The race for governor could turn out to be the most expensive race for elected office in California history. A campaign finance report filed yesterday shows former eBay CEO Republican Meg Whitman spent almost $81 million on her campaign this year, and a total just over $100 million since her quest for the governor's seat began. Her Democratic opponent, Jerry Brown, has spent about $377,000 this year, but he has $24 million on hand.
