I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. "content": "\u003cp>Yesterday, NTSB Chairwoman Deborah Hersman visited the site of the San Bruno gas pipeline blast. Congresswoman Jackie Speier, introducing Hersman, called the area an “open wound.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Hersman revealed yesterday that PG&E had waited until only recently to inform the NTSB that the pipeline that ruptured at a defective weld last year, causing a fire that killed nine people and destroyed 38 homes, had \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/06/09/MNB81JRF3M.DTL&type=newsbayarea\">previously leaked\u003c/a> at a similar weld in 1988.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>KGO has put up \u003ca href=\"http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/video?id=8178585\">\u003cstrong>raw video\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> of the entire event. Hersman said the agency was still collecting information about how serious the leak was. She said this type of information had been requested at the beginning of the investigation, and that “we certainly would have expected to see that earlier in the process.” \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Why the delay? \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We do not know why PG&E did not provide this information to our investigators. I think that’s a question you’d have to ask PG&E.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/06/09/MNB81JRF3M.DTL\">Chronicle\u003c/a> spoke to PG&E yesterday and reported this: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Brian Swanson, a PG&E spokesman, said the company found a document related to the 1988 leak last month in a field office. He said workers were conducting a leak survey just south of San Mateo that year and found a “small leak” of methane gas.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He said the leak was coming from a “pinhole” opening in a weld on a longitudinal pipe seam.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A 12-foot section of pipe was replaced and the repair was tested using high-pressure water, which can detect problem welds, Swanson said. He said workers were conducting a leak survey just south of San Mateo that year and found a “small leak” of methane gas.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He said the leak was coming from a “pinhole” opening in a weld on a longitudinal pipe seam.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A 12-foot section of pipe was replaced and the repair was tested using high-pressure water, which can detect problem welds, Swanson said. However, the rest of the 51-mile line was not tested.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Swanson said the company gave the document to the federal safety board on May 20, “for them to assess whether it has any relevance in their investigation.”\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Hersman said at the press conference that the delay in reporting the leak spoke to the issue of PG&E not being in a position to make good risk assessments due to the company’s lack of adequate information.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Congresswoman Jackie Speier answers questions at around 18:30 of the video.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Hersman also announced that the NTSB had issued three \u003ca href=\"http://www.ntsb.gov/Pressrel/2011/110608.html\">safety recommendations\u003c/a> coming out of the investigation.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003c/div>\u003c/p>",

(AP) Nearly nine months after federal investigators began probing a deadly pipeline explosion near San Francisco, a California utility quietly revealed its ruptured line had sprung a leak in a nearby spot years before, a top safety official said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>National Transportation Safety Board Chair Deborah Hersman called Pacific Gas & Electric Co.’s recent disclosure of the 1988 gas leak “troubling” as she prepared to announce two new safety recommendations at a news conference Wednesday in San Bruno.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“If it took them months to realize they had a leak on the same line just nine miles south of the rupture site and only now we’re hearing about it, that’s very troubling,” Hersman said. “They clearly weren’t contemplating this information when they were assessing the risk on this line.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Learning about past problems so long after the investigation began hampers federal investigators’ ability to quickly determine what caused the fatal blast, she said.
