"bio": "Amanda joined KQED Science’s engagement team as a Senior Audience Engagement Strategist in the spring of 2019. She has helped craft messaging around wildfires, the coronavirus pandemic, climate change and many other stories. She has also brought KQED Science to new platforms such as Reddit’s Ask Me Anything series. Prior to joining KQED Science, Amanda spent seven years as an engagement producer with Forum, KQED’s daily live call-in show. She got her start in radio at KALW's weekly call in show, City Visions, before going on to an internship and stint at NPR's Talk of the Nation.\r\n\r\nPrior to journalism, Amanda taught English at Lowell High School. She's a native of Petaluma and currently lives under the \"South San Francisco the Industrial City\" sign in South City. She believes that engagement is vital to news’s future and that good journalism listens as much as it asks questions.",

(Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)\u003c/figcaption>\u003c/figure>\n\u003cp>SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In a season of fabulous finishes, Eli Manning and the Giants had another one in them.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And now New York is headed toward the ending that matters most: another trip to the Super Bowl.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Five plays after the \u003cspan style=\"color: red\">49ers\u003c/span>' Kyle Williams fumbled a punt, Lawrence Tynes kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime, sending the Giants to the Super Bowl with a 20-17 victory over San Francisco in the NFC championship game on Sunday.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Guys never quit, never ever have any doubts,\" Manning said. \"They keep believing and fighting until the very end no matter what the circumstances are. I think everybody knew we were going to get a break, we were going to get a chance to win this game.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In another tight contest in this decades-old postseason rivalry, both defenses made key stops before New York capitalized on a rare mistake in San Francisco's resurgent season. Williams' blunder put the Giants in perfect position for another sensational finish in a season full of them.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The first three possessions in overtime ended in punts before Williams fumbled. The Giants won it moments later and silenced — for good this time — the towel-waving, poncho-wearing sellout crowd at cold, rainy Candlestick Park.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It was one of those situations where I tried to turn it upfield and it just didn't work out,\" Williams said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Manning and the Giants (12-7) will face the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl on Feb. 5 in Indianapolis as 3½-point underdogs. The last time the teams met for the NFL title, 2008, the Giants ended the Patriots' bid for a perfect season.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Tynes had a hand, er, foot in getting the Giants to that one, too, kicking a field goal in overtime.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Devin Thomas put the Giants in position this time by recovering his second fumble of the game after Jacquian Williams stripped the ball from fill-in return man Kyle Williams, who also fumbled earlier to set up a New York touchdown.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's my second NFC championship game, my second game-winner,\" Tynes said of his kick 7:54 into overtime. \"It's amazing. I had dreams about this last night. It was from 42, not 31, but I was so nervous today before the game just anticipating this kind of game. I'm usually pretty cool, but there was something about tonight where I knew I was going to have to make a kick. Hats off to Eli, offense, defense. Great win.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Holder Steve Weatherford celebrated with a slip-and-slide on his back down the soggy field. Victor Cruz fell to his knees. Tynes quickly found his crying wife for a warm hug. Manning tossed his gloves into the temporary seats with a big smile, then received a surprise visit from big brother, Peyton, in the locker room.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Manning went 32 of 58 for 316 yards and two touchdowns and overcame six sacks in his record fifth road playoff win, New York's fifth in a row overall. Manning orchestrated five fourth-quarter wins during the regular season.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He threw a go-ahead 17-yard touchdown pass to Mario Manningham with 8:34 remaining after Kyle Williams fumbled for the first time.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Giants challenged that the ball touched Williams' right knee and Thomas recovered with 11:06 left and coach Tom Coughlin won, giving the Giants the ball back at the 29.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"That was a tremendous football game for those that really enjoy football at it's very basic element,\" said Coughlin, who matched former Cowboys coach Tom Landry for most road playoff wins with seven. \"Just a classic football game that just seemed like no one was going to put themselves into position to win it. Fortunately, we were able to do that.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A 12-point underdog in the 2008 title game, the Giants battered Brady and got a last-minute TD pass from Manning to Plaxico Burress to win their third Super Bowl. Five months ago, Manning declared he was in the same class as Tom Brady. Now, he'll get another chance to outdo him on the NFL's biggest stage.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>During this playoff run, he's already outplayed Aaron Rodgers and the defending champion Packers, and fellow former No. 1 pick Alex Smith.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Cruz set the tone Sunday with eight of his 10 receptions in the first half and finished with 142 yards.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's just been a tremendous effort by all of us, man,\" Cruz said. \"We understand that any one of us can get hot at any moment. As long as we're all on the same page and just playing together, man, we've got a great group of guys.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Giants appeared on the verge of collapsing and Coughlin's job status in jeopardy just a month ago, when they fell to 7-7 with an embarrassing loss to the Washington Redskins on Dec. 18.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>They were facing elimination the following week against the Jets and Rex Ryan, but the Giants won 29-14. They followed with a 31-14 win over Dallas in the regular-season finale to win the NFC East and get to the playoffs for the first time since 2008.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>New York dominated Atlanta at home in the opening round, and then came another stunner: a 37-20 victory at Green Bay.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Vernon Davis caught touchdown passes of 73 and 28 yards for the NFC West champions (14-4), who went from 6-10 a year ago to a contender and ended an eight-year playoff drought.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It will be a tough one. It will take a while to get over,\" coach Jim Harbaugh said. \"There were a lot of ways in which we played well enough to win. We just didn't come away with it.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Smith completed just 12 of 26 passes for 196 yards, connecting on only one short throw to a wide receiver. With no threats on the outside, San Francisco managed one third-down conversion, coming on the final play of regulation. I think everybody knew we were going to get a break, we were going to get a chance to win this game.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In another tight contest in this decades-old postseason rivalry, both defenses made key stops before New York capitalized on a rare mistake in San Francisco's resurgent season. The last time the teams met for the NFL title, 2008, the Giants ended the Patriots' bid for a perfect season.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Tynes had a hand, er, foot in getting the Giants to that one, too, kicking a field goal in overtime.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Devin Thomas put the Giants in position this time by recovering his second fumble of the game after Jacquian Williams stripped the ball from fill-in return man Kyle Williams, who also fumbled earlier to set up a New York touchdown.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's my second NFC championship game, my second game-winner,\" Tynes said of his kick 7:54 into overtime. \"It's amazing. I had dreams about this last night. It was from 42, not 31, but I was so nervous today before the game just anticipating this kind of game. I'm usually pretty cool, but there was something about tonight where I knew I was going to have to make a kick. Hats off to Eli, offense, defense. Great win.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Holder Steve Weatherford celebrated with a slip-and-slide on his back down the soggy field. Victor Cruz fell to his knees. Tynes quickly found his crying wife for a warm hug. Manning tossed his gloves into the temporary seats with a big smile, then received a surprise visit from big brother, Peyton, in the locker room.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Manning went 32 of 58 for 316 yards and two touchdowns and overcame six sacks in his record fifth road playoff win, New York's fifth in a row overall. Manning orchestrated five fourth-quarter wins during the regular season.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He threw a go-ahead 17-yard touchdown pass to Mario Manningham with 8:34 remaining after Kyle Williams fumbled for the first time.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Giants challenged that the ball touched Williams' right knee and Thomas recovered with 11:06 left and coach Tom Coughlin won, giving the Giants the ball back at the 29.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"That was a tremendous football game for those that really enjoy football at it's very basic element,\" said Coughlin, who matched former Cowboys coach Tom Landry for most road playoff wins with seven. \"Just a classic football game that just seemed like no one was going to put themselves into position to win it. Fortunately, we were able to do that.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A 12-point underdog in the 2008 title game, the Giants battered Brady and got a last-minute TD pass from Manning to Plaxico Burress to win their third Super Bowl. Five months ago, Manning declared he was in the same class as Tom Brady. Now, he'll get another chance to outdo him on the NFL's biggest stage.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>During this playoff run, he's already outplayed Aaron Rodgers and the defending champion Packers, and fellow former No. 1 pick Alex Smith.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Cruz set the tone Sunday with eight of his 10 receptions in the first half and finished with 142 yards.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's just been a tremendous effort by all of us, man,\" Cruz said. \"We understand that any one of us can get hot at any moment. As long as we're all on the same page and just playing together, man, we've got a great group of guys.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Giants appeared on the verge of collapsing and Coughlin's job status in jeopardy just a month ago, when they fell to 7-7 with an embarrassing loss to the Washington Redskins on Dec. 18.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>They were facing elimination the following week against the Jets and Rex Ryan, but the Giants won 29-14. They followed with a 31-14 win over Dallas in the regular-season finale to win the NFC East and get to the playoffs for the first time since 2008.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>New York dominated Atlanta at home in the opening round, and then came another stunner: a 37-20 victory at Green Bay.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Vernon Davis caught touchdown passes of 73 and 28 yards for the NFC West champions (14-4), who went from 6-10 a year ago to a contender and ended an eight-year playoff drought.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It will be a tough one. It will take a while to get over,\" coach Jim Harbaugh said. \"There were a lot of ways in which we played well enough to win. We just didn't come away with it.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Smith completed just 12 of 26 passes for 196 yards, connecting on only one short throw to a wide receiver. With no threats on the outside, San Francisco managed one third-down conversion, coming on the final play of regulation. "content": "\u003cp>By a simple twist of fate and lack of major career options I happened to be driving a cab in Oakland in the fall of 1981, when the San Francisco 49ers put together their first Super Bowl season. I worked Sunday afternoons, so I listened to most of the games on the radio in my taxi, a black-and-white Ford Granada in which I picked up fares from the bars, the grocery stores, and occasionally the street corners of the Fruitvale district. The season was captivating and of course ended with a series of huge wins highlighted by the Niners-Dallas Cowboys NFC Championship remembered for \"\u003ca href=\"http://youtu.be/tunyz0WWLSI\" target=\"_blank\">The Catch\u003c/a>\" (Joe Montana to Dwight Clark with time running out) and the Niners methodical (as I remember it) \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XVI\" target=\"_blank\">victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl\u003c/a>. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The 49ers had another playoff win on their way to the championship, beating the wild-card New York Giants at Candlestick Park, 38-24, the week before the historic and much remembered \"The Catch\" game. I don't remember a thing about that game, but I only say that by way of remarking on a couple of plays in later Giants-49ers playoff contests that I've never been able to get out of my memory. Both involve very bad moments for 49ers' quarterback Joe Montana. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Bad Moment No. 1\u003c/strong> came January 4, 1987, when the teams met on the Giants' home field in the swamps of New Jersey. The first half featured one of the weirdest plays in the storied career of 49er wide receiver Jerry Rice—on his way toward the end zone with a Joe Montana pass, he fumbled the ball without being touched. The Giants recovered, then marched for a touchdown of their own—an effective 14-point turnaround. But worse was to come. Near the end of the half, Giants' nose tackle Jim Burt smashed Montana as he was releasing the ball. The blow KO'd Montana and led to an interception by linebacker Lawrence Taylor, who ran the ball in for a touchdown. Final score: 49-3. Here's the scene:\u003c/p>\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align: center\">\u003ciframe src=\"http://www.youtube.com/embed/OAY_fUOF2HA\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"480\" height=\"274\">\u003c/iframe>\u003c/div>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Bad Moment No. 2\u003c/strong> also stars Montana in the role of Giants' road kill. On January 20, 1991, the Niners met the New Yorkers on the Bay's boggy shore. With 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter and the 49ers nursing a 13-9 lead, Montana brought the team to the line on third and long. He went back to pass. He looked and looked for a receiver, dodged a tackler, then began rolling to his right. Giants' defensive end Leonard Marshall, who had already been knocked down on the play, was in pursuit. He caught up with Montana just as the quarterback set and began to throw. Montana suffered a broken hand, a bruised sternum, and broken ribs, and later said it was so hard to take a breath after the hit that he thought he would die. The Giants went on to win that game, too, 15-13. The 49ers lead the series with a record of 4-3. I'm not kidding. 49ers fans are everywhere. Sunday's game will replace weather as this weekend's default chit-chat topic. It will get more media coverage than an undecided voter in Iowa. To truly avoid the inevitable buzz that games like this generate, you really should leave town and find somewhere with no electricity and few people.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>If you can't find a monastery to take you in, the movies are your next best bet. The game starts at 3:30 p.m. PST on Sunday, meaning folks will be getting loud and drunk probably by around 1 o'clock. Not so with football, as my friends have tried to explain to me when I ask, “why are you all getting up? The clock says there’s two minutes left.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Last Saturday’s 49ers-Saints game was an exception to the ambiguous game-end experience, as my live-blogging colleague \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2012/01/14/live-blog-san-francisco-49ers-vs-new-orleans-saints/\">Dan Brekke described\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In the last five minutes of the game, the score changed 7 times: Niners 23, Saints 17; tied at 23; Saints 24, Niners 23; Niners 29, Saints 24; Saints 30, Niners 29; Saints 32, Niners 29; Niners 35, Saints 32; and the final score, Niners 36, Saints 32, with nine seconds left on the clock.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Earlier today, \u003ca href=\"http://www.kqed.org/a/kqednews/RN201201161204\">we got some insights\u003c/a> from broadcaster and analyst \u003ca href=\"http://www.sportsbyline1.com/programming/73.html\">Rick Tittle\u003c/a>, who’s heard on 95.7 The Game and Sports Byline. Rick had \u003ca href=\"http://www.kqed.org/a/kqednews/RN201201131730/a\">previewed the game\u003c/a> with KQED’s Kelly Wilkinson on Friday, when he boldly predicted a final score of San Francisco 21, New Orleans 20.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Rick Tittle:\u003c/strong> People say that the last three minutes of a basketball game is when it gets interesting, but here it is a divisional playoff game in the NFL and you had the same kind of story.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It was the first time in NFL playoff history that you had lead changes with touchdowns like that, three times in a timespan like that. It looked like the 49ers had won it when Alex Smith ran that bootleg in off the left side. And then they came right back down and New Orleans, with the long touchdown pass to tight end Jimmy Graham, it looked like the 49ers had thrown it all away.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Then Alex Smith, coming back with his signature moment “The Grab,” as tight end Vernon Davis wants it to be known instead of “The Catch” — yeah, it was theater, no doubt about it.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Nina Thorsen\u003c/strong>: You were expecting them to win, I think.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Tittle:\u003c/strong> Yeah, when I was in on Friday I predicted a one-point victory. I just thought the 49ers at home, such a tough defense giving up just 10 points a game. And New Orleans is not as prolific offensively when they’re outside the Superdome. I didn’t think that Drew Brees was going to throw for nearly 500 yards against that defense. The Niners did definitely stop the run.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But it was all about turnovers, the Saints got down 17-to-nothing very early, and maybe as maligned as that 49ers defense was in that fourth quarter, they gave the offense that huge lead in the first quarter which allowed them to win in the end. So the numbers might look pretty for Brees, but overall, all that matters is the score.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Thorsen:\u003c/strong> What can we expect from this Sunday’s game against the New York Giants?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Tittle:\u003c/strong> It’s amazing, if you think about it. The 49ers are going to host the \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFC_Championship_Game\">NFC championship\u003c/a>, and then you have the Giants – you know the Giants only made the playoffs on the last day of the season, as they played the Cowboys, winner-take-all in the NFC East. It’s a game the 49ers can’t discount. They’ve played the Giants at Candlestick this year, and it was a very, very close game.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But you have to think that the 49ers were favored, despite the Giants shocking the Packers at Lambeau yesterday. It’s probably gonna be an ugly affair, I would assume, probably going to be a lot like the Saints game, very close, very dramatic.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The game is at 3:30 PM on Sunday. Tickets go on sale to season ticket holders at 10 AM Wednesday, and the leftovers — if any — will be offered to the general public at 1 PM.\u003c/p>\n\n",

Not so with football, as my friends have tried to explain to me when I ask, “why are you all getting up? The clock says there’s two minutes left.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Last Saturday’s 49ers-Saints game was an exception to the ambiguous game-end experience, as my live-blogging colleague \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2012/01/14/live-blog-san-francisco-49ers-vs-new-orleans-saints/\">Dan Brekke described\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In the last five minutes of the game, the score changed 7 times: Niners 23, Saints 17; tied at 23; Saints 24, Niners 23; Niners 29, Saints 24; Saints 30, Niners 29; Saints 32, Niners 29; Niners 35, Saints 32; and the final score, Niners 36, Saints 32, with nine seconds left on the clock.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Earlier today, \u003ca href=\"http://www.kqed.org/a/kqednews/RN201201161204\">we got some insights\u003c/a> from broadcaster and analyst \u003ca href=\"http://www.sportsbyline1.com/programming/73.html\">Rick Tittle\u003c/a>, who’s heard on 95.7 The Game and Sports Byline. Rick had \u003ca href=\"http://www.kqed.org/a/kqednews/RN201201131730/a\">previewed the game\u003c/a> with KQED’s Kelly Wilkinson on Friday, when he boldly predicted a final score of San Francisco 21, New Orleans 20.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

It looked like the 49ers had won it when Alex Smith ran that bootleg in off the left side. And then they came right back down and New Orleans, with the long touchdown pass to tight end Jimmy Graham, it looked like the 49ers had thrown it all away.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Then Alex Smith, coming back with his signature moment “The Grab,” as tight end Vernon Davis wants it to be known instead of “The Catch” — yeah, it was theater, no doubt about it.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Nina Thorsen\u003c/strong>: You were expecting them to win, I think.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Tittle:\u003c/strong> Yeah, when I was in on Friday I predicted a one-point victory. I just thought the 49ers at home, such a tough defense giving up just 10 points a game. And New Orleans is not as prolific offensively when they’re outside the Superdome. I didn’t think that Drew Brees was going to throw for nearly 500 yards against that defense. The Niners did definitely stop the run.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But it was all about turnovers, the Saints got down 17-to-nothing very early, and maybe as maligned as that 49ers defense was in that fourth quarter, they gave the offense that huge lead in the first quarter which allowed them to win in the end. So the numbers might look pretty for Brees, but overall, all that matters is the score.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Thorsen:\u003c/strong> What can we expect from this Sunday’s game against the New York Giants?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Tittle:\u003c/strong> It’s amazing, if you think about it. The 49ers are going to host the \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFC_Championship_Game\">NFC championship\u003c/a>, and then you have the Giants – you know the Giants only made the playoffs on the last day of the season, as they played the Cowboys, winner-take-all in the NFC East. It’s a game the 49ers can’t discount. They’ve played the Giants at Candlestick this year, and it was a very, very close game.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But you have to think that the 49ers were favored, despite the Giants shocking the Packers at Lambeau yesterday. It’s probably gonna be an ugly affair, I would assume, probably going to be a lot like the Saints game, very close, very dramatic.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The game is at 3:30 PM on Sunday. Tickets go on sale to season ticket holders at 10 AM Wednesday, and the leftovers — if any — will be offered to the general public at 1 PM.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003c/div>\u003c/p>",
