The shutdown of a critical chunk of the 405 freeway over the weekend could have been a traffic nightmare, but thanks to a publicity campaign that persuaded Los Angeles drivers to stay close to home, no "Carmageddon" came to pass -- and contractors finished the project 16 hours early.
Rural Homebuilding Project Faces Budget Axe
The Obama administration's budget proposal for next year would eliminate a program that helps farmworkers and other rural residents build their own homes. The program began in California back in the 1960s -- and the homeowners it has served have a significantly lower rates of foreclosure.
