Governor Announces Jobs Package
With a growing chorus of calls for a focus on jobs, Governor Jerry Brown is promoting a new package based on tax breaks. But Brown faces criticism by some who say the package won't work or can't be vetted before the end of the legislative session.

Documents Detail Controversial Pesticide Approval
The state Department of Pesticide Regulation has released internal documents showing its own scientists did not support the decision to approve methyl iodide for use on strawberry fields. The documents were released by court order, in a lawsuit filed by environmental groups against the state. The suit argued that methyl iodide may cause cancer and miscarriages in farmworkers.

State Requests Waiver on No Child Left Behind
State schools chief Tom Torlakson has sent a letter to the federal government, asking for a waiver from the No Child Left Behind Act. About 80 percent of California schools face some kind of penalty under the act.
