State Budget: Jerry Brown's Proposal
It's safe to say that the classic definition of compromise is when two opposing sides meet squarely in the middle. That's one way to look at the state budget proposed Monday by Governor Jerry Brown: a plan that almost evenly divides a $25.4 billion deficit into spending cuts and additional taxes.

State Budget: Social Services Impact
Some of the deepest cuts Brown proposes hit the state's social safety net. Dozens of poor, elderly and disabled people, along with their caregivers and advocates, rallied outside the governor's office in Los Angeles yesterday.

State Budget: Education Impact
Before he released his budget proposal, Governor Brown talked about spreading the pain evenly to help close California's looming budget gap. The plan proposes cuts to all levels of higher education, but K-12 schools would be spared.
