As Atlantis took off from the Kennedy Space Center, a crowd of Californians 2,911 miles away cheered with gusto. Mountain View is home to the NASA Ames Research Center, a vital part of the space shuttle program -- and it seemed a fitting place to celebrate and mourn the end of an era.
