"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

We know residents in this neighborhood have sufffered a terrible trauma and the pipe is a horrible reminder. On behalf of PG&E, I want to reiterate to you and the residents of your city that you have our commitment that PG&E will not rebuild the damaged section of Line 132 in its current location.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\nNo ifs, ands, or buts about it, apparently. But just in case, KQED's Joshua Johnson called PG&E, and a spokeman said that the company had indeed agreed last week to move the pipeline, in meetings with Yee and Ruane. Which is what they had said. Sort of. And which PG&E had said. But not really. \n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\nAnyway, San Bruno residents affected by the blast are probably relieved. We know residents in this neighborhood have sufffered a terrible trauma and the pipe is a horrible reminder. On behalf of PG&E, I want to reiterate to you and the residents of your city that you have our commitment that PG&E will not rebuild the damaged section of Line 132 in its current location.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\nNo ifs, ands, or buts about it, apparently. But just in case, KQED's Joshua Johnson called PG&E, and a spokeman said that the company had indeed agreed last week to move the pipeline, in meetings with Yee and Ruane. Which is what they had said. Sort of. And which PG&E had said. But not really. \n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\nAnyway, San Bruno residents affected by the blast are probably relieved. Here's what Richardson communicated, as reported by Joshua:\u003c/p>\n\u003cul>\n\u003cli>The flaring this morning was under the reportable dangerous thresholds – part of the procedures of getting the plant back to normal. \u003c/li>\n\u003cli>The heavy black smoke and gases released were definitely from the incident that happened last week. \u003c/li>\n\u003cli>Contra Costa County has a local hazmat team, BAAQMD has ground-level facilities stationed around all the refineries as well as the normal ambient air monitoring system. Richardson is not sure how CC pulls the trigger on an incident warning, though. Hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide are usually released in a refinery incident; BAAQMD didn't pick up unacceptable levels of either; ambient monitors around the facility weren't picking up anything unacceptable. \u003c/li>\n\u003c/ul>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>The agency has five ground level monitoring stations around the plant. Yee and Ruane, as well as several of the families impacted by the explosion, had requested that PG&E find a more suitable location.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“These families deserve an opportunity to rebuild without the possibility of this ever happening again,” said Yee. “The only way these families can recover is to move the pipeline out of their neighborhood. I look forward to working with Mayor Ruane – who has done an extraordinary job in leading his city during this difficult time – to find a more appropriate location.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We simply can not rebuild the neighborhood as long as that pipeline exists in its current location,” said Ruane. “Our families will not live there under those conditions and our city will never be able to heal.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Johns made the commitment to relocate the pipeline yesterday while meeting with Ruane. Today, Yee and Ruane will meet with PG&E officials to begin the process of finding alternative locations for the pipeline.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“There are several competing interests in finding the appropriate location, but surely there must be a better place than through the middle of a residential neighborhood,” said Yee. “I am confident we can come together as a community and get this done right.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Earlier this week, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Los Angeles) signed into law a bill first introduced by Yee to provide disaster relief for the affected families of the San Bruno fires and to assist the County of San Mateo, City of San Bruno, and local schools. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Specifically, the bill allows a continuation of the $7,000 property tax exemption for homeowners who would have qualified for the exemption if their home had not been damaged or destroyed. In addition, the bill allows taxpayers (personal and business) to deduct income loss as result of the incident.
