Gov. Faces Deadline on Prison Overcrowding
In Sacramento, Governor Jerry Brown has been consumed by a political hot spot: a midnight Thursday deadline to tell a federal court how he's going to reduce prison crowding. The governor says the inmate population has already been significantly reduced. But the court says that isn't good enough. So, at the last minute, a defiant Brown gave the court his plan. Host Scott Shafer finds out what comes next from Michael Montgomery, reporter for KQED and the Center for Investigative Reporting.

For Biotech Entrepreneurs, Academia as Launch Pad
There's an old joke that Stanford is a start-up incubator with a football team. That's easy to understand with companies like Google and Yahoo getting their start on campus. But it's not just MBAs blurring the lines between industry and academia. Schools focusing on science, like UC San Francisco, are scrambling to help students turn their lab work into the next big biotech company.

South L.A. Foster Kid Faces Uncertain Future
Coriah Welch has about 20 colleges to choose from after she graduates. But the decision is a difficult one. For the last few years, Welch has been raising three of her four half-brothers in their foster home in South Los Angeles, and she's afraid to leave them. For our new series "Graduation Day," budding reporters from USC Annenberg's School of Communication and Journalism were assigned to profile high school students counting down the days until graduation.

Coachella Farmworkers Struggle for Quality Housing
There was a ribbon cutting in the Coachella Valley east of Palm Springs this week, for a new housing complex to replace a dilapidated mobile home park. That 80-unit development is welcome news, but much more is needed. The region is rich in agricultural bounty, but the farmworkers there -- many of them immigrants -- often live in sub-standard mobile home parks. We visit a few of them to learn about the challenges of affordable housing in the region, and what the future may hold.
