I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. "content": "\u003cp>Today's Examiner ran a \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfexaminer.com/local/Schools-high-dropout-rate-studied-109809744.html\">\u003cstrong>story\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> on \"\u003ca href=\"http://il.youtube.com/watch?v=aTnrWmzdf5o&feature=related\">\u003cstrong>Why So Low?\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>,\" a five-minute documentary about the exceptionally low graduation rate of African Americans and especially African American males at Thurgood Marshall High School in San Francisco. Out of 150 African American seniors in 2009, just three boys and 13 girls graduated. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The documentary, made by Thurgood Marshall students Donel Finks, Angelica Escobar, Edgar Ulu, Fernando Torrez and Frank Nelson, finished first in the high school division of the sixth \u003ca href=\"http://myhero.com/go/films/festival_winners.asp?year=10\">My Hero Short Film Festival\u003c/a>, held at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles on Saturday. In the film, an assistant principal calls the current rate of graduation, which has been dropping for years, \"horrific,\" and one male African-American freshman says, \"They judge you by your second-grade test scores...It seems to me they've been making my prison cell since the second grade.
