertainment to Madonna.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>At the recent consumer electronics trade show CES, YouTube's global head of content predicted that by 2020 about 75 percent of channels will be transmitted by the Internet. And video will soon be 90 percent of all traffic.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Over time, you will see more and more television properties, television channels distributed over the Internet,\" Robert Kyncl said. \"Everything in its due time.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Internet delivery allows programming that is \"much harder to fulfill through traditional distribution means ... because we have a global scale,\" Kyncl added.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And online systems can serve niche audiences that would be difficult to sustain any other way, and do so at lower cost.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>YouTube plans to expand to hundreds of Internet channels, just as television went from a few networks to dozens of cable channels. In the next few years, \"most of your interests will have channels on YouTube,\" Kyncl predicts.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>Media convergence\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Netflix, which streamed 2 billion hours of video in the fourth quarter of 2011, is already operating under the assumption that video networks -- whether streaming or televised -- are converging. Just as Web video is undertaking original programming, TV networks are experimenting with systems such as TV Everywhere, which allows viewers to watch channels on the Web and on mobile devices.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"You can think of us as a cable-TV network, but we like to think we are at the center,\" says Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix. \"We are an Internet TV network, and then they are going to become like us. But it's the same thing, really.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Hastings offers a comparison between Netflix and HBO: \"We are becoming more like them in doing some originals, starting that journey, and they are becoming more like us in creating an on-demand interface like HBO Go,\" which allows viewers to watch channels on the Web and on mobile and tabulate devices. \u003c/p>\n\n",
