Pesticide Use on the Upswing
State regulators say California farmers and landscapers are using more pesticides, in part because of damp weather and mildew last growing season.

Push to Rework Three Strikes Sentencing
In the coming year, California voters could be asked to scale back the state's Three Strikes law. Opponents of the harsh sentencing mandate have proposed a ballot measure that would put stricter standards on how the law is applied, reserving the 25-to-life sentences for cases where the third strike involved violence. Offenders with a record of murder or sexual assault would still be eligible for longer sentences.
