State Universities Scramble for Every Last Dollar
University of California officials are considering a plan to raise tuition by 6 percent this fall. Administrators say the 10-campus system would also need to consider a big mid-year tuition increase or make drastic cuts if the governor's tax initiative fails. At the same time, Cal State University trustees are trying to imagine how far they'd go to compensate for $200 million in cuts to the system.

Foie Gras Fans and Foes Count Down to Ban
A statewide ban on foie gras, the fatty liver delicacy produced by force-feeding ducks and geese, kicks in on July 1. Nearly eight years have passed since the bill that mandated it was signed. But advocates on both sides have turned up their burners ahead of the deadline.
