Day of Action to Protest Education Cuts
Governor Jerry Brown's latest budget proposal cuts UC & CSU spending by a combined $1 billion, and the governor wants $11 billion in tax extensions approved by voters to, in part, avoid more cuts to K-12 schools. Without those extensions, the non-partisan Legislative Analyst's Office says K-12 school funding may need to be cut by $4.8 billion in 2011-12. Students and teachers throughout the state are holding rallies and teach-ins today, to call attention to the budget issues.
San Bruno Hearings Continue in D.C.
Public hearings continue in Washington, D.C. today over the deadly natural gas pipeline explosion in San Bruno last fall. Yesterday's meeting focused on automatic shutoff valves.
