Californians Face Dismal Retirement
Nearly half of California workers will retire in poverty or close to it, according to a new UC Berkeley study. Californians are also less likely than most Americans to have employer-sponsored retirement plans.

New Calls for Use of 'Laura's Law'
The killing of suspected schizophrenic Aaron Bassler by police -- after he allegedly murdered two people -- and another incident in Orange County in which police killed a schizophrenic homeless man have prompted more attention to "Laura's Law." The measure permits courts to order outpatient treatment for mentally ill people under certain circumstances. So far, only one California county has authorized use of the law, although it was enacted nearly 10 years ago.
