"bio": "Amanda joined KQED Science’s engagement team as a Senior Audience Engagement Strategist in the spring of 2019. She has helped craft messaging around wildfires, the coronavirus pandemic, climate change and many other stories. Prior to joining KQED Science, Amanda spent seven years as an engagement producer with Forum, KQED’s daily live call-in show. She got her start in radio at KALW's weekly call in show, City Visions, before going on to an internship and stint at NPR's Talk of the Nation.\r\n\r\nPrior to journalism, Amanda taught English at Lowell High School. "bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. Here’s a \u003ca href=\"http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Witnesses-Speak-out-about-Beating-of-Giants-Fan-119445464.html\">\u003cstrong>video\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> of Joe Lagano and Dolores Donnelly describing the incident. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Donnelly says she heard two men yelling profanities and taunting Stow and his companions outside the stadium after the game. Stow tried to defuse the situation, she says, but the two followed and “sucker-punched” him before kicking Stow in the head while he was on the ground. "content": "\u003cp>My thought is that it would be feckless to inveigh against the Dodgers Stadium attack of 42-year-old \u003ca href=\"http://news.google.com/news/search?aq=f&pz=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=en&q=bryan+stow\">Bryan Stow\u003c/a> by a pair of Dodgers fans last week in an incident that appeared to be motivated only by Stow's rooting for the Giants. That such an act of barbarism occurred over something as trivial as a baseball game is almost more imponderable than if it had occurred due to pure and random malice, and would seem to require no further condemnation.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But the incident did take me back to my own brush with fan violence, circa 1985, at Yankee Stadium. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A Mets fan by birth, I'd been running my mouth against the home team all game, until about the 7th inning when the guy in back of me had finally had enough and peppered me with a tirade so wide-ranging in its targeted demographics as to be almost egalitarian in approach. Suffice it to say that race, religion, educational background, sexual orientation, and choice of profession all made an appearance in a barnburner of a speech notable not just for its viciousness, but for the neat oratorical trick of wrapping all these things into one all-encompassing quality, which I have since come to define simply as \"un-Yankeeness.\" Congenital, no doubt.\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In the midst of this violent screed, I managed to peep out something to the effect that \"this is America,\" and that our location within this geopolitical boundary conferred upon me, according to the country's Constitution, the right of free speech, which I believed included the right to publicly proclaim that the New York Yankees suck. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>To which he replied, \"This isn't America, this is \u003cem>Yankee\u003c/em>land.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I'm not making this up.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And so it appears that Bryan Stow, a paramedic by profession, who is now in a coma and is suffering from \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/04/06/BALI1IQNGH.DTL\">brain damage\u003c/a>, who sent a frightened \u003ca href=\"http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/04/giants-fan-sent-text-message-saying-he-was-scared-before-the-beating.html\">text message\u003c/a> about the situation he found himself in minutes before attacked, was caught in royal blue Dodgerland with an orange and black passport. Wearing the wrong colors, wishing the wrong outcome, and most of all, relying on a wrong assumption:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That you \u003cem>can\u003c/em> root for the other guys, that you can even imply in an ironic-yet-cathartic way that the home team sucks without fearing for your life, because, after all, it's only a game.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This sort of tribalism related to sports teams -- what's it all about? Court officials say the juror could have kidney stones or gallstones. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But even though the trial is on hold, there is new evidence. A key prosecution witness says he found a secret tape recording that may prove whether Barry Bonds’ physician talked about the former Giants star’s use of steroids. A prosecutor told the judge today that Steve Hoskins, Bonds’ former business manager, discovered a tape of a 2003 conversation with Dr. Arthur Ting, a renowned Bay Area sports surgeon. Prosecutors say the tape may contradict some of Ting’s testimony last week and that they may need to call Hoskins or Ting or both back to the witness stand.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>U.S. District Judge Susan Illston recessed the trial until Tuesday. There’s a possibility that the sick juror will be replaced by one of two alternates, but we won’t know more until tomorrow.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n",

Photo: Jeff Gross/Getty \u003c/figcaption>\u003c/figure>\n\u003cp>From AP:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Texas A&M's defense was good enough to take down two No. 1 seeds.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>They'll find out Tuesday if it's good enough to win a national title.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Aggies rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final six minutes Saturday, and Sydney Colson drove the length of the floor and found Tyra White for a layup with 3.3 seconds left to give Texas A&M a 63-62 victory - and its first trip to the title game in a thrilling finish that included five lead changes in the final minute.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>After Sydney Carter stole Stanford's final pass, the Aggies leapt for joy.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It shows our competitiveness, our toughness, we love each other like sisters,\" White said. \"We weren't just happy to be here, we wanted to win.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Beat either Notre Dame or two-time defending champ Connecticut on Tuesday night and Texas A&M (32-5) would leave Indianapolis with an improbable national championship.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>White scored 18 points, and All-American Danielle Adams had 16 points to help the Aggies end Stanford's winning streak at 27 in a row.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Cardinal (33-3) were lead by Nnemkadi Ogwumike's 31 points and Jeanette Pohlen had 11, but went home empty-handed from the Final Four for a fourth consecutive year.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>None of those games were as exciting as this one, though.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A&M trailed 54-44 with 6:01 left to go. Adams started an 8-0 run with two free throws and Colson - who woozily went to the bench after a hard screen earlier in the half - finally gave Texas A&M a 59-58 lead by making two free throws with 53 seconds left.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Eighteen seconds later, Adams was called for a foul on Ogwumike. The upset Adams got up and started running toward the Aggies bench, with one of the referees telling her to calm down. Ogwumike made both shots to give Stanford a 60-59 lead.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A&M came back with White's layup with 19 seconds to go, only to have Ogwumike answer with a tough layup with 9 seconds left that gave Stanford a 62-61 lead.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Aggies, without a timeout, immediately got the ball to Colson, who raced up the floor and dished to the cutting White for the winner.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's time to make history,\" Colson said. \"Forget that you're tired and just push through it and I think it's exactly what we did.\" \u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n",

Photo: Jeff Gross/Getty \u003c/figcaption>\u003c/figure>\n\u003cp>From AP:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Texas A&M's defense was good enough to take down two No. 1 seeds.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>They'll find out Tuesday if it's good enough to win a national title.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Aggies rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final six minutes Saturday, and Sydney Colson drove the length of the floor and found Tyra White for a layup with 3.3 seconds left to give Texas A&M a 63-62 victory - and its first trip to the title game in a thrilling finish that included five lead changes in the final minute.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>After Sydney Carter stole Stanford's final pass, the Aggies leapt for joy.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It shows our competitiveness, our toughness, we love each other like sisters,\" White said. \"We weren't just happy to be here, we wanted to win.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Beat either Notre Dame or two-time defending champ Connecticut on Tuesday night and Texas A&M (32-5) would leave Indianapolis with an improbable national championship.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>White scored 18 points, and All-American Danielle Adams had 16 points to help the Aggies end Stanford's winning streak at 27 in a row.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Cardinal (33-3) were lead by Nnemkadi Ogwumike's 31 points and Jeanette Pohlen had 11, but went home empty-handed from the Final Four for a fourth consecutive year.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>None of those games were as exciting as this one, though.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A&M trailed 54-44 with 6:01 left to go. Adams started an 8-0 run with two free throws and Colson - who woozily went to the bench after a hard screen earlier in the half - finally gave Texas A&M a 59-58 lead by making two free throws with 53 seconds left.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Eighteen seconds later, Adams was called for a foul on Ogwumike. The upset Adams got up and started running toward the Aggies bench, with one of the referees telling her to calm down. Ogwumike made both shots to give Stanford a 60-59 lead.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A&M came back with White's layup with 19 seconds to go, only to have Ogwumike answer with a tough layup with 9 seconds left that gave Stanford a 62-61 lead.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Aggies, without a timeout, immediately got the ball to Colson, who raced up the floor and dished to the cutting White for the winner.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's time to make history,\" Colson said. \"Forget that you're tired and just push through it and I think it's exactly what we did.\" \u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

Remember them? The team that seemed to slide into oblivion last year (if you count being the subject of a \u003ca href=\"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1210166/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movie staring Brad Pitt\u003c/a> “oblivion”). \u003c/span>\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: normal\">Many folks are pointing to the strength of the \u003ca href=\"http://bleacherreport.com/articles/649720-2011-mlb-predictions-players-to-watch-and-postseason-locks/entry/57571-2011-mlb-predictions-count-on-the-oakland-athletics-to-win-the-al-west\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A’s starting rotation\u003c/a> and the addition of designated hitter Hideki Matsui as key components to getting the A’s back on the winning track. Some folks even go beyond calling the A’s a team to watch, \u003ca href=\"http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/texas-rangers/post/_/id/4862053/baseball-tonight-watch-out-for-the-as\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and peg them as likely playoff participants\u003c/a>. \u003c/span>\u003c/strong> ESPN’s Baseball Tonight got cheeky and declared that the A’s will be the Giants of 2011. They even employ the term “cast offs.” Does that mean green will be the new orange?
