"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

KDFC will become a non-profit and move from 102.1 FM down to the non-commercial neighborhood, at 89.9 and 90.3. According to the \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/01/18/DDV71H9VL2.DTL\">\u003cstrong>Chronicle\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>, San Jose classic rock station KUFX will then replace KDFC at 102.1. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But wait a minute, wasn't there already a station broadcasting on 90.3?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Yup. One that's been part of the Bay Area radio \u003ca href=\"http://www.kusf-archives.com/\">landscape\u003c/a> since 1977. From a University of San Francisco \u003ca href=\"http://www.usfca.edu/Newsroom/Community_News/KUSF_Moves_to_Online_Only_Format/\">press release\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nThe University of San Francisco announced today that KUSF, the university’s radio station, is moving to an online only format, effective immediately. The university has reached an agreement to assign the FCC license for radio frequency 90.3 FM to \u003ca href=\"http://www.radio-info.com/news/action-in-san-francisco-where-kusf-sells-its-903-facility-to-usc\">Classical Public Radio Network\u003c/a>, which is launching a non-commercial classical music station in the Bay Area. CPRN is owned by University of Southern California. The call letters KUSF were not sold, and the KUSF logo and all music inventory will remain USF property. All KUSF staff will be offered similar positions at KUSF.org.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The move to online-only distribution gives KUSF a powerful opportunity to grow its worldwide audience. Previously, the station was limited to 100 online listeners at a time, but capacity will be increased to accommodate thousands of listeners. The station will go dark briefly for necessary engineering work. It is possible the electrical work could take several days.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>That's the university's take. But earlier today KUSF DJ Carolyn Keddy \u003ca href=\"http://twitter.com/#!/CarolyntheDJ/status/27454927315935232\">tweeted\u003c/a> this: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nJust showed up @kusf to my show and the doors are locked. USF has sold the station. Management was in on it. He, along with other station workers, didn't mince words about their feelings towards USF. \"The university had been keeping this from us, hadn't involved us at all,\" said Swirnoff, speaking from the work room of KUSF, where he and other volunteers have been frantically pulling records of past ticket winners and music press, trying to get the word out that KUSF had been unfairly brought down...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Swirnoff and others, meanwhile, are trying to rally the public behind the 34-year old freeform station. The FCC filing allows for 30 days of public comment before the sale goes through.
